"Development started with Mr. Miyamoto saying he wanted to make a side-scrolling action game that made use of up and down movements for attacks and defense. It’s rooted in actions like jump strikes, downward strikes, and high and low shield defense moves. Types of moves that weren’t possible in the first game. Rather than being a continuation of the series, it started as a new sword and shield type of action game. We were experimenting while producing the game so we didn’t really have the first game’s systems in mind while developing it. As for it being unique within the series, we were searching for new ways to play so you could say it’s like a spin-off. At the end of development we decided on a story and that Link would be 16 years old then attached The Legend of Zelda 2 and released it as the second game in the series." Sugiyama

@Crude Wildfire We're literally on the heals of the most recent entries in Nintendo's flagship franchises being some of the most innovative they've ever released after finally delivering on a practical console/mobile game system with good game library support. Why are you speaking as if the only time anyone ever experimented was in the NES era? There's seldom been a time Nintendo haven't been trying to innovate on one project or another throughout all the generations, just not always in all the same places. They've got both many successes and meny failulars to show for it.

With regards to “Would people like this game more if it didn’t have Zelda in the title.” I think it was Barb who said that Nintendo was experimenting with what direction to take the franchise, and that it was good for them to experiment like they did with the sequel. The island palace is one of the most cryptic parts of the game. First, you need to go to some random tile on the maze island and find the child, then you need to go back to darunia for reflect, then you need to jump into a random chimney (that nobody tells you about) to get up-stab, then you need to complete the palace. Plus there's that random "false wall" that you need to learn to just jump through.

It's been a lot of fun watching you validate my opinion of my first Zelda! How'd you figure out you could enter a chimney? That moment isn't shown in this video. I don't really think the game over is all that punishing, personally, since progressing by finding items unlocks so much of the world. It mostly sucks before you get the hammer, but then the hammer makes getting back to palaces 2 and 3 pretty quick. The boots let you skip the cave and maze to return to palace 4, and you can get to palace 5 from the start with only one random encounter to dodge. The raft and flute are each used to open paths that take like a minute to return to. Past the river devil, I admit there's a lot of crap it would be nice if you could skip.

So I watch watching this, and almost every question you have was excruciating to listen to. The reason you had so much trouble was due to a simple reality: Before computers were super powerful, in order to save space on game size, anything you would have in a tutorial today would be in the printed instruction manual. Almost EVERYTHING you had difficulty with is explained in the manual. Remember this in future NES games. Read the manual first, THEN play the game. Try to find a PDF if you can, because the manual had images to help correlate what you encounter in game.
