@Melissa Harvey My Mother in law just loves “popping” in on me, when I live an hour away from her. She did this one time while my husband I were home, but we didn’t answer the door. She waited in her car for 3 hours, trying to call and text us.

That has been my mindset for two years now. I found out everyone and everything carries certain energy: it is my prerogative to choose the type of energy I allow in my life especially when in circumstances/situation I have total control of, for example a party as opposed to a work situation. I decided to be very picky about places I go and who I hang around. This year I had to say no to a my very close friend who I love and adore so much because I didn't feel like being around her other friends.

The person that brought that friend is putting everyone in an awkward situation. Me, with an unexpected guest at my event. But also the guest, who was probably told it was all good, then gets there and can feel that they're unwanted. Who wants to feel insecure about being an intruder the entire event? So no, you're not doing anyone a favour by bringing people without asking.

I think that's just an awkward part of making new friends, and once you get to know them, you'll eventually get over that feeling and feel wanted. It's a completely different situation, the main difference being that they all organised for you to come (right?), and you weren't just sprung on the host by your friend. From my experience, you'll feel more tight with them as every party comes :)

I hate it when people do that but once someone is in my house, they are my guest and I treat them as such. Hospitality was important in my household growing up and now as an adult it just comes naturally. No one leaves my house hungry, upset, or empty handed. That being said, I expect the same courtesy from guests. Once they out my house, my friend or family member who brought a million ppl gonna hear it. That simple.

As someone who has social anxiety,I try to always bring a friend that I know and am comfortable with if I'm invited to events that I know are gonna be with mostly people I dont really know. BUT I ALWAYS ASK FIRST! I never just show up to the event with my friend. I ask the person right when I'm given the details of the event,and if they say no,well then I just make up some excuse later to why I can't go. 🤷‍♂️

Snatched. Social anxiety is literally something that is just in your head. As long as you live you will have to encounter strangers and you have to know how to co-exist with others unless you live on a deserted island. You have to learn how to relax around others because more often than not, they (guests,etc) are fine, it's you with the problem and that can kill a good vibe. Relax, check your own energy, and have a good time, should you encounter a negative person simply ignore them.

That is a very dangerous thing to do, especially with people who suffer from it. Anxiety it self is not just in someone's head, and requires more than just "relaxing" and calming down. Just because you're getting over it your own way doesn't mean it will work the same for other people. Children have anxiety, animals have anxiety and adults have anxiety. You clearly don't have social anxiety if you can sit here and conflate it with being socially awkward, which is something completely different. I had an old friend who would always show up with an extra person all the time. At first it didn’t really bother me but as times went on even when it was explained that there was only a certain amount of people allowed or limited space. One time when there was a birthday for our mutual friend, She ends up bringing her exes new girlfriend to our friends own birthday party. It made our friend very uncomfortable at her own birthday party and it was just disrespectful. After that we all had to cut ties with her because it was just unbelievable

My aunt invited her coworker /friend to my sister's wedding. The friend brought her whole family too! My sister didn't want her at the wedding and later on it caused a huge issue between our family. The uninvited person took centerpieces and extra things that my sister did not want them to take. Now it's just very awkward.

I had this problem at my wedding. We could only have 50 guest for the reception. My husband gave me the list of the most important family and friends he wanted there and I had mine... 😑well the wedding day comes and it’s the reception and and I notice and uninvited guest on my husbands side of the family came along with a plus one! And it threw off the seating arrangement and I had two of my family members have to sit in a different room from the reception to eat their meal. That had me ticked off. It’s not as though I didn’t want them there, but there was only so much room and MONEY! So only most important people were invited and I just felt offended at that 😕🤷🏽‍♀️.

You just need to know your friends. I have a friend who often brings someone without announcing that someone else is coming. Now I expect it, so I say directly if it is okay to bring extra people or not. Also, when I make reservations, I tell people how many people I have a reservation for and even give them the first names of who is on the reservation so it's clear.

We host a Christmas morning Breakfast every year. My friend and her kids come, but she showed up not only with her kids but the new boyfriend of a month and his 5 kids. I was at my friends birthday party last month that was held at her house, and she got a text from one of our other friends in the middle of the party saying she wants to bring 2 people nobody knew well, and told my friend to kick someone out of the invite to make room for them. I have never understood people who come and they bring another person/people without asking myself and my group of friends. I was raised if you are invited to something you are invited no one else certain exceptions apply such as the person said I could bring a plus one. I have had it before where a friend of mine brought someone else without asking it pisses me off its just so rude especially if you are planning an event like a dinner reservation or a party you need to know how many people are coming so you can plan on how much food you are provided etc. I just accept my friend and the person into my home though and i talk to my friend about it later as i do not want to ruin the night and cause drama etc. I could go on...

At my 40th birthday surprise dinner last summer, my uncle who was was invited with his wife ONLY showed up with his wife, his five kids and another adult friend of his! My poor husband who planned the whole surprise was left with the additional bill as he was too diplomatic to ask my uncle to pay for his additional guests’ food. I totally understand this. I had a friend that was very difficult to be one on one with her cuz she always wanted to socialize in a group setting every time she invited me or we got together it had to be around like 5-8 people. I dont want to always be in a group like WTF I prefer quality over quantity and if she is friends with EVERYONE then I dont want to stay or be friends with her. Now that I think of it she was a really basic friend she probably closer to being an acquaintance than a friend even though I was under the impression she wanted to be friends. I should have tried to set dates to where we can have a one on one but it just seemed futile you cant change people THEY have to want to change if they want you around and it didnt seem like she was going to change her behavior.

This is a hard one for me... coming from a Mexican family you know " mi casa es tu casa" like its literal. People will just show unvited, you throw a party and have a guesstimate of how many people are going to show up so you just get double the food. Forget about putting RSVP on your invitations cause people will get offended and not show up. Granted not all Mexican are like this but most are like that. It's like an unspoken rule ok r something. Having lived on the U.S. most of my life sometimes I wish I could do the RSVP thing but I know it's not possible.
