I subscribed without looking at any other videos just because anybody who is willing to make a compost outhouse is cool with me.

Thanks for tackling this dirty topic! I like this idea, as I also have clay. Also the wife was worried about spiders and what not hanging out in the dark hole. At least with this, the back is easily accessible to get rid of any of those critters.

Nice dry toilet! I highly recommend The Humanure Handbook by Joe Jenkins if you haven't read it yet. He also has a youtube channel under Joe Jenkins. Helped us a bunch to get our sanitation system going since we don't have septic or sewage where we reside.

I understand you can use leaves or any light brown matter to help with odor and keeping things dry. Im wondering about the flies. I just set up an diy 4' deep doggy dooley which has a secure fly proof lid. You don't smell much at all.

Thanks for showing the not so pretty side of tent life. Have you thought about setting up a solar panel?

Thanks for the video. I got a few questions for you. I long does it roughly take for the bucket to get half full and how many people are using it how often (like daily, only weekends or such). I was also wondering how long it roughly takes for the last one to get decomposed. Thanks in advance.
@mytwelveacres30712 жыл бұрын
Frederik, thanks for watching. Using it mainly on the weekends, The container may be half full after a month. We tend to use plenty of wood chips so they comprise most of the volume. Our composting bin loses volume as it decomposes, so we just keep adding to it. Hope that helps

Hey bud, great idea! I do want to give it a go but my only question is have you used it in the winter?… that’s the only time I would be using mine as I have a wall tent for the winter. Curious if you’ve tried it
@mytwelveacres3071 Жыл бұрын
Hey Jason , absolutely it works in the winter! Use lots of cedar chips to keep things loose because it will freeze. That way you can dump it in your composting area if it gets full. Thanks for watching!

Nice setup, one question I have is does the urine go into the same bucket or did you drill any small holes for the urine to go into the ground. I know when the urine and poo mix is when it starts to stink much more, Thank you!
@mytwelveacres30712 жыл бұрын
Hey Siegel, yes I have a number holes in the bottom. I also have stone under the container to help drain the liquid away. The use of cedar chips after every use helps keep any odor to a minimum. Thanks for watching!

How long does it take to break down and how often do you have to clear out your compost box thing? Or do you even have to?
@mytwelveacres307110 ай бұрын
We have never cleaned out the composting bin. it just breaks down enough that there always seems to be room for the next time we empty our outhouse. We even add leaves and sometimes grass clippings to help in the composting. We've never had issues with smells either. Thanks for watching!

Weird ? But I wonder if I put a manure composting near the vegie composting if it would keep the bears away? We have a difficult time with it attracting bears in our town

Hydrated lime works great for smell and helps break it down

I've had the opportunity to deal with a number of outhouses that used lime. After using cedar chips I would definitely say I prefer them over the lime. Thanks for watching!

Good job I'm looking for alternative Out house ideas As the town I live in Has old bylaws stating a no repair no replace septic tank Claus stating u must hook up to toe Town city sewer system. That's gonna cost @ 8 ,000.00 to 15,000.00 Dollars. We still have our own well. So will have to start thinking of a new plan Or temp plan while under going reconstruction.

I hate to be a pest, but I have lots of questions 😅 how close is this to your dwelling? What kind of wiping material do you use, and does it break down as well? And I saw another another comment about drain holes for pee - could (would 😂) you elaborate on that? Thanks for posting such helpful content!
@mytwelveacres30713 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for the questions. we drilled approximately a dozen 3/4 inch holes in the bottom of the plastic container. We didn't want to have a chance of there being a large liquid build up. Any excess liquid is allowed to escape through the bottom into a bed of stone. This is a pretty dry system , most if not all the liquid is absorbed by the chips. We use regular toilet paper. When the container gets half full we dump it in the dedicated composting bin, most of the decomposition takes place there. There is very little smell with this system as long as you use plenty of cedar chips after each use. Thanks for watching!
@ooulalah433313 күн бұрын
@@mytwelveacres3071Had the same 2 questions. I'm thinking of using a little smaller bin to make emptying easier and maybe a urine diverter to be able to empty it a safe distance and water it into the ground occasionally. Idk but this is great.
