This is really interesting. Given your background in steelmaking, I'd be really interested to hear more technical details and opinions. Which technologies will work best, how does it work, and what will it do to steel quality?

Thank you, Daniel. I appreciate it. Great to know that more detail would be interesting to you. I'll keep that in mind when deciding on future content. It seems that many people are interested in content about heating and cooling, in particular heat pumps. So it may take a little bit of time. Thank you!

Happy holidays everyone! 🎊 Thank you very much for your support this year.🙏 You impressed us by sharing your thoughts and experiences on this channel helping other people to learn from you. It's been an amazing time with you! And I am very excited for next year! The holiday season puts most of us out of our regular schedules, which can lead to challenging situations. I hope that you have a good time with people you love and who love you! Take care, Katha 🌎🌏🌍 PS - We are 3 people short of 500 subscribers, which would enable community features. So, next year we'll most likely have the community thread. Thanks again and see you soon. 😀

Where does the input energy comes from? Wind , solar nuclear? I trust its not coal or gas fired ?

Good question. This video addresses the emissions from the chemical reaction of reducing iron ore to pig iron. It does not address electrification of the energy source to heat the furnace. This is a separate subject. Solutions exist, however, I'd be interested in an assessment of the economic viability of renewable energy-sourced new and existing steel plants as a function of location. Vielen Dank, @Heinrich Schultz. 🙏

It is an excellent initiative. We must encourage others to follow suit, in all branches of industry. I could be wrong (and correct me, please) but I believe that one of the biggest challenges will be obtaining energy through processes that are also 'green' throughout the entire life cycle. There is no point in generating electricity with wind turbines if manufacturing, use/maintenance and disposal (20 years later) of these turbines, are not equally 'green'.

Hi Daniel, Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I agree. Processes need to be net-zero throughout their life cycle in a sustainable future. Best wishes, Katharina

Hey kattha. I actually work with steel a lot as I'm part of the welding industry, I believe I know the basics of steel making and its properties. I know that you need carbon to make steel otherwise its just iron. Im not gonna pretend I understand the science behind it but Im scratching my head trying to understand "How does this make steel?". Where do they introduce the carbon to make this steel. This is a genuine question I have about this new "Green steel". Without the carbon this just sounds like a greener alternative to refining iron.
@NetZeroTech
@NetZeroTech Жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas, Great to hear that you work with stell in the welding industry. The world needs people like you. Hydrogen can act as the reducing agent replacing carbon to produce fossil-free steel. Simplified, the chemical reaction to produce iron in traditional steel making is Fe2O3 + C = Fe + CO2. Using hydrogen as the reducing agent, the chemical reaction to produce iron from iron ore is Fe2O3 + 3H2 → 2Fe + 3H2O. Thanks for watching!
@ashwatson2142
@ashwatson2142 Жыл бұрын
Really they're talking about production of iron from iron ore, which traditionally "burns" carbon to pull oxygen out of iron ore. To get steel a certain amount of carbon needs to be added into the iron, not burned.
@NetZeroTech
@NetZeroTech Жыл бұрын
@@ashwatson2142 Correct, one requirement to produce steel is to remove the oxygen, which - like you mentioned - can be done with carbon or hydrogen as the reducing agent. And also correct, regulating the carbon content is a separate requirement. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. 🙂

When you say economical at 4 cents kWh , do you mean onsite production of green hydrogen? Also how do we know it’ll be more economic to go down the path of distributed hydrogen production vs centralized? If so what’s the cost per kg, and what’s the carrier? Ammonia, liquid or gas?
@NetZeroTech
@NetZeroTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hello P A, Thank you for your comment. Really interesting questions. I don't think the source mentioned, where the hydrogen would be produced. On site is economically most viable in most cases. In particular for retrofits, practical considerations such as the sheer availability of space can play a role. I think central and distributed hydrogen can be complementary business models, since economic viability for central depends is a function of distance amongst other factors. Ammonia is the most promising energy carrier in most cases, except for immediate utilization of hydrogen. For short-term volatility onsite, hydrogen is the most suitable buffer.

Carbon Negative Hydrogen can be produced from Algae, by two methods, 1 shown in vid (link below), or by using the (Captured atmospheric carbon) algae biomass. To make BioGas that can be used to both make the Steam and to extract the Hydrogen from, at scale in current Steam Reformation plants! Photo Bio Reactors(PBR) used to grow Algae are cheap, easy and quick to build, and cos they are a closed loop system they can be placed almost anywhere, on sides & roofs of buildings etc. also the CO2 given off from the Steam Reformation is fed back into the PBR to produce more Algae/BioGas kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqPPmnl_iLCWea8

Hello Sunrise sunset, I am not sure what happened to your comments. I couldn't find them in the section "held for review". The KZbin algorithm checks if comments are in alignment with community guidelines and sometimes redflags comments or users. If you have scientific sources about the costs that would be great. You would probably agree that the survival of our own species and biodiversity is worth working towards, right? If so, I'd be curious about your thoughts on how to achieve that. Thank you, Katha

A few problems with DHRI. First there will not be enough hydrogen to reduce 875000 tonnes of Iron concentrates, which is the quantity of concentrates presently Imported to the UK. 50KWhrs are presently required to produce 1Kg of H2. It would require 16.7 TeraWatthr to produce 7.9 Million tonnes of steel. Of course if we build X numbers of wind turbines at 175 tonnes of steel, the UK will need a further 1 million tonnes, at least. DHRI is considerably more expensive than coke reduced by 33%. Sponge iron is pyrophoric. I remember 11 men killed when a few litres of water ran from a ruptured tuyere into a torpedo ladle. It got trapped under the molten iron, dissociated and exploded. Next morning arriving at work, I found a piece of steel double the size of my car in my parking space. The required storage on site of several hundred tonnes of H2 (almost certainly tier 2) and several hundred tonnes of pyrophoric iron is a recipe for disaster

I agree,. Including the supply chain is critical for a holistic transition to climate neutrality. In my experience, transitions are successful, when broken down in actionable steps. Mining companies are joining forces to decarbonize heavy industries: "Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. has agreed to buy Williams Advanced Engineering Ltd., which was founded by the Williams Formula 1 racing team, for $223 million to gain access to battery technology that it will use in mining haulage trucks." Hi Gart, Thank you for reaching out. Interesting. More details would be appreciated. I think the key factor is the climate. So it would be good to know where you are located. Other factors are ground availability (for horizontal loops), equipment, and budget (see comment on air-source vs. ground-source heat pumps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKeaqZ6FmNqXa9k&lc=UgwsemqO_zYUxUehAyF4AaABAg) Have a great week, Katha

I think you should move away from the term “fossil fuel”. A term used to propagandize finite supplies of crude. That doesn’t originate from fossils. But highly compressed and composted organic material. The pitch would garner much more credibility if such manipulative terms as “green” and “fossil fuels” were not used.

Thank you very much for watching and leaving a comment. I think it is a trade-off between broader audience applicability and credibility to experts. Let me exaggerate to get the point across: If I make it credible to the 1-5% of experts in the field, I have zero to none late majority viewers on the bell curve of adoption. Hope that makes sense? Thank you, Katharina
