How Does a Button Lock on a Knife Work?

As requested, in this video I show the basics of how a folding knife button lock works. The example I use, a Hogue Extreme EX-01, is a manual folder, but I also explain how the same lock would work on a side opening automatic knife.

Thank you for the video. I am looking at purchasing a SOG now with a button lock. I have never used one on an assisted opening knife. I had a lock fail me once when it counted, so I never buy a knife without checking out the locking mechanism. I am not a big fan of liner or frame locks, although some are ok. The close up--once in focus--showed how well it works with your explanation. Good job.

Good video. My preferred lock is still the Cold Steel Triad. It mihgt not be as fashionable as the button lock or the farme locks, but it is strong as hell. I have an old Rajajh II I bouhgt to scrw around with and I just can't brake that lock I've beaten the hell put of it and it is still good. But I guess the button lock would work OK on smaller folders.

Thanks for this video. I was just looking at auto buttons on knifekits and working out if it could be used as a lock system.. and then I found your video.

The Benchmade Nagara Nak-Lock design is a similar (in function) lock only it uses a modified "liner lock" with a pass through button that depresses the inner liner instead of a compression spring as with your Hogue. I've got some Hogue grips...I wasn't aware they made knives! Learn something new every day. Great explanation buddy! Keep the great videos coming my Friend! Cheers!! Zip

Yeah, you are the second one to mentions that. I really wish they had gone with a solid color on this. If it wasn't for the G-mascus and the lock, it would be 100% IMO

It is an interesting presentation. A chance to learn from the mistakes of others..... A couple years ago I closed a SOG Trident on one of my fingers. Yes, I was doing something that a folder was not meant for. The point is that no lock is truly a lock, only a device to protect the moderately careless person. If you want to really work at doing harm to your nose pickers, it will happen at an inconvenient time. Play safe.

I wonder how many openings an auto button lock folder can take? My Spyderco Citadel slams open, seems like it's going to be hard on the knife, long term.

I love button locks, I started out using knives for work with a button lock mastercraft folding box cutter. It was smooth, easy to use, and I beat the shit out of it and it still worked. So I bought a Kershaw Dimension and boy did that thing suck ass, button lock broke within 2 weeks. I heard Benchmade NakLock sucks too. How can Mastercraft create a a great button lock folder for $11? Yet a $70 kershaw and $200 Benchmade fuck it up?

I havnt really seen much from Houge but if they made a less beefy knife I'd probably try it. It seems like they're doing good in the button lock department
