My Grandfather ( a farmer all of his life) grew huge acres and acres of watermelons in TN. He was a pro, then he would sell them. When he got too old to farm, he taught me when I was at the grocery store to buy a watermelon. He thumped it a certain way, taught me how to thump it & according to the sound of the thump would tell me if the watermelon was ripe or not ripe enough after being pulled from the vine sitting in a grocery store. He passed away 17 yrs ago. I still do his thump listening to the sound before I buy a watermelon from the store, because you don't know how long it has been in the store. 4 times I forgot to thump listening to the sound, and the watermelon wasn't ripe and tasted terrible. I do the thump listening first before buying my watermelon. Works everytime picking the ripest one.

This is super super helpful. I had two melons around back that I've been asking persons about but no one gave me good advice as to know when they are ripe. I watched this video half way through and ran straight outside in the dark with my cellphone light. Checked the curly q and recognized it was dried all the way back. I know it's a bit old school, but it works well and children are especially amazed with this method. Take a long stalk of dead or dried hay field grass or weed and break the seed head off. You want a 10 to 14 inch piece or so, now clear the vines or weeds around the melon surface and wipe it somewhat clean. Balance your sprig as best you can on the melon surface and watch to see its reaction. If it's ripe it'll spin nearly 360°....This is one, of the many ways I've intrigued my children and grandchildren into becoming interested in gardening!

@gp95323 жыл бұрын
With sugar babies you wanna wait another 7-10 days after the tendril has completely dried b4 picking. Sugar babies are on their own schedule ... even in this video, the gentleman noted he could have waited a few more days b4 the melon would have been fully ripe. So dried up tendril doesn't necessarily mean fully ripened.
@CapnAhab893 жыл бұрын
@@gp9532 thanks so much for the tip! My biggest is about halfway dried on the nearest tendril so I have a good ways to go. My melon was a nice color, yellow patch at bottom, some on top, but when I tried this method (of the brown curly cue at junction being all brown) it was totally underripe inside--a little red/pink, but mostly white flesh inside . Maybe it needs to be the Georgian variety for this method to work?

The tentacle on a few of my Crimsons are dried but I've left them on the vine because I like them very ripe and figure it's the best place for it to ripen. But I wonder how long after it's dried can you leave it before it starts to rot? I've checked them and there is not rotting yet... I think the Crimsons are the absolute BEST! From Western NC. Thanks!
@gardeningwithhoss5 жыл бұрын
If you leave them too long, the heart or center of the melon can start to deteriorate. It would be best to pick them and put them under a shade tree. Then you can eat them as you wish. That's what we do.

Since it is a late bloomer and I dont know when they grew out. Do I still follow the stem? The Curly q looks dried out but the watermelon is still light green. The outer skin is very smooth still.

I always plant some in my garden just for family and friends. I picked the first of the Crimson's today. Still waiting on the Jubilee's to ripen. I have lost a few melons this Spring to what appears to be Blossom End Rot. All the Research I have done indicates a lack of Calcium in my dirt. I put out Lime every other year, in the fall. I fertilize with 10-10-10 preplant, then side dress one application of the same when the vines set fruit. You ever have any End Rot in your melons?

Hi, I have a couple of questions. I've read where some people choose to add a tablespoon or so of borax (boron) mixed with water to their vines, because it supposedly increases the likelihood of flowers turning to fruit, and it also makes the fruit sweeter. Do you have an opinion on that? Also, aside from the larger melons, I still have flowers and a few baby melons popping up in my garden, do you think it's still possible at this point for them to reach maturity here in Georgia? Thanks in advance!
@gardeningwithhoss7 жыл бұрын
Never heard of adding Borax to enhance pollination. Bees usually take care of that for us. It's not too late, although the heat can take quite a toll on the plants this time of year.

at 2:50 you can hear the loud cracking sound when it opens; the louder that sound the less ripe the watermelon is. As it ripens the outer shell softens up; too ripe and that outer rind is too soft, another indicator. So, when you are at the store, too soft = too ripe, and too firm (has no give) = immature, not quite ripe. It needs to give just slightly (somewhat like an avo) but even when the rind feels "in between" its not a perfect indicator; its always a gamble. Watermelon is always a gamble but there is no reward without a little risk !!! thanks for the video -- but video more for the gardener than the consumer !! And I have had a garden -- he who can grow a melon deserves the fruit thereof !

Can you pick them and have them ripen in the house? We have a heavy freeze coming? Any way to protect them from the freeze?
@gardeningwithhoss4 жыл бұрын
They will ripen a little if they’re close. But nothing drastic.

Forgot to mention the curly cue your looking for is closest to the melon towards the plant not the other way out the vine
@gardeningwithhoss5 жыл бұрын
Yes, good point.
@bigal259383 жыл бұрын
Cut one today. Curlycue was dried up and the seeds were black. It was still not red enough inside. Tasted great but I think could have ripened longer,

Did the same here, disappointing to say the least

Every year I plant melons. I've yet to get one ripe. Rodents eat ALL of them!! Do you have any suggestion?

How do you walk through that field without stepping on any vines? I have 3 watermelon plants and they are so sprawled out I can't even approach the plants anymore lol

Need help. I have a half acre of watermelons. I noticed two giant watermelons that look ripe but rather than having the dark green color its very light green. Are they ripe or should I wait longer for the green color to darken like the others?
@gardeningwithhoss4 жыл бұрын
Could just be that they are lighter because they received more sunlight.
@user-wi4nj7ms6j4 жыл бұрын
Hoss Tools ah geez...they’ve been there for weeks..now they must be bad by now. I had no idea the sun can do that.

Hello, I would like to plant watermelon seeds crimson sweet and my question is and you grafted them with squash seed yes yes what variety because I already try with watermelon seeds that I consume but it remains small thank you for your answer for France
@gardeningwithhoss7 жыл бұрын
We don't graft our watermelons. We plant from seed in our greenhouse and then transplant into the garden.

Ok I just harvested my first few watermelons and they are the juiciest I have ever had. I have two more that are close and 1 looks done and sounds done but the tendril is still completely green and the other doesn't look that close and has been brown for a long time now. Is this method 100% or is there exceptions. Like maybe that vine didn't get a lot of water or something like that. All of my ripe crimson sweet melons have been about 20 lbs and the one with the completely green tendril is even bigger than that. It is difficult to believe that it needs another week or 2.
@gardeningwithhoss2 жыл бұрын
yes, the tendril needs to be dry.
@Thought_Criminal_132 жыл бұрын
@@gardeningwithhoss it is weird that it has been going as long as the ones I have harvested yet the tendril is still completely green and the other one has not been going as long and is completely brown

My watermelons are already extremely big maybe 1ft6in or maybe a bit more... the tendril is totally green and full of life... that means i have to wait longer right?
@gardeningwithhoss7 жыл бұрын
Correct. When the tendril is dried, the plant has delivered enough water and nutrients to the fruit. Until then, those are still being delivered.
@pozeidon317 жыл бұрын
thanks man! ill keep watering them :) Another question... should I lift them from the soil with a plastic plate (upside down)? I heard they should be separated from the soil but so far they have been growing fine...
@gardeningwithhoss7 жыл бұрын
We leave ours on the dirt and they always do just fine. We grow way too many to use a technique like that.

I just found grub worms eating holes in the bottoms of my watermelons! and I used milky spore last year. now I have tiles and plastic lids under mine. btw, what if I pick an unripe watermelon? will it get ripe off the vine?
