Not sure if buying deep makes a difference. Once prices increase substantially after retirement, the people that are willing to pay those kind of prices are collectors or speculators. They would want to see pictures of the actual item to determine the condition. I've certainly never bought an expensive EOL set without seeing pictures of the item.

This year over 300 sets are going to retire and I wonder what the impact of that will be for investors. Does that mean that the total investment capital will spread over many more models than usual, effectively leading to less hoarded items per model (as compared to a setting where only 150 sets would have retired this year)? On the other hand there will be way more different 2023 retired models to chose from in the future secondary market which will create more competition among the models. Do those two things cancel each other out?

I think both things are at play. The investment dollars being spread out helps me, since I know how to pick winning sets and mostly avoid duds. But LEGO producing the most sets per year it ever has, at higher avg price point than ever, and cranking up production post covid has definitely resulted in oversupply, which will dampen price appreciation for years going forward.

The chess set was 20% off last October during a double VIP points weekend. One thing worth noting is the box is pretty massive and the listing is restricted on Amazon, at least for me.

Valid, I appreciate the correction. By restricted, do you mean it lacks a display price? I just searched and was able to easily find the set listing, but no buy box. I had to click in to see all the sellers.

Great job folks! Great takes on some interesting sets. LOVE Thors hammer as investment at a good discount (at least 30%). Chess sets don’t seem to do well without the mini figures, but an interesting discussion/pick!

I know the hammer is a target exclusive, but on the flip side I don't see much demand pushing the price up. I've said what I said! And yeah, I want to like the Chess set so badly but it just isn't a buy for me. Thanks for watching and for the thoughtful comment.

Parting out a mistake purchase could work if you already have a Bricklink store, but I think that's a minority of LEGO investors. Also a HUGE time commitment with slow inflows of revenue. I'd sooner save the time and just sell at a loss. Personal preference!
