I think that if you invested in numerous 5 gallon buckets with lids, you could ferment your feed in the buckets and save much labor in scooping feed out of the larger barrels.

I'm glad to see that you are soaking your pigs' feed. I always think, when I see people feeding dry feed to their pigs, that it wouldn't be very enjoyable to have to eat dry powdery feed. It would be like us trying to eat a bag of flour rather than a piece of bread. Also, great to see how those cute little piglets are growing up.

I fed my pigs dry food for exactly one day. They wasted 1/3, ate 1/3 and left the rest in the food dish…their poop was mostly undigested feed and looked exactly like it did before they ate it. Now I soak and ferment so it tastes sour to me, like sauerkraut. Now the pigs lick their feed dish clean. I’m guessing it’s better to soak/ferment.

I remember back in the day soaking shucked corn in a 55 gallon drum, the pigs loved it, really chowed down on it. Course, like everything else, feed mixtures change over time, I'm talking back in the late 50's early 60's.

And on whole maize soaked in skimmed milk, or whey, the pigs did fine. Obviously not at present feed conversion rates. But there was lots of bacon and sausage. And lard for soap.

I am from the 50s and 60s we always soaked our pig feed 5 gallon buckets hard several so would atlest soak 72 hours would leave in grainery during summer and next to the heater stove in winter house smelled like brewery as the feed mixture fermented lol lol soaked fermented feed actually better feed for pigs because of softening of of whole grains (we used ground corn and barley most the time ) but at time got good deal on wheat and oats whole grain that we would include in the feeding chickens also got some soaked gains Fermented feed is very beneficial over dry feed and animals actually do better also

Formula for pigs on pasture/woods is 1 Lb per dry weight feed/day per month of age up to 5 months.

Have you ever experimented with silage for pigs? I saw asians do that a lot, in mild climate should be possible to use corn, pumpkin, alfa alfa, sudan grass...

A FEW QUESTIONS/COMMENTS. Isn't 5lbs per day for those smaller pigs too much? Feeding dry meal as in the beginning of the presentation causes a huge amount of lost feed. Pre-fermenting causes total nutritional uptake without any trace of grain in the scat. Plus. Most of the wet bits stay together and is so consumed.

Surprise to see Merida still around. Her reluctant to be loaded into the trailer for the butcher 3 years ago really payoff for her. Didn't you said you and your friends would take care of it back then? What made you change your mind? How many year before a sow can stay prime to sower piglets?
