I always wondered if they simply issued an open invitation to the wedding to everyone in Salzburg. The only guests on the bride's side should have been the Reverend Mother and the Sisters and I doubt that even the Captain knew enough people to fill a church that size!

What an insult to this beautiful classic film. Even though the real Maria Von Trapp admitted in her book that she loved the children more than the Captain, at least she did not marry him for his title, his money, or simply for publicity and they were married until the Captain's death. I very much doubt that the recent "fairytale" will last that long.

@jackhughes39817 жыл бұрын
You need to appreciate the context, at the start of the film they are complaining because Maria (being someone who clearly didn't have a calling to monastic life) is disrupting the life of the community by her tardiness and general clumsiness. I tried my vocation as a Carmelite monk, and for the same reasons I found monastic life very difficult and left after six months. In this scene the same qualities are being used to describe her in a positive light as they suit her for her vocation of motherhood.

If you pay attention, there's an amusing continuity error in the procession scene. At 0:42, Maria is very close to the stone stairway leading up to the altar, but in the next scene, at 0:48, she's mysteriously returned to a point farther back in the aisle. This, of course, does nothing to take away from the beauty of the scene, but it's nevertheless interesting to movie fans who enjoy spotting little mistakes like this.

I'm dying to know who everyone in the pews are. That church/cathedral looks huge! The Captain and Maria must have had a larger circle of friends than the movie shows!
@musicaltheatergeek797 жыл бұрын
They did show it. Remember that huge party they hosted, where Maria & Georg danced and the children sang goodnight? All of them were the Captain's friends, and that party was to introduce them to Elsa, his then fiancée. One suspects they attended this wedding, too.
@mylesgarcia46257 жыл бұрын
THe church is NOT large at all. I visited it a few weeks ago. It's a very modest-sized church but indeed, on the widescreen, it looks like a Cathedral. It's not. The people in the pews are the citizens of Mondsee who were invited as extras for the film. In real life, Maria and Georg were married in the small chapel of Nonneberg Abbey. But hey, that's Hollywood.

Keep in mind, he is also decorated hero and former officer of the (now defunct) Austro-Hungarian Imperial Navy, and a former member of the aristocracy, even if he only held the hereditary title of Ritter(effectively "Knight", not Baron as he is often mistaken and I believe the portray him in the film). His wedding is kind of a big deal for the local people.

Sofie u, only their chaplain (a priest) is allowed in a cloistered convent. One or two nuns are designated to have contact with the world. Limited consumer goods used to be delivered on a turnstile. A doctor might visit in an emergency or nuns will accompany anyone who has to visit the dentist. The "grill" signifies that the nun is married to Christ and separated from the world. Some orders only allow one family visit/year. Few such strict orders exist now. Many nuns don't even wear habits, just plain street clothes.

Loved this movie for years! Then, found out that Christopher Plummer hated it, was drunk during most of the filming & was having an affair with the woman who played Liesel. Plummer referred to the movie as "The Sound of Mucus!" Took the romance right out of it, for me!
@reallyjustme5 жыл бұрын
Doesn't make any difference to me. Actors don't have to love their role to play it well. And he did play it well, considering that you loved the movie until you read or saw his interview. And if some glasses of alcohol helped him, it worked. Charmian Carr was 21, almost 22 years old, Plummer was 34. When two adults have an affair, I don't see any problems. Actors in movies don't really love each other, you know. That's why it's called acting.
@joyk23274 жыл бұрын
I think they never admitted an affair. She said she had a huge crush with him and drank a lot with him, but according to Nicholas Hammond she said there was never anything physical, even though Plummer apparently had some girlfriends out there. On the other hand, Plummer has always said that his crush was with Julie Andrews, and not for a movie, but since he saw her in My Fair Lady on Broadway, almost ten years before (even, being a dramatic actor, he auditioned for the next play of Julie "Camelot", but was not accepted), but Andrews was out of reach and he let off steam by drinking.

@@krisbarnes9083 - the comment was just about Julie being a mother. She had young Emma (born late 1962) with her during the filming (in 1964). That is a matter of record not any kind of insinuation. A lot of women put on a few inches around the waist after becoming mothers. The original comment was about her (still) trim waistline.
