The Drum has been discussing what constitutes domestic violence and how that definition includes far more than just physical abuse.
Now think about things like placing limits on a partners spending, dictating what they wear or secretly reading their text messages, all of these actions could amount to what's known as "coercive control".
Laws in Scotland criminalising coercive control came into force in 2018, and domestic violence experts have described them as "gold standard".
Now, a New South Wales inquiry is considering laws and hearing evidence from those who have experienced coercive control directly.
