The one Shute way of conserving water is to force the water companies, under threat of extremely punitive fines, to fix the leaks. They should also be forced by the same extremely punitive fines to stop using our rivers and the sea as sewers.

In UK the democracy dictates infrastructure will only be built if there is a profit to be made. Thus the citizens must have to suffer from a water shortage first, the water rate can then go skyrocket and the higher receipts can be used for bringing water from elsewhere to the water-starved region.

Storage yes - and also land engineering. The profile of rain is changing too in some areas (e.g. more intense rains=less rain absorbed by land and more goes straight to sea) so having forests, ponds and other way of encouraging retention is important.

The obvious solution is to make sure water is spread evenly across the country. This would be easily affordable by cancelling that white elephant HS2. The cost of this folly will end up closer to £150 billion not the original 80 billion it was supposed to cost. I am sure people would rather have a plentiful supply of water and their train journey take an extra 30 minutes. The alternative is quick trains and we all die of dehydration. Water is far more important than money and quicker trains. I just wish the Eton educated mob would realise this

Four simple ways. 1 Force water companies to take on more repair crews to fix all leaks within days and not months. These extra crews can be paid for out of the immoral salaries and bonuses the company directors get and also by reducing the dividend share they give to their share holders. 2 When the water companies are seen to be doing their bit, then educate people to be aware of how to be more economical with water. 3 The average daily use of water per person, is in the region of 150 to 160 litres per day. The more people that are in the country means there is less water per person. 4 Invest in the de-salination of salt water. We are surrounded by it!

A cloudbuster is a device designed by Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957), which Reich claimed could produce rain by manipulating what he called "orgone energy" present in the atmosphere.[1] Reich with one of his cloudbusters The cloudbuster was intended to be used in a way similar to a lightning rod: focusing it on a location in the sky and grounding it in some material that was presumed to absorb orgone-such as a body of water-would draw the orgone energy out of the atmosphere, causing the formation of clouds and rain. Reich conducted dozens of experiments with the cloudbuster, calling the research "Cosmic orgone engineering".[1]

Building new pipelines is like plugging a leaky old rotten bucket with your fingers. Most of the water pipeline network in the UK is well past it's overhaul date, some of those pipes are ancient. Trillions of pinhole leaks and miles of porous old pipes stack up alongside faulty joints, which is why we loose over 3 billion litres of water every day before it gets anywhere near a tap. We need a thorough overhaul project to reduce this massive waste to an absolute minimum, which would drastically reduce the strain on existing reservoirs and water processing. The funds for it needs to come from reinvestment, instead of the current siphoning off of funds into greedy shareholder's wallets never to be seen again.

@baby blue. I would disagree because surely with the length of time desalination technology has been around surely they should have some idea of what the effects are before ruling it out as an option. To me this is a question of evidence and viability. To me it is ridiculous to argue environmental factors when no evidence this is the case exists and also that it has not been investigated whether this is financially viable. The idea also is to secure sources and avoid increasing bills as well. I fully understand if clear reasoning with evidence to support is offered but to cite non evidenced environmental factors is poor when exploring viable options of what will secure water supply for the future.

Massive infrastructural and environmentally sensible investment from the state and private firms. Channel water from surplus areas using miles of pipes or channels like in the USA from the Colorado river to Arizona that has created by proxy a forest corridor, new revivors, proactive planning, watershed regeneration, reforestation with native trees. Give contracts to local firms and help stimulate local jobs in the UK. All governments of all parties have been asleep at the wheel, letting the UK infrastructure crumble and companies plunder it for profit whilst underinvesting.

We need to build more reservoirs as the UK population has exploded over many years. Desalination plants are other options although the huge cost and maintenance would inevitably result in a huge rise in water bills on top of the current huge water rates. Plus there are other arguments in relation to the very large amounts of energy that would be required to operate these plants and the environmental impact. The former is a better solution as after the reservoirs have been built they will become nature reserves and look natural in their rural settings.

Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation. Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame. Methane has a global warming potential 86 times that of CO2 on a 20 year time frame. Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human-related emissions of nitrous oxide - a greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years. Emissions for agriculture projected to increase 80% by 2050. US Methane emissions from livestock and natural gas are nearly equal. Cows produce 150 billion gallons of methane per day.
