If you watch his press conference, he said that on the second TD pass, that he knew the blitzer was his man (hot), and he saw him before the snap. He then said, "just like in practice." They practice this, so I doubt it will be an advantage for the defense from a surprise perspective. He and the offense still have to execute. So, he read the defense correctly, was not surprised and executed brilliantly. I feel sorry for the defense.

According to Lamar's post game presser, they practice the zero blitz like this. He is responsible for beating that hot defender, either in the pocket or getting around him to scramble. The 5 verts allow him the room to run if he beats his man to the outside. They really do trust him to win that battle. I think he recognized the pressures, he just does not have the nuances down yet, i.e. check route/blocks, shuffling to the opposite side.

I was literally about to comment on that last play he broke down, but you said what I was going to say. They asked him about that in the presser, and he broke it down. He's so athletic, they give him more flexibility in the pocket because of his athleticism. He does obviously have flaws in reading the play at times, but at 22 years old and many more years of film study ahead of him, he could end up being absolutely incredible. He and Mahomes are some of the few QB's who can literally make something out of absolutely nothing.

That second TD throw was ridiculous. I mean I saw it in real time and noticed a bunch of things, like his feet and his balance, but upon reviewing it again in this video, you can see his hips are actually rotating the wrong way. Instead of rotating left to put power into the throw, because of his positioning they're rotating the other way. That's gotta sap a huge amount of power off of his throw, meaning he had to compensate for it and did so basically perfectly.

Lamar plays basketball on the gridiron. When you guard what he does the best, he’s dominant enough at everything else to burn you anyway. You stack the box, he pulls the ball and beats you to the edge. You put 8dbs, he fakes a run and hands/pitches it to Ingram/Edwards and gets 10. You zero blitz and he hits Hollywood or Andrews for 25+. I’ve seen great defenses play him perfectly and then he sits in the pocket and hit a receiver 20 yards downfield in double coverage or jukes several players out of their cleats. I’m in awe of that man because he’s dictating the defenders reaction not the other way around. He has an answer to everything. His decision making is faster than lightning.

Basically what I learned from this video is that you can’t truly schematically stop him he can only stop himself. You are viewing things from a non-athletic perspective which is what most of the QB concepts in the NFL are predicated on. Cover 0 blitz or (or any blitz really) doesn’t work on a QB like him because he has supreme confidence that he can either juke or out run the free defender(like Seahawks game). You have to have Great Corners and low 4.5 speed LBs to even successfully scheme him up. You also have to get a big lead so it will force the Ravens to be one dimensional. That’s your only true shot. I believe he is going to continue to ascend (barring injury) and has a chance to be Aaron Rodgers with 4.4 speed 😳

The Patriots did a lot of what you are describing defensively against Lamar. These punt rush defensive formations. Overloading one side. And Lamar tore them a new one. Am I wrong on that? I'm pretty sure it was the same look from a much better defense. Granted, if he legitimately is not seeing these rushes and is just getting lucky, then that's not good. But I think you are making some assumptions about what is going on inside his head (albeit his body language and pocket movements support your take, even if the outcomes of these plays do not support your take). Granted, for me to say he knows the rush is coming is the same supposition. I think a lot of teams were abandoning this type of defense against the Ravens in the last third of the season because Lamar was handling the pressure with quick throws and play option runs that nullified that rush. And if the runners broke that initial cluster of defenders (and the blitzers were rendered irrelevant), then huge runs were gashed into those defenses. I think a lot of teams saw the best defense in the league (Patriots) get slashed and smashed using these tactics, so a lot of them tried different approaches to stopping Lamar.

On the first Andrews TD, it's likely that Jackson saw the safety shift over and that's why he threw the seam. He was in shotgun so he'd be looking right at the safety, and the safety jumped to the right immediately - if that was something he was looking for on that play, then it's the right throw to make.
@adam-rickman5 жыл бұрын
ChumblesMumbles my thoughts exactly. That safety is just staring over that direction and immediately steps as soon as the ball is snapped. That’s a pretty obvious throw to make. I think Lamar has some amazing awareness and that’s allowing him to make some o these plays. He feels that the linebacker is off the line, he knows how much time he has and can really get it out of his hand quickly too. I think if he had seen that safety move the other way, he would have thrown down to the left or right.

That 1st TD to Mandrews not Mark Andrews was supposed to be a sail route against zero man coverage. The blitz off the edge was Lamar's read he's responsible for seeing it. That safety up top was reading the RB. The safety moved towards the side of the RB but stalled when realized the RB was blocking. The miscommunication was by the inside LB who initially had Mark but saw the in-cut from the #2 reciever and sat inside. Because Mark saw that, he throttled in the seam instead of running the sail because he was wide @$$ open... 6 pts Baltimore Touchdown. He was going to Mandrews from the get go

I'm really surprised the Ravens don't run more screen plays. I cannot remember many screens this season. I actually expect them to use it this week against Pittsburg because Mark Ingram isn't playing along with other veterans so Justice Hill will be the spell HB to Gus Edwards. Now Justice Hill is the type of HB, small & quick, to use such screens against an aggressive style pass rush defense like Pittsburgh. It would help get RG3 in rhythm too with some easy completions because he ain't Lamar Jackson. They cannot run the offense like they do with Lamar. Ravens need to run some quick passing plays like slants & bubble screens to Hollywood. IDK why they don't run those quick WR screens to Hollywood more often.

JT, ever since I found your channel a couple months ago I have over, and agreed with almost 100%, all your breakdowns, this is the first one I feel your either very wrong or just misunderstanding Lamar’s actions on the certain play! On the first play I feel personally as Lamar seen the blitz and noticed how far off the line the blitzing CB was, so he did like he does so often and went to look off the safety to keep him away from the hot WR, but he quickly noticed that Safety leavin MA open therefore makin him pretty much a hot WR also and delivered a perfect strike! I think a part of his game that is sooo underrated is his decision making and his coverage recognition! This is why he’s so efficient, some games he completed 15 passes with 5 TD passes! Just ridiculous!!
@TheQBSchool5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I think there are a few reasons why he has stat lines like your example. One, he is that good as a passer. Two, his capacity to run. Three, the seemingly perfect of a fit scheme. However, all that being said he still looks confused to me post snap in blitz/pressure (D brings 5 or more) than anything else. I get he made them pay here. I do. I get he’s made them pay most, if not all the year, yet, I still am not convinced it’s repeatable over the long term to just let guys run free, make them miss, then throw a dime. I am just not. Doesn’t mean I can’t be wrong though.

I can pretty much agree with u on all of that, and when u say it’s not repeatable on the long term, I go to another thing I love about Lamar, the urge he has to work hard to improve and to be great I think shows in the ridiculous strides he’s made in the offseason, from not being able to throw a spiral as he’s stated, to leading the NFL in passing TD’s!! I can’t wait to see the strides he makes in the offseason again, and as a lifelong Ravens fan from Baltimore, that never liked bland boring Flacco lol, I couldn’t be more happy with how humble Lamar is and how much credit he gives to everyone besides himself! First off for this to work all ur defensive players need to run in the 4.2- 4.5 range EVERYONE including DLINE. got that? OK the rest is easy. 1. Get the ball first, score a lot. Like a lot! Like 21pts in first Q. 2. Make the Ravens COMPLETELY abandon the run. Like zero chance of running. 3. Somehow force the Ravens to ALWAYS be in empty set. Not sure how but find a way. 4. Now commit your 6 fastest players to rush lamar unbalanced and hope one player gets there. 5. Also play press man with your other fastest players and make sure they can cover Hollywood over the top while also able to run back to cover lamar if he somehow finds a crack to run. Boom done. 🙄

You can't let them get out to a fast start. Once they have the lead they will run it down your throat all night. So, as important t as it is to contain the offense, your own offense has to score early and often. It has to be a shootout to beat him

It means that there's nothing you can do, even if you get the jump on him., he's going to get what he wants from that drive. I would not be surprised if more teams approach him with overloads/punt lines like this, however, what peaks my curiosity is if other teams in the league attempt to box the outside using DE’s in contain/staying at home, have a middle LB sitting as a QB spy, and change up the schematics of what the OLB’s and DB’s do from a coverage/blitz standpoint. Zero blitzes are not succeeding too much with how good the line protection has been all season and exotic looks aren’t working if they result in a basic coverage scheme.

Bought into the criticism that the Ravens can't score quickly as they are run first, which won't work with no timeouts. And they still think he's run first and can't kill you from the pocket. Not sure why at game 15, but hopefully DCs keep thinking that. 🤣
@rars0n5 жыл бұрын
@@ericlee3165 Well, the thing is, the Ravens CAN score quickly, they've done so repeatedly this season, AND have also dominated time of possession. Granted I think they get more credit for that because they tend to run a lot and therefore more often use a lot of clock. I think, however, the stronger narrative has been that the Ravens tend to come out strong. How many times did they score on their opening drive? I can't remember. And also prevented opening drive scores through their defense. Thus, I think the prevailing notion became "the way to beat the Ravens is to score first and get ahead" which I have actually heard quite a few pundits say repeatedly. But to me, that's just kind of silly. Give Jackson enough time, and he's going to find a way into the end zone. Likewise, I expect the defense to make adjustments and even if you're up a touchdown or 2, if the offense is clicking at all, they will keep you off the field while they figure it out. I think the Browns were considering a 6-0 game after 28 minutes to be a great start or something, and forgot they still had to play another 2 minutes. Still, the coaching decision is utterly baffling. Also, anyone who doesn't recognize that Jackson can throw at this point is a damn fool. But yeah, I think he'll continue to befuddle DCs all the way to the Super Bowl.

A few comments: Lamar's tremendous agility is on display all the time. Lamar's footwork is impeccable. He has to be an awesome dancer. Ever seen a leopard struggling with his balance or his foot placement? With that agility comes the ability to make solid, effective passes in a multitude of ways. another point: clock management. Lamar in these clips is orchestrating the entire move down the field. I don't see any wasted motion or confusion. That's huge for a quarterback in what is basically his first year. With his supreme body control, he keeps his head and focus perfectly. I also don't understand how stacking the line is going to help against an athlete who can accelerate to full speed from a standing start in the time it takes you to close the gap between yourself and him--when you entered his air space at full speed! All while keeping his eyes on his receivers. It is hard to bear in mind that these defenders are some of the fastest and quickest athletes on this planet.

True but to be fair, everyone knows the answer to brady is simply hit him. He gets flustered and starts feeling pressure sooner than it gets there. The giants and ravens got superbowls by doing that to him.

TheDCGuitar13 that’s after a couple rings and it was not a world effort to stop him sports networks didn’t do that bro it’s hate flat out

410ahk I honestly get a kick out of it these days. We know Lamar is gonna go out and do the hell out of everything the media spent all week saying he can’t and then we get to watch them get flustered, red faced and angry when telling you the next excuse. Don’t let them take away the joy and marvel of that once in a lifetime king bro. If anything know that the bs media is giving him free fuel to keep that boulder on his shoulder nice and heavy.

410ahk interior pressure so that he can’t step up into the pocket or manipulate the pocket. And the secondary has to play man to man, he touches zone coverage and outside pressure. Everyone knows, but most teams don’t have the personnel to do it
@cellaa705 жыл бұрын
That's not how any team would really defend him one a team would a really good back end then they would need fast line backers and only a few teams match up well with the ravens and them teams are SF AND BILLLS then the jets and maybe NE just cause they can play man on man and mix in some wide 9 on defense and yes I'm a raven fan but they have to live with making play with his speed what you are trying to say won't work bro no matter what it's going to be 10 on 11 football because of how fast he is

at 10:27 is the problem, the was so much space on the left side to run. when he reads the side you coming in, he will just run either on the right or left

You mean, DON'T throw 3 straight incompletions when there's less than 2 minutes on the clock and the Ravens have zero timeouts left?

2nd Mandrews TD, in Lamar's presser after the game he acknowledged that he was responsible for reading that particular defender. He knew the guy was there and coming. Mandrews was still in his route so Lamar did what he was supposed to do, make the blitzer miss and buy that extra time for his reciever to complete his route. Lamar even said that when he was trying to throw it earlier but the blitzer grabbed his arm, but that's ok he made the defense pay for that... 6 pts Baltimore Touchdown

I think this kind of scheme can work, the problem is that you have to have your secondary be perfect every time, and that's just not something you can expect. Also, on the five verts touchdown, he said in a postgame interview that he recognized that guy would be free and that was his guy to beat. If he actually wasn't seeing it on some of these, it might still be hard to think you can count on that happening again because he has a lot of time to go over this and he learns quickly

I wonder why they run so many verticals with so many people in the same area at the same time
@ericlee31655 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that it allows him to run if they're covered. With 14 sec left and no timeouts, he wouldn't run, but like the Rams and Jets games, he has nothing but green in front of him.

JT love your channel! Going to watch Lamar destroy the Titans tomorrow, and I’ll be using what I learned from your videos to watch the defensive schemes.
@ep79755 жыл бұрын
JT, the fact that @ 5:08 you "have no idea what this player is doing" is why Lamar is the man. The middle player (S) is trying to read Lamar's eyes, and Lamar looked him off KNOWING that would give his TE a free run down the seam. I think your ABSOLUTELY wrong when you say he's "not sound" He's more sound than you realize. Bill, and Tom will have their hands full with this guy in the playoffs for sure!

Jt. Greetings. Watch the new England game. When the patriots lined up in punt block. The ravens ran zone running plays. Blockers won thier matchups. There were no players to squeeze down from the second level.
@effyeadude5 жыл бұрын
You should watch the 2nd half of this game, they ran that offensive scheme to get points on the board before half, and the scheme changed to account for the hot man and punt rush in the 2nd half
@Rap_Nova5 жыл бұрын
HE RAN AN EMPTY FORMATION!! Obviously you going to load the box to make him throw the ball faster. How in the world is that a clue of stopping a duel threat QB. You really can’t!
@TheDCGuitar135 жыл бұрын
SportsStar- Highlights it’s not. If anything it’s Lamar daring them to leave him an open receiver.

9:40 man free coverage. Lamar is responsible for the edge blitz to the right side. The ILB in the left A gap stems to the single reciever side expecting a hot read slant, WRONG. Cushion dictates to fire the quick out on his 3rd step. I've watched ever game this season, and Lamar has seen all of these schemes already, that's why he knows exactly where to go with the ball
