The 2022 reg cars are more than 50kg heavier than the 2020 ones. That‘s atleast 1.5 seconds a lap on a track like Bahrain. It‘s extremely impressive that the RB20 is as close as it is given the fact that these cars weight so much more and don‘t have things like the party mode anymore and a higher % of sustainable fuel which also reduced the power of the PU‘s in general.

Dont forget the weight has gone up +50kg since 2020. The tyres and wheel rims are different. They have to use a biofuel mix now too. And also the regulations to outwash the tyre wake have changed. So, while the RB20 is probably behind when compared directly to the W11, I don't think it was as dominant. It was a shorter season due to covid but Max still won 2 races that year, Perez won one, as well as Gasly winning one. So win percentage was lower than RB19 for example. In Abu Dhabi max won by 15seconds. In the 2020 Bahrain GP, where this merc lap is taken from, Max finished 1.5sec behind Lewis, and got fastest lap.

The new cars might catch the old ones in terms of average lap speed, but they don't seem very racy to me for some reason. If you look at the W11 and how fast it goes in and out of a corner it looks better imo, it feels exciting to watch it. Not sure if this is the added weight of the cars or something else, but the difference is very obvious.
@e2rqey7 ай бұрын
I'd be shocked if they ever do under these regulations. It's not just the weight. That's not even the primary factor. It's the consistency of the downforce, and the quality of the suspension. That's why the W11 just looks absolutely on rails and even the RB20 doesn't come close. Downforce produced by overbody aero is much more consistent, progressive and predicable than ground-effect aero. Since the downforce produced doesn't rely on a stable ride height anywhere near as much. Meaning the amoutn of downforce produced is almost completely dependent on just the speed that the car is going. So drivers can be much more confident about how much grip they have. Also the old regs allowed for much much much more complex suspension. So they could control how they handled/chassis dynamics with way more precision. And since the aero didn't depend on keeping the underfloor within such a small ride height window, they could have the suspension be far more compliant and not be forced to keep it extremely stiff the way that the ground effect cars have to be run. Much better suspension, more consistent down-force, more down-force, and the old regs also had bigger wider tires with smaller rims and a more rubber. So even the tires themselves were better suited. The difference in the size of the tires is so large you can see the difference just by comparing them in the video. It's also worth mentioning that those cars were developed before the cost cap era as well. So you had teams spending literally like 5-6X what's currently spent per season to develop and run these cars. Under the old regs the cars themselves were far more expensive, and had more people working on/developing them. And that's all in addition to a set of regs that allowed them to create much faster, better F1 cars. The technological progress and institutional learning since 2020 cannot make up for all of those other factors.

RB's engine is, if they are lucky, maybe close to being equal to Merc's Power unit in the W11. It almost certainly hasn't surpassed it. The Mercedes power unit isn't just insanely performant. It's also one of the most fuel efficient engines ever made. I don't think RB has matched the Merc power unit across all metrics (performance, reliability, efficiency)
@JotaV25027 ай бұрын
Nah bro they're using a new fuel since 2022 that nerfed the engines by 30hp and in 2020 they had party mode and engine mode, RB20 must have the same power of W11 given the engine and mode nerfs. Also, the engine are freeze since 2022, so no 4 years of development there, only 2. 2024 engine is the same from 2022 engine, literally the same

its also cool how you can tell the diffrent driving styles of max and lewis, max upshifted to gear 8 and lewis could as he reached the shift rpm before max but didnt, max chose to upshift most likely to get more engine braking and generate more entry oversteer

All things aside its actually speaks millions to the fact that the rb holds up this good with worse conditions already, and could keep up with the w11 in a small part of the track too. And you can throw away your football style stupid mindset out the window this perfomance speaks to the team that made the rb and Max for bringing out that perfomance. Also you could make this comparisons with the w11 every same track they race on, would be interesting to see the differences, hopefully we get other cars taking pole giving us a chance of comparing them with the w11 not just the rb.
@DonLee19807 ай бұрын
track conditions and tires definitely play a role here, as well as weight. Funny is the average qualifying pace was FASTER than 2021's Q3 lap times. That is mighty impressive of what they have done to claw back performance despite the weight penalty.

I'm not a Mercedes fan but that car looked so good to drive, and in my favorite livery, plus I think this was the car we could actually watch Hamilton driving skills, imo he was way more sharp and aggressive in his style and the car just complies.

RB19 was dominant and RB20 seems to continue that trend. But seeing the W11 heads up comparison just reminds me of how gleeful it was to watch the W11 turn in on corners flat out and not even have to lift. That car was a sight to behold.

1:17 4 wheels over track limits...but the time record is valid..is it because Mercedes is close to the FIA...and DAS (active suspension) was banned after only one season

Do you believe this better time lap is related to tire size also? New 18in tire "has less rubber" then the old 13in. Maybe this explains better curve performance of W11 against RB20.

In 2020, the weight of an F1 car was 746 kilograms. In 2024, the weight of an F1 car is 798. Also, during qualifying, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes F1 also had "party mode" available to them. In 2024, Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing don't have "party mode" available to them. 13- inch wheels also have less inertia, so Lewis Hamilton's is able to accelerate a lot faster when you compare it to Max Verstappen's 18 -inch wheels. James Allison predicted that the new 18-inch wheels would make the new regulations for 2022 2 seconds slower. What's you're really doing is comparing apples and oranges.

@mattndallastx4586 ай бұрын
@nocontent1676 When did speaking facts become "crying"? Max Verstappen's car was heavier than Lewis Hamilton's car. Lewis Hamilton's car had more horsepower because when his engine was in "party mode" during qualifying, it gave him an additional 20/30 extra horsepower. An 18-inch wheel has more inertia than a 13-inch wheel. It contributes to slower acceleration and increases the braking distance. Maybe you should have paid more attention to your physics professors in college. Wait! Did you even graduate college?

So... Comparing two things when track conditions aren't the same and rules, probably, have changed too? Can we conclude anything then? Because, you know, it's been 4 years and I'm pretty sure cars get FASTER by the year (given the same rules and conditions), not slower... If W11 was THIS good Mercedes would simply bring it back to race this year, no?
