but what's pulling the water up to the top of the wheel? is it a siphon? is it just pressure from the flow of the aqueduct?

Modern laser cut steel waterwheels with properly designed curved buckets are well over 90% efficiently. One hundred years ago, in the 1920's the Fitz Water Wheel Co. of Hanover, Pennsylvania had one of their steel water wheels tested at the University of Wisconsin and the result was 93% efficiency. A laser cut stainless steel water wheel would last centuries and the only maintenance is lubricating the bearings a the occasional replacement. Unlike turbines, water wheels are safe for fish, unimpeded by sticks, leaves, and other debris which will pass over the wheel without damage. The other great attribute of water wheels is that they will produce power to the amount of water flowing onto the wheel even if the stream slows to a trickle. A turbine can never do that as they have much more narrow flow parameters which can make them worthless when stream levels are low.

Well made and explained video as allways!, I saw you randomly in a pokerstars twitch stream where you went pretty far on a few weeks ago, cool to see you there. The reason I follow you is because I saw you stream poker one time and you and the chat had some really interesting topics, i also see you host others on twitch, and i wish you started streaming again, last time I saw you stream was when you were on a hotel a year ago or so :)

They did this but if they was to do this same thing to produce electrical 🔋 on a higher speed with stronger spin this can be a far more cleaner source of power and in doing so should be able to produce enough energy to support towns and who knows maybe more

Very inspirational. I Thought of a method of a totally self contained water wheel approximately 6Ft. 6" diameter with a width of 12ft. that can turn a standard 22hp. whole house 200 amp generator . Get this, you don't need a running stream, river, or flowing creek to make it work. I'll get back with you all with some drawings and video of this recently inspired concept. Once I put this concept out there its yours to do with what you want.

I guess it wouldn't be as efficient had they made it smaller but faster. This reminds me of the discontinuous shock pump that also increases pressure.

Why do they pump water to the top instead of running the water along the bottom of the wheel
@boomfly9543
@boomfly9543 3 жыл бұрын
The potential energy of the water is greater at higher heights, therefor you can extract more energy. If the water flows underneath the wheel, you can only extract the kinetic energy of the water. If you let the water fall you can extract the kinetic and potiential energy, producing more power and increasing efficiency.

@@boomfly9543 though they need to pump the water up, so not much of an energy gain
@boomfly9543
@boomfly9543 2 жыл бұрын
@@YukamsGaming yea ideally you just build it under water level but if it takes 5 MW to pump it up and you can extract 10 MW more out of the water then you still profit, although takes a economical analysis to see if its worth the capital cost of the pump

Check with Wikipedia. The source reservoir is above the top of the wheel. The water is conveyed in pressure pipes as a reverse syphon. Funny smarty pants didn't mention that. It's an obvious question.

Why bother though? You're pumping the water up anyway so you're wasting energy. Surely, there's a more straightforward approach to achieve whatever the wheel is used for by just using the energy you're spending on the pump instead of the energy you're producing with the wheel.
