Air On The Water

Air On The Water

This video shows the concept of portable kayaking, and how discovering new places can be done flexibly both with inflatable, folding or hardshell kayaks. Discussed and recorded as I was paddling near one of three cities on the same day!

Thank you so much for this video! I found it very helpful and illuminating. I share your value of portable kayaks for the same reasons. Hearing your perspective has been validating that I am not alone. I quite agree that the trade-off of paddling slower compared to a hard shell is inconsequential when your interest is in exploring, not distance. The portability allows for far more flexibility in exploring than a hard shell can offer.

@@DrBetterTreatment Glad you enjoyed the video and we're in agreement! The degree of trade-off also depends on the inflatable; with my fastest inflatable, the Itiwit X500, I have done countless trips paddling at the same pace as others in sea kayaks - the trade-off there is more that I need to put in more energy than other paddlers, but not unreasonably much. With my slower inflatables though, I often also find the exploration freedom far superior to the option of paddling more quickly, but having to paddle back and perhaps/likely seeing less in the end.

Agree, there are a lot of benefits with inflatable kayaks but there are also benefits with hard kayaks. So far I only have inflatable but maybe some day I have both and can choose what is best for that day.

@@danerik.westerlind Yes, each have their advantages and ways of using them. When it comes to portability, they can be used differently, of course, just like an inflatable SUP can be transported on one's back in a way that a hard SUP can't.

Having an inflatable kayak meant I could take it to Scotland on the ferry earlier this year. Hope to go to a remote part of Ireland next month. Last time I went the roads were too bad for a trailer or roof bars, but there will be no problem with the inflatable inside the car.

@@davidpoots8362 Nice! Yes, you've done some cool travel also. The ferry option is one of the things I enjoy most (although with some ferries here that's possible with a sea kayak also, sometimes at extra cost). With my lightest mini-kayak, the Advanced Elements Packlite at 1.8 kg, I once spent half a day walking around another city exploring with it before putting it in the water 😎

How fortunate you are to live in a city with such great transportation options. Here in San Diego CA/Southern California there are no other options than driving in a car to get to a launch. We don't have buses, trains or subway systems to accommodate transporting portable kayaks. That water looked pretty yucky but, that CASTLE and windmill! 🏰
@AirOnTheWater
@AirOnTheWater 16 күн бұрын
@@karenlegotte417 Yes, that's fairly common in European larger cities, making exploration with a portable kayak quite feasible. I've used this to my advantage in, for example, Helsinki, Finland, as well, paddling westwards all day to go back by metro instead of paddling half the distance in that direction and having to circle back. The castle was quite nice and the windmill a nice conclusion to the day!

Fantastic story and information Patrik. Not a great option for over here because the prices of public travel is crazy so much cheaper to drive. For instance, you know I mentioned going to York, well I looked into going on the train as parking is a nightmare there, and even though it's only 45 minutes by car it would cost me about £90 for a return ticket.

@@THE-RIVER-RAT Thank you George. Wow - that sounds unfortunate and indeed like surprisingly high prices. Over here, the price varies a lot on the time of day though and if you book far in advance you can get much better rates. We're often not happy here about issues and delays with public transport (this month as previous years in summer commuter trains are not working for 5 weeks in this area due to construction works), but overall I suppose comparative it is quite cheap (you can get a one month subscription to full public transport in Stockholm county within a perhaps 150 km range - buses, trains, metro, trams, many local ferries - for the price of that return ticket you mentioned). Hope it works out with York.

@@AirOnTheWater Cheers, I should say if you book in advance like you said it's cheaper but unfortunately over here that's impossible because of the bloody weather lol
@AirOnTheWater
@AirOnTheWater 16 күн бұрын
@@THE-RIVER-RAT You're right - that is a limiting factor, the unpredictability of weather ahead of time. Don't know if there are flexible rates there also where you can reschedule if needed, but here then that's more expensive to start with and you still might end up paying even higher rates.
