2020 and the disadvantages listed at 10:10 are pretty much gone. The meaningful charging time is like 15min now in a L3 SC going from 20% to 80% which is more than sufficient to travel 250 mi to next SC if on a long drive. For city driving, it is inconsequential as you charge at home and leave home with full tank of charge so to speak. Range is 315+ miles for LR Teslas which matches close to a gas car of about 360 mi. The S and X are 400 mi now. The cost is now in $50k range which is opening it up to a pretty huge segment of the market already.

@Marmocet6 жыл бұрын
BEVs are quiet, there's no doubt about that, but most of the noise light vehicles of any kind emit, whether they're BEV, ICEVs or hybrids, comes from their tires, not their drivetrains. Also, there's nothing about BEVs that makes things like large screens and over the air updates exclusive to them. ICEVs and hybrids can just as easily incorporate these features too. Hybrids, and even certain ICEVs can deliver ranges of 600 or more miles between recharges/refueling, so in that respect, they're still by far superior to BEVs, especially when cost is taken in to consideration. I'm all in favor of clean transportation, especially because I do a lot of my travel by bicycle and I wind up having to inhale what comes out of people's tailpipes, but it's useful to have these little reality checks from time to time so we don't get too carried away with the hype.

@frisosmit89207 жыл бұрын
PhazonSouffle that's a great idea, but I think it runs into some practical problems like how do you have batteries for every type of electrical car at most gas stations
@MetallicReg7 жыл бұрын
PhazonSouffle Not only that. There are many technical problems with that approach. It has been already tested several times (mostly by electro scooter companies in Japan). You also need a significant number of spare battery packs scattered across the country. People don't like the inconsistency - some drive responsibly and treat the batteries better than others. They don't want lower distances because somebody else likes to race at their maximum etc. To sum this up: This is prehistoric fuel car logic. It is not you who needs to drive somewhere to fuel up - it is the fuel that needs to be present everywhere - aka electricity. The next step is, that the cars manage their charge themselves - followed by a crowd intelligence car sharing system.
@Drodrod7 жыл бұрын
Tesla has done that. They showed it at stage a couple years back, it took three minutes or so for a change. They opened a station between LA and SF but apparently it wasn't very popular.
@aceroadholder21857 жыл бұрын
That won't be easy. The only new successful battery technology in the last 125 years has been lithium ion. LI technology hasn't been much improved in the last 30 years... the Tesla is running on AA batteries because if you make them much larger they do things like catch on fire. Unfortunately, chemistry puts the kibosh on new "breakthrough" battery technology. You will note that there is a new "battery breakthrough" announced about every six months... and then crickets. That's been going on for the last 100 years.

It is just that lithium ion has an advantage of being extremely versatile and does not pollute the environment as much as those alternatives. Mostly they are disqualified by incompatibility with the devices we use. Some others (like nano-diode enhancement) are simply way too expensive to be able to scale up right now.

I know this was posted 6 years ago but that 2025 date is fast approaching and as expected EV's will never make ICE cars obsolete. EV's are still less than 1% of the entire U.S. auto fleet for many reasons. The disadvantages mentioned here for the EV were very few and have many more than an ICE car. The first is pollution free. EV's cause far more pollution than ICE cars. The dirty mining process of rare earths metals to produce those 1 ton batteries, to having to use fossil fuels to charge them, to the end of life of dumping highly toxic lithium in landfills is a highly polluting process. Much of an ICE car can be recycled while EV batteries aren't. Add to this that they use coolant for the batteries just like ICE cars use coolant, they also have brake parts, brake fluid, steel for the body, glass and plastic for the windows and lights, rubber tires...ect. The other problem is cold weather. The battery range of these is far less in colder climates. ICE engines are actually an innovation over the EV's. They were able to invent all the parts required to make it run efficiently, economically, longer lasting and much more affordable to the consumer. The other problem is cost of maintenance. They are highly computerized and the batteries themselves are very dangerous which means only a specialized dealer can service them which also drives up the cost of ownership. The reason why ICE engines will remain is because the essentially an EV is nothing but a giant battery. The power source is stationary and built into the car which is a huge flaw in itself since its temporary and degrading. The ICE engine on the hand has it's power source externally. So it can be added and replenished whenever needed. Additionally, it can use competing fuel sources such as gasoline, diesel, ethanol, natural gas and hydrogen thus making it far more versatile. An EV can only be powered by a battery that is permanently locked into the car. It's very permanent power source which is also large percentage of it's value is designed to fail. The EV predates the ICE car by around 50 years for many reasons. The ICE engine car is an innovation over the EV. Converting to an EV would be a regression rather than a progression.

The performance of the car will increase far beyond petrol cars in the future. Also its not like the ways of extracting oil and manufacturing petrol cars doesn't pollute just as much or event more so than producing electric cars. So you've removed one polluter in the chain when you make electric cars. Seems like an improvement to me. Also lack of lithium isn't such a big problem because 1 recycling batteries and 2 we still don't know how much lithium there is in the world as it hasn't been nearly aggressively looked for as oil. Remember when everyone said oil was going to run out but then they found gas? Similar things can happen with lithium. Also lithium ion batteries may not even be the best batteries out there making lithium less of a problem. If you have vision you can easily see the electric is the future even with its issues. Please stop trying to sell half truths as the only truth.

This is great! It makes me think there is something shady going on back in the early 1900s against Nikola Tesla. I mean, you see the side-by-side comparison like this between ICE and the Tesla motor, and ICE simply looks so archaic- all those parts that can wear out, and all driven by small explosions-it just seems like caveman stuff. I’m so glad we’re finally advancing past that.

Very interesting and excellently realized video. Many thanks! As a passive safety engineer myself, I would like to add that the presence of the battery pack increases the torsional stiffness for sure, but not so much for lateral impact safety (the battery structure must be protected, thus the intrussions are to be managed via the body-in-white rocker structure mainly). Also for the front unit crumple zone, yes, it is largely increased (if a front motor does not exist), but in counterpart, the rear crumple zone is more difficult to manage comapred to an ICE car (the rear motor and invertor must be protected in the case of rear impact). Thanks again, hope my comments would be accepted as constructive opinion. No intention of critisism.

As we have seen after Hurricane Ian in Florida, many electric vehicles burst into flames after water breached the batter compartment of several electric cars. These cars when bursting into flames have en extremely HOT flame as it is a "chemical reaction" and not necessarily a regular fire.

@jaromirandel5433 жыл бұрын
@Americannovice Twocentnovice You sure? The electric car will be more eco-friendly than gas powered car only when it will last more than 8.5 years or 127 500 km. After around 5 years the battery is worn out and the electric car have negative value. So, actually it will never be eco-friendly because the pollution caused by production and recycling is too high in comparsion with gas powered cars. Actually the most eco-friendly cars are the CNG and H2 powered cars. Also I have car since 1999. No rust on it. It is like new, engine in best shape. :) I don't have money to get new 50 000 USD car every 5 years. Actually it takes around 10 years to save 50 000 USD. The source of information is JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH. The recycliing of batteries is 5 times more expensive than making the new one.
@jaromirandel5433 жыл бұрын
@Americannovice Twocentnovice To make electric car more eco friendly than CNG or H2 powered cars, the whole car must be produced by using 100% renewable resources. Witch actual resouces it can not be. Even in Austria or Germany which are the countries with one of the highest ratio of renewable resouces in Europe it is not more eco-friendly than CNG or H2 cars right now. The electric cars must be produced in Norway (99% of power is collected by water power plants in Norway) to make them eco-friendly.
@jaromirandel5433 жыл бұрын
@Americannovice Twocentnovice If someone wants to deal with pollution produced by transporting, he should start with big ships. One cargo ship will create more pollution than 2000000 Volkswagen Passats 2.0 TDI at the same time.
@pvosoccer15853 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is true due to the nature of a "scientific propaganda" (if such exists!) I personally Refused to believe that the Electric Car is Pollution-free (at least not so directly) as stated during the induction of this program, because it was so naively explained. The author like to jump on the bandwagon of such a doctrine. Moreover, the author had failed to explain anything and where the pollution sources are in making the electric cars and batteries and electronics control are located, as well as where the source of generation of electrical power and the delivery of electrical power over transmission lines so the users can charge their car batteries. Okay, so you can say "who cares?" But then this is intellectually dishonest for those who know enough sciences and are not some ordinary elementary students. This comment shall constitute an honest praise for being able to bypass the scrutiny of a scientific community, because it is made for entertainment, just like those claims to have methods for making "free-energy" electrical generations, among other things.
