What is Regenerative Braking? How does Regenerative breaking work? In this short video, I hope to explain how regen braking works and make it simple. Regenerative braking simplified essentials as it were.

Most people already know what regenerative braking is. We just needed to know how it actually recharges the battery. I really thought it would be explained.

EV's use Permanent Magnet Synchronous AC Motors. The concept of regenerative braking with these is actually extremely complex. A lot actually goes into the mechanics of regenerative braking with them. Due to the air gap flux being uncontrollable in them, the output voltage is directly related to the RPM of the rotor. To start, the motor controller changes the angle of difference between the stator field and rotor field. The closer to a 90 degree angle between the two fields, the more current is produced as well as rotational resistance. This would be what specifically controls the amount of force the regenerative braking system is applying to the vehicle. As said earlier, in these types of motors the RPM of the rotor dictates the voltage output of the motor during generation. The Inverter needs to be able to receive this voltage and regulate it back into the battery packs DC voltage. This means that if the battery is 400v, the motor is producing 750v @ 20a, the Inverter needs to do two things. First, it will step the AC voltage down from 750v to roughly 400v, meaning due to ohms law the amperage will be increased to 37.5a, then the inverter will regulate the 400v 37.5a AC into DC, which the battery can then accept.

I found your video educational. As a side note; remove your glasses, move light, or solve reflection problem somehow.

but how do you increase "friction"? I don't want my motor to always slow me down when not accelerating. aka how do I transition from accelerating to free spin?

My question was, how do the "levels" of regenerative braking work, e.g. on Hondas where you can increase the regen and braking power with "shifter" paddles on the steering wheel. I think I figured it out, just thinking it through: the motor is still providing power when you take your foot off the gas or start braking, and with no input the inverter will reduce that power in a smooth, shallow curve. When you "downshift," you're asking the inverter to cut that power in steeper steps, increasing both the workload on the wheels to power the system and the net gain from the motor getting spun on its shaft.

I discovered back in the summer my hybrid wasnt changed enough to allow the Air Conditioning to work.I taken up with the dealer before hand said i had either run the car more on longer journeys or had to buy a smart charger.Thankfully i never own a lead battery charger.Never need to.Or borrow someone charger .

Can regenerative breaks be the only breaks or is it necessary to have break pads aswell

Regenerative braking can be used as the only braking system in normal stop and go traffic, but the issue is that regenerative braking currently doesn’t have the ability to quickly slow down fast enough to evade some emergencies and potentially crashes. This is why all EVs and Hybrids still include standard brakes, however this could change with improvements to the current technology.

I do. To put it simply the motor reverse’s it’s self creating a dynamo which generates electricity which charges the positive ions in the battery

@@EdenMotorGroup But at which moment does the motor reverse itself? why doesn't it brake anything when changing direction at high speeds? Does it uncouple itself from the drivetrain at the moment of recharging?
@moarsaur
@moarsaur 2 ай бұрын
@@profdmiranda The motor doesn't change the direction of spin. The wheels, and all the gears between them and the motor, and the shaft running through the middle of the motor are all still turning in the same direction. What changes is that the motor is no longer receiving power from the battery to turn that shaft (or at least, it's not contributing as much). Instead, the momentum of the vehicle is turning the wheels on the road, so the wheels are now the generators in the system, turning the gears that spin the shaft that rotates the motor, which produces electricity from spinning.

So you're saying the regen brake system works great for braking however it's poor at generating power to charge the battery. I'm guessing the only difference is the configuration of the coils on the armature that makes it different from a vehicle alternator (or generator if we're talking a really old car because the rectifier was a separate part).
