I usually open by introducing myself. A lot of people start with a compliment, but this can scare away a shy star. If your introduction is met with a smile, then move to a compliment, but not about the star’s physical appearance, rather a star’s accessories. “Hey, that’s a really nice planetary system you got there. Must have taken a long time to develop?”

This is very interesting! On a similar note I hear astronomers talk about finding a star's distance by red or blue shift? I've always wondered how they can tell the shifted color from a non-shifted color.
@TheDanEdwards
@TheDanEdwards 2 жыл бұрын
" how they can tell the shifted color from a non-shifted color" - spectroscopy. And, each kind of chemical compound, even if it is just an element, has a characteristic spectra. So for example, make a spectrogram of a star and see where (in frequency) the characteristic Hydrogen emissions end up.
@klutterkicker
@klutterkicker 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanEdwards Ah okay, so hydrogen will be the dominant peak even in stars with different colors and composition.
@michaelblacktree
@michaelblacktree 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the hydrogen needs to be dominant. There just needs to be enough to provide spectral data. But I think most stars are predominantly hydrogen. And as mentioned above, the hydrogen will have a spectral fingerprint, so to speak. Scientists look for that fingerprint, and check if it's been shifted up or down the spectrum.

So our sun is a star that doesn't exist in a stellar cluster. My question is: would we notice if it did? If our sun existed as a part of a stellar cluster like most other stars seem to be, assuming life like us still sprang up on this blue marble of ours, would there be any tangible or noticeable differences from our human perspectives?
@golwenlothlindel
@golwenlothlindel 2 жыл бұрын
yes. There would be a lot more stars very close by. In the best case scenario, our nights would be significantly brighter than they are. In the worst case scenario, there would be a star close enough to pull the planet out of the ecliptic and that gets weird real fast.
@justinpyle3415
@justinpyle3415 2 жыл бұрын
Most of us wouldnt recognize a siginificant difference. unless such clusters are statisticaly located significantly closer to galactic centers, they might be im not sure, in which case the night sky would be much brighter than we are used to.

@Timelord79
@Timelord79 2 жыл бұрын
It’s highly likely our sun was once part of a cluster after being formed in a stellar nursery not unlike the pillars of creation or the great Orion Nebula. Eventually gravity did it‘s thing and flung it out on a solo journey around the Milky Way. Astronomers are actively looking for other stars matching the composition and age of our sun to determine where the sun might have come from originally, I believe?

The most important thing to remember is that a star will not settle down and date you. You're just going to accept a parasocial relationship. Also, keep in mind that dedicating yourself to spending time with a star can be hazardous since it's so easy to get burned by their attention, so make sure you use protection.
