@dondakota9205 ай бұрын
@@woman.driven Doris, was just talking with a lady friend of mine who is also a fan of tangerines and she didn't understand how the gears could work because they would make the camshafts spin in opposite directions. She is correct, the lobes are ground to operate in a reverse direction on one of them. Gears are usually the best way to drive a camshaft but chain is cheapest. However when overhead cams become popular it becomes more difficult to use chains so belts became the best option for a typical car. I agree belts are usually best but there are exceptions. Engines like the great LS Chevy and the legendary Big Block Fords that defeated Ferrari as well as the 426 hemi that powered the wing cars to victory all use a basic timing chain similar to those used in our earliest OHV V8s. What I liked most about belts is they are usually cheap and easy to replace. I like when customers smile when they see the bill rather than getting a bill for chains, guides, gaskets, a few valves and machine work. Timing chain failure can get expensive on OHC engines today. Gotta run, my lady friend says she's got some tangerines for me so I'm stoked!!!

Another great video Doris. Mark all of the cam caps and make sure they go back in the same position on the head. You should also loosen the cam cap bolts evenly from one end of the cam to the other because uneven pressure can cause the camshaft to break.

Neat vid. Thank you WD. Subscribed. My Toy 3RZ 2.7 is 30 years old in my 94 SR5. Less than 1% leakdown across all 4. Static compression is 1-2 psi from the factory specs, across all 4. 345k miles. Oil changed every 3000 all its life and for about 1/2 it's life it received Prolong Engine Treatment with those changes. Then the Prolong was unavailable for awhile so I stopped using it. Did it help??. It seems to have. I peeked waay around inside with fiber cam and everything looks ok. In thru each spark plug hole to take a peek. In thru the oil drain hole to look at the bottom end. It does have a very slight rear main seal leak, but no puppy puddles anywhere, it just seeps a bit. Maybe the Prolong helped that seal last? Dunno. Prolong WAS mixing up it's own treated 70wt nitro hemi motor oil for the NHRA Top Fuel teams.
@riceburner47475 ай бұрын
The oil on those 2 plugs could be rubber gasket (4) on your valve cover. U may be able to get a short block from Toyota that has everything but head & those parts. I'm excited for you to accomplish this. You are doing a super job. 😍👍

Doris Those who say its not a big deal to remove cam caps in order are not engine builders. It matters since you can potentially warp the Cams. Those Gears on the Cams are part of the cam timing. The oil in Cyl #1 is from either the Valve stem seal or the oil control rings judging by the scratched on the cyl wall id say the Oil rings were bad. Use 5 Star Engines to get the Block, Head and Crank cleaned. They are Located on 56th ave off Glendale.

It is a very important matter before assembling the engine parts. I hope you clean it from the inside, I mean the water drains, because they contain salts and old rust. You have to take it to a specialist to remove these deposits. They have a special machine and then change all parts of the engine cooling cycle. Good luck baby.♥️🌸

Great video, Doris. Just so you know, the two-piece gear on one of the cams is called a "scissor." gear. Its purpose it to create tension between the two gears, thus, eliminating lash. The reason for all of the oil is faulty valve guide seals. That is a common problem on these engines. A head rebuild will cure that problem. Speaking of the head; don't try to disassemble it yourself. Let the machine shop do that. They have all the proper spring compressors and things to get the job done right. To answer your trivia question I will say that the piston and rod assembly you showed is out of a top fuel nitro car. They are limited to 500 cubic inches and use a gigantic aluminum rod. Probably a Keith Black or one of several others who build those engines. Keep up the great work. Love your videos.
@woman.driven5 ай бұрын
Thanks for explaining the gears on the cams :) as for the head, I already removed everything lol. But I will be taking it to a shop for cleaning and all else along with the block. Spot on with the top fuel piston 😊

For starters, Toyota engines have tendencies of not dying. I live in Okinawa, Japan, and used to own a Caldina GT-T sports wagon AWD that sported the 3SGTE. Before getting rid of it, I had over 250,000 km (whatever that is in miles) and still ran well. Always did my oil change, and kept the turbo clean. Basic maintenance. Never did anything to "boost" the performance. Loved it for what it was. The only issue I had in the beginning, the timing belt snapped and the turbo blew. Again, this was the first 2 years of owning the car. After that, never had a problem. I had the car for a total of 10 years. The transmission was starting to slip (automatic) and leaking from the steering lines. It was a hard choice of spending a lot of money for repairs on the transmission and steering or getting rid of it. Obviously, elected to rid of it. Parts for that engine are everywhere. Someone mentioned upgrading your piston and rods to the 3SGTE that's usually found in the 90's era MR-2 turbo(along with the Celica GT-FOUR and Caldina GT-T). Do it!! That'll punch that engine up to 250+ hp. It'll outperform that Shelby if you put more into it😅. Just kidding, but it will be a lot of fun to drive.
