I remember watching a random episode of charlie brown as a kid. The scene showed charlie walking to bed saying "i need more hello's not goodbye's" it was probably the most depressing things i seen on television. It was one of those rare moments on tv that haunts every select few kids.

Snoopy Come Home as a whole is just depressing...even for Peanuts...I still can't watch it without crying during Snoopy's farewell party scene and then watching Charlie Brown go through what is one of the WORST depressive episodes I've ever seen, even for him.

Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, modeled Charlie Brown after his childhood self. As a young kid in school, Schulz was never well liked and didn't have many friends. Most people treated him poorly and he was very depressed as a kid because of it. That's why in the original Peanuts Charlie is always melancholy and the other characters are often mean to him, because that's what it was like for Charles Schulz growing up, and he took that theme and put it on to paper in his cartoon.

I remember how much my grandfather loved peanuts. When he was dying he'd always watch charlie brown, and I remember being in preschool watching it with him. I think now he had some sort of depression. It runs in my family, my mother, sister, and brother. I dont really have it, more just tired and tired of being tired, anhedonia and suppression. I love charlie brown because of how much I relate to him and the simplicity and subtlety, and his history in my family.

This is really insightful. Peanuts is full of characters who deal with mental illness and neurodivergency (Linus’ dependence on his blanket, Schroeder’s “special interest” in Beethoven and Marcie’s mix of intelligence and “spaciness” all could be interpreted as ADHD, autism or both). it is a great conversation starter both for kids who live with these things themselves and those around them. Which is precisely why I’m so damn angry that Apple TV+ has thrown these classics behind a paywall! They should be accessible to all kids.

A Charlie Brown Christmas always spoke to me, as a kid, and today. No other Christmas special for kids dealt with feelings of depression and slowed down the pace to highlight that very aspect. It’s a treasure. And it shows kids (and adults) that they’re not alone.

I think growing up with Charlie Brown as an American kid really helped me cope with the way I felt, and feel now for that matter. I’d get to watch the Christmas special almost every year on television (or from one of my teachers or family members), and watching the way Charlie Brown felt or talked made me know that the way I was feeling wasn’t wrong, without me even realizing it had. I didn’t ever pick up on that, so great analysis on your part!

I’m a junior in highschool and currently am performing as Charlie Brown in my school’s spring musical. Before this play, I was rather clueless to the peanuts. I never knew he was depressed. I never understood that he was such a deep character. But performing as him has really helped me to understand his character. He has so many layers. He’s depressed but he always tries to find the best in the world. He finds ways to use his depression to better understand the world and to better himself. He’s a smart kid. It’s easy to see yourself in Charlie Brown just because he’s so… deep. I think we can all find a little bit of ourselves inside of Charlie Brown.
@TammiLyn39
@TammiLyn39 Жыл бұрын
Charlie Brown’s first monologue in the musical really shows this. “I think lunch time is about the worst time of day for me, always having to sit here… alone. Of course, mornings aren’t so pleasant either. Laying there and wondering if anyone would really miss me if I never got out of bed. And then there’s the night too. Thinking about all the stupid things I’ve done during the day. And all those times in between… when I do all those stupid things. Well, lunch time is among the worst times of day for me.”

There are a lot of hyper-polished video essayists out there at this point, and I think your under-produced style is pretty refreshing and could definitely serve to endear you/distinguish you. I've always kinda related to Charlie Brown growing up. I never really had a whole lot of friends and I've been bullied a lot. I just kinda felt alone. I guess if you think about it, there's a little bit of Charlie Brown in all of us. We get anxious and sometimes we mess up and just feel like giving up. We just need to keep moving forward and try to do better, I think.

There’s a problem with this video the problem is that most people like the later peanuts strips .Where the strips where very sweet but when you try to do something like Happiness is A warm blanket where the characters are truly acting like they did in the strip .Most people hated that special cause they thought the characters where to jerks but if you really look at the 1950s later strips to 60s the characters where jerks it was depressing .That’s what made it stand out it also did have its happy moments during those eras . The problem with the Peanuts movie is that they tried to jam way to many eras of the strip into one film .It leaves the viewers and future fans scattered .

Ive been a fan of Peanuts for years now. I find it radically different from everything from comics/cartoons from that same time. I think Charlie Brown was a way for Charles Schulz to adress his own depression and anxiety. Just like Daniel Tiger was for Fred Rogers. Imagine that the first ever Peanuts comic strip starts with a kid expressing his hatred towards Charlie Brown; that’s radical.

A very lovely and astute reading on Charlie Brown and the message for kids. Charles Schulz loved and respected kids and he made very conscious decisions as to how he would portray them and have them speak to the readers and audience. I have been lucky enough to have the Peanuts be a part of my life from an early age. First the cartoons and then the animated films. I have always enjoyed the humor, the kindness and the acknowledgement that it was okay to be a kid who felt a little different or out of step sometimes. The main message that I have personally taken from Charlie Brown is that he never gives up or becomes bitter. He remains "Good 'ol Charlie Brown."

Charlie was real. We all felt a bit bad for him, but later in life we really started to understand him a lot better. I think the ending of the Christmas show was intended as meaning (in a clunky way), feeling spiritually sick is why Charlie is depressed. His constant worrying, self doubt, self criticism, and self pity make him feel worse than he already does. By being less focused on himself and his less than ideal circumstances, he can actually feel better. It’s ok to feel things, but not so good to ruminate.

I've recently sort of rediscovered charlie brown, and as with most other things that I used to enjoy as a kid, I was afraid that it hadn't aged well to me. But, coming back to this series of films, I actually appreciate it more than I had in the past. As a brain dead pseudo-mature child growing up in the midst of the 2000s, I can recall liking the show for its music and its not over simplified, yet not overproduced animation (which the 2014 movie couldn't quite capture). These are things that I can still appreciate to this day. However I didn't really remember much of the shows actual dialogue/story, which is what I've come to love to death over the past couple of weeks. I found that the underlying depressive themes of the movie could really relate to my present self. This video was one of the reasons that I got back into it, and for that I am outstandingly thankful. Great series, great commentary, great video.

I have related to Charlie Brown ever since I was a young child myself. Even as young as elementary school age I had a diagnosis of clinical depression and Generalized and Social Anxiety Disorder, and I was also bullied by all the other kids because I'm autistic and therefore different from everyone else and I always felt like a failure of a human being, like I couldn't do anything right (I have also always been very clumsy so that didn't help either). The other kids always laughed at and mocked me when I did or said anything and I couldn't stand it so I stopped speaking for a while altogether and tried to keep out of the way of everyone else, even to the point of isolating my desk from the rest of the class (which the teachers didn't like but I couldn't stand being near the others). Even to this day I relate to Charlie Brown as I still constantly feel like a failure and that I can't do anything right. I'm still super clumsy, I'm still clinically depressed and anxious and I hate it so much. Even today as I write this comment I'm depressed, I'm still feeling the annual post-Christmas let-down where I feel completely drained of energy and don't want to do anything for a good few days except stay in my room, in bed, under the blankets. I have felt like this every year after Christmas since I was a kid, and I know that it's because I'm autistic and need time to process everything that happened during the holiday and also to gain back my energy because Christmas takes a lot out of me. It doesn't make it any easier though, especially since the depression always hits during this time and I don't know why but I hate it. So yeah, Charlie Brown is such a relatable character for me and he's one of my comfort characters since I see myself in him so much.

Minusing Chaz hearing Charlie saying No! in the July 2001 Rugrats in Paris movie's end scene. Or the monkeys hearing the babies in 1998s The Rugrats Movie and Donnie in crossover film from May 2003. And Elijia in The Thornberrys being also to talk to animals but to everyone else is just well animal calls. Heck even Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and other sit-com Christmas specials were inspired by Charlie Brown, Rudolph, and The Grinch. Charlie Brown is one of the ten, most impactful cartoons in history, ahead of its time during the 1960s. Its one of the first cartoons to depict bullying, friendship relationships, crushes, religion or politics, and depression/anxiety. The show and its Christmas/holiday specials are still played today, as a popular iconic for generations and more generations to come, with some morals against today's society like commercialism, or lessons about mental health and everyday realities for people. I feel like, mainly as seen in "A boy named Charlie Brown", has a really great message about depression and self-doubt. I'll attempt to put it in words: Despite the current situation, the people around you, and anything else happening in between, it's always okay to feel down, sad, angry, or anything negative. You don't constantly have to feel happy or win at everything, because even if you lose at something you've been trying to win for life and disappoint your peers and the people around you, no matter how bad the loss is, just look around you, look again at your peers, and does everyone still hate you? Is the world in complete ruin? And most importantly, just because you've lost once, or twice, or however many times, does that mean you're hopeless at everything for the rest of time?

As someone who has done Charlie Brown Christmas plays for many years (both acting and directing) I feel as though I may have an answer to your confusion as to why Shultz chose to use the Bible at the end of his Christmas special. During the earlier sections of the story, each character in one way or another is acting inherently greedy, be it snoopy stealing Linus's Blanket, Charlie Brown hounding for Christmas cards, Lucy seeking real Estate, Sally wanting just about everything, and everyone else wanting extravagant trees. Yet, in these pursuits, they did not only lose the spiritual meaning, but also the empathy that ought to come with the season. Everyone was wanting, rather than giving, all of course, except for Linus. He didn't seek a good Christmas tree, nor did he seek anything else, because he recognized the spirit of the season was not in pursuit of self, but rather in the spreading of love. When Charlie is at his breaking point, he finally calls out for some sort of explanation, and Linus provides it in the form of scripture, in which angels are GIVING good news to shepherds, people who in that era most certainly could not give anything back, even if they were peasants. It was not a statement of faith solving depression (which if you have read some stories of the prophets, who were considered God's most favored, they too were rarely at peace, but rather in constant turmoil), but rather that it is only the spread of goodwill that can help ease a soul. With that understanding being given to the children, they go to comfort Charlie Brown, who they had hurt in their pursuit of selfish interests. The comfort, again, was not spiritual, though they do sing hymns, rather it was comfort from people, people who came to help the downtrodden, much like what that gift that was given in the scripture was supposed to. TL;DR, The angels gave a gift, rather than getting it, and so when the kids gave the tree gifts, it's spirit was lifted, much like charlie browns was when they gave him some care.

I have a very similar experience with Charlie Brown in my life. I've always been a big fan, though everyone I know just cares about the merchandising and basically just calls everything related to Peanuts "Snoopy." I just thought Woodstock was cool, and it was nice to put up Peanuts decorations during Christmas. At about the age of 16, I started diving deeper into the psychology of the kids. The music, characters, and relationships became favorites to me. It really hit me that I was the "Charlie Brown" of my friend group in my first two years of college. I eventually had a falling out with them, but the point is that I still absolutely love Schulz' characters. The depth of just four panels in a comic strip can unpack so much emotion, even for an adult.

yeah, it's pretty amazing that such a cerebral series became a mainstream merchandising success. Thanks for watching!

Watching some sequences, I began remember my childhood, in some way I used or I am like Charlie Brown, but when I was a kid, specially in the sixth grade of elementary school, I used feel like an outcast, trying to do evrything the rest of kids did, like play football, deal with the school, but how ever I always never acomplish the goal as the rest of my clas mate, and many times my class mates or my neighborhood kids make a fun of me, some way I used to be like Charlie Brow, and i'm still like Charlie Brown, but in some way or how, my shelther is write poetry, my fary tales, and all things implicate to write something in a note book, is the way aI deal with that, as a full grown adult man in his forth decade.

I tried to force myself to be happy since I was 4 years old. When I feel like I have wronged everyone too much. And I always acted happy because I always thought that I could meet new people and I could start over. But time again and again, I only made life worse for myself and everyone around me. And eventually, my mind shut down and I went into a deep depression as I was getting older. I started staying away from the world. I have people that tell me all the time it's a cold world out here.

I've grown to hate almost every character except Charlie Brown. There are good eggs in the gang like Franklin, Pig-pen, Linus, Sally, and Marcie, but almost everyone is an absolute [CENSORED] to Charlie Brown for literally no reason. Have you heard some of the [CENSORED] Lucy says to him in "You're a good man, Charlie Brown"?

the whole point of charlie brown is to show that he is sad and has a problem with personality disorder but it also shows how his friends are there to bring him up, make him feel better. showing the friends you have can bring you up and that’s what they should be doing.

It's really weird. Just the other day I searched up some clip from Charlie Brown and went on bit of a watching spree. I ended up finding video after video of just, depressing, flat out SAD clips of Charlie Brown. From unrequited love to cancer. I haven't watched the show since I was a kid and it was really weird, and somewhat humbling, to see what the creator was really trying to convey. Thanks for the video.

I think you missed the mark with "All I needed was Jesus" bit. While yes, Linus recites Biblical verses related to the Christmas story, the emphasis is on the "peace on Earth, good will toward men." The everlasting idea of Christmas is to sew the seeds of peace, harmony, and compassion - not the commercialism which had consumed the holiday (even at that point of history).

I got introduced to Peanuts when I was 5 or 6, and I had amassive anniversary book . I re-read that book so many times that I memorized most of the comics in there. I truly think Peanuts is a massive part of my childhood, as it had shaped what kind of person I am and was.
