As a matter of fact, in a quiet room, you can hear a snail chewing without special equipment if your ears are in good shape. I had a few as pets (well, livestock that I never got around to eating), and when they had access to cabbage or carrots, I could very clearly hear them crunching away simply by putting my ear near them. It was... cute, I think.

That makes perfect sense. They use a very slow yet strong conveyer belt-like method of gliding along surfaces. Being covered in the sound absorbing slime they are, it only seems logical they'd be silent for as long as they didn't get hit by anything.

But you also have to consider how slow it's moving and the liquid/slime at the bottom of the snail might dull the sound.

The snail is also sliding on a smooth glass table with slime secreted from its body so the friction would be significantly reduced so it might make sound on different, rougher surfaces.

I feel like this 'experiment' just reveals common sense. Of course, when amplified, you can hear maggots squirm, centipedes walk and snails crunch a leaf. And yes, a snail is essentially silent on a pane of glass, but place it on sand, or gravel, and you will inevitably hear that movement.

I’m gonna beg to differ on the snail movement being quiet. Last night I had one on my window and it sounded like a raccoon chortleing. I went outside to look for the raccoon and could not see anything. I heard the sound on the window that’s when I looked up and saw the snail. The only possible thing nearby that could be responsible I didn’t believe it but as I followed the snail I heard the sound as he went higher on the window as well. Baffling

well the snail was silent while moving because it was on glass. if you had it move on a rough surface it would have a sound, as minor as it would be, never the less it would have make some type of sound on rougher surface.
@Praxis4RageBaiting8 жыл бұрын
+Brit Lab I am unsatisfied with your science. I do not agree with your science methods, namely that just because your instruments don't pick it up means the snail is silent. Your colleague in the video seemed unfortunately too polite to correct you on this matter.

@x-iso8 жыл бұрын

Dont agree. He says its silent "With the best sound recording equipment on the world". He doesnt say a snail does not make any noise at all. And, maybe a little bit more correct, does the other guy say it is inaudible.
@Captain__Obvious8 жыл бұрын
Silence is by definition 0db SPL which means inaudible to the human ear. There are plenty of sounds quieter than this, we simply cannot hear them. The quietest anechoic chamber in the world is -9db. The sound of a conversation 20 miles away is -30 db. The sound of a shrimp chewing food as measured on a nuclear submarine is apparently -80db. There are "quantum microphones" that have recorded the sound of a single atom. These are all by definition silent.
