You should make a video of collecting plastic garbage waste from water sources like rivers, ponds, or beaches or something. From there turn that into Plastoline and post that video showing how we could collect the waste from the oceans and turn that into something useful. I'd love to even help do this too!

You need to start washing with acetone. It's usually $20-40 per gal, depending on how much you buy. You just use a 3ml disposable dropper to slowly drip it in, collect all the dirty acetone to redistill, and collect the crude back out of it. You can remove excess acetone from the recovered crude by pulling a vacuum and warming to about 30-40°C for a few hours. Scrubbing doesn't remove it, just contaminates brushes. After rinsinf all the visible contamination out, i scrub it with a mixture of 100mL ethanol in 200mL water and 200mL lavender soap to thoroughly clean. Also, steel keck clips are a thing. I keep a bag of each type depending on what temps i work with. You should spend $30 on a 200mm vigreux collumn. Any bigger gets annoying to work with, but theyre better than packed collumns and dont plug as easily. I have 3 with one being 150mm so i can combine for higher purity. It also helps to wrap the collumn in foil to retain heat and slowly ramp up the temperature based on collection rate of no more than 1 drop/sec.

The more length and surface area your column has, the more "levels" there are that allow more efficient separation of fractions. This still won't separate azeotropes that water forms with gasoline however. You can entrain the water with ethanol and get a more reliable distillation of the gasoline products you are looking for. And the water should boil off at a lower temperature first, along with the ethanol
@ezcreations777
@ezcreations777 24 күн бұрын
I should also add, this isn't to say use a massively tall column out the gate. The goal is to establish a heat gradient that allows plenty of length for other crap to reflux before spilling over into the condenser. So it's a balance of maximizing this surface area and length and insulation on your column.

I've been pondering a few days, I think I got an idea for chopping plastic: you could set an auger on a cradle that sets it's point into the processing bin. Then in the bin; little tine blades. As the auger brings plastic up as A screw lift of sorts the tines will catch and cut the plastic. Ripping it to bits as it spits plastic out the top of the bin...

The longer the distillation column and the more amount of packing material that you use, the more theoretical plates you introduce and the more pure your distillate will be. The theoretical plates in the column should condense the majority of the vapors, allowing only the vapors with the lowest boiling point through. Steel wool is a good packing to use, but based on the experiments I have seen up at Michigan Tech, glass beads generally offer more plates per a given volume. Glass beads are also much more consistent since you are not having to pack them in. With steel wool, if you do not pack tightly enough, you end up with very few theoretical plates. But, if you pack it too tightly, you end up plugging the distillation column or really dragging out the distillation time. But, long story short, YES, a taller packing column is necessary as it will provide a purer distillate. If you use a very short column, you are essentially just doing a simple distillation which will only separate liquids with significant gap in boiling points. I went over this unit in the Organic Chemistry lab several weeks back. We were separating ethyl and butyl acetate with fractional distillation and had to learn the how and the why of the system.

At my place we use Solvent K (kerosene?) to clean sludge out. Its really efficient at doing it. Just a nice weight to not dry out like gasoline does, but its light enough to just dissolve muck like magic. And once cleaned, the kerosene dries out easily. You can use soap after to clean those lab equipment even more. And since you have a distiller I think you can keep regenerating that solvent too and leave behind the muck to send to someone else who can dispose it more properly.

Both fuels fractions looked a bit heavy just on color, the naphtha should be colorless and the diesel should be yellow to green. Plus the diesel shouldn’t plug at that condenser temperature, but gas oil range material might, depending on the actual temperature. Definitely more susceptible to that kind of carryover when you remove the packing, but with the column design you’re using, the packing efficiency is likely low (too narrow of a column and potentially too tall). For some safety and reliability, it might be worth making a copper still instead of glass so that you don’t have to rely on the plastic clips. Very cool project going here, excited to see what’s next!

you need to create a greater contact area for your heating mantle and flask while distilling to reach high enough temperatures for reliably to fractionate diesel and also I'd suggest using smaller anti bumping granules as only the rough edges of the glass shards act as efficient nucleation points and larger fragments have more smooth surface to total surface area ratio.

The cost of electricity to produce a barrel of oil from pyrolysis is approximately $80 when utilizing microwave or other resistance-based heat sources. For this process to become economically viable, it is important to reduce the required heat input by pulling and maintaining a vacuum, as well as using heat transfer fluids like ammonia or carbon dioxide instead of traditional resistance-based heating. However, even with these adjustments, the oil produced will not meet standards for refining and will not be suitable for processing in plants optimized for heavy or light crude oil. To enhance the economic viability of the process, maybe you could convert the oil to hydrogen. You would need to incorporate steam and a nickel-based catalyst. This approach leads to the production of hydrogen gas, carbon soot, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Achieving this requires temperatures exceeding 600°C. While it is theoretically possible to reduce the required temperature for steam pyrolysis by maintaining a vacuum, this presents significant challenges. It involves complex calculations and precise measurements to calibrate the system for efficiency, along with the necessity of specialized components. Best of luck
@tpzoso
@tpzoso 19 күн бұрын
Just saw that you are already using vacuum. Nice 👍 . With a vacuum, you can achieve effective pyrolysis at around 600°C instead of needing 800°C. By utilizing a more efficient heat source, such as an industrial heat pump, you could significantly reduce the energy required to heat the reactor to 300°C. It's estimated that this method would consume less than one-third of the energy compared to a microwave for reaching that temperature. While microwaves may still be effective for achieving temperatures up to 600°C, overall, you could potentially save around 30% of the energy, based on observations of the reactor's performance. Another significant concern is the release of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other corrosive compounds. Implementing a catalytic process will be essential to effectively remove these harmful byproducts from the final output. Ultimately, producing hydrogen (H₂) seems to be the most promising approach. The gas exiting the reactor is already at a high temperature, requiring minimal additional energy for conversion. Additionally, this process could be integrated as a solution to manage NOx and corrosive compounds, enhancing the overall efficiency and environmental performance of the system.

It’s very important that you reach a positive Q-value, or this is meaningless. I’d recommend getting a glassblower to make you a Vigreux fractional distillation column with as many ports as possible; they need to be angled at a very slight angle upwards. The distillation vessel should be a stainless steel vessel instead of glass, submerging it in a high-temperature fluid to give you greater temperature control. Also, I’d recommend taking the fluid intermittently, but almost directly, from the collection pot in the magnetron machine to the distillation pot to minimize heat loss and lower your total energy input. Also, recommend insulating everything as much as humanly possible.

Watching how fast your auger pulled in the plastics just as you were loading made me think you probably have some uncooked plastics on both ends. I would put a small amount in and then time how long it takes for the first bits of it to reach the other end. Especially since this is a new auger. Once the plastic hits the end you can no longer move it back the other way so I'd take like 30 seconds to a minute off that time and then see if you can set up your computer to continually run and switch directions to keep it moving. Then you probably would only need like the 3 or 4 center microwaves running.
