Yeah im tired of people trying to argue which one is better, you dont have to tear one down just to build a pedestal for the other, RE4R has alot of depth to combat, and the action is very frenetic and seamless, thanks to things like real time weapon swapping and stealth mechanics but Re4O has a very simple and consistent combat loop, its very streamlined and polished, the enemies behave pretty predictably which gives the player a large amount of control over the battlefield But both have problems RE4R's story doesnt have the campy charm the original had, but it still has an honest heart, and for every character the remake failed, like Ada, theres one that triumphs over the original, Like Louis.

RE4R is a perfect balance of respect to source material and adding fresh touch here and there. Sure, there are still some jank here and there (like very spongy enemies on higher difficulties), but all in all - almost perfect. It is also worth noticing that on release game worked super smooth - no major glitches or bugs, issues with optimization. In the era of half baked releases it's a pretty nice thing.

The remake was a lot of fun. A very different experience from the original but certainly not a replacement. I recently replayed the original, and it does take some getting used to after playing the more modern version, but once you do its just as engaging. The limited movement just meant you had to stand your ground and instead of running away from the hordes, sometimes you have to go through. You had to be mindful of keeping you guns loaded, in case you had an enemy run up on you and you needed to switch to the shotgun right away. Or, since enemies were guaranteed to react to your bullets, just get a head shot and melee them to create an opening. I will say this for the remake though, I think I liked the boss fights more. Some of them at least, like Mendez and El Gigante. It seems like a lot of bosses in older RE games were just "stay out of range of their massive claws while occasionally turning to shoot them until their health runs out." It was hard to avoid their attacks, and in some cases felt impossible. This was also an issue in the recent RE 2 Remake, so maybe its just because all the bosses in RE 4 remake have some kind of projectile attack that's telegraphed more clearly, idk. Sadly though their personalities are a bit diluted, because they all just talk/act like crazy cultists. It also sucks that you don't see their transformations like in the original, and I am starting to get sick of this trend where everything now has an eyeball weak spot. I know saddler had them but Mendez and Salazar didn't, and i don't see why they were needed.
@krakenmckraken91288 ай бұрын
Yea, I’m in the og is objectively better camp. Primarily due to the mechanics being tighter. No random bullet deviation, confirmed staggers, lasers across all weapons, etc. The other being the diluted villiains imo but that’s balanced a bit by Ashley being a straight up grade in personality and Luis getting more screen time. The boss fights are absolutely an improvement because they feel more interactive. Verdugo and krauser are peaks of the remake for me.

Honestly that's not a very good argument. The complaints about it make sense. Why bother having that puzzle-like inventory system if they're just going give the ability to ignore it at the push of a button? In that case why not just put in the regular list system that the other RE games have instead? Having that option to skip it takes away from any value it had. Imagine another scenario where a game implements a system that makes the game a little more challenging and overall adds a small, but unique aspect to the game. But then they also add a way to completely skip it. I'm sure you can understand how people would say that makes no sense. In the end use whichever way you want, but the complaints against it are valid.

RE4 remake appeals to modern gamers. You can see how it's influenced by RE4 original(obviously), dodge/parry system from Fromsoftware, crafting/assassination in the last of us. RE4 original was just... dam. It was the influencer. Dead Space, Gears of War, God of War 2018 (the over the shoulder camera gave me memories of RE4 original when I played it). I beat the remake twice and completed the mercenaries highest rank with all the characters. Initially I was super excited for the remake, but my joy dwindled throughout the game as I saw many changes to a lot of characters I loved, Luis and Salazar especially. I prefer the original, but I can see why more modern gamers would like the remake. I am just tired of hearing remake fans shit on the originals. It was nice being an RE fan and talking about the games/characters with other RE fans. Now Im always listening to people talk about which one is better the remake or the og. It kind of split the fan base. I think we all should appreciate the craft of both. We dont get the remakes without the originals being masterpieces in their era. Like or dislike whatever game but we don't need to convert others to liking what we like. Let that be their own decision.

Both games are incredible, and I love the way they did the story and characters in Remake. Krasuer took a little getting used to, and I still think it makes more sense for him to have been using Wesker as a source for being familiar with Los Illuminados at all, but this this still a good depiction of him. Having him kill Luis and have more of a connection with Leon (without the use of a side game like Darkside Cronicles) made sense. Mendez had a lot more to say this time, which is good, and even the Right Hand's more fleshed out through his notes and cutscenes, feeling like a silent but proper villain this time. Saddler and Salazar are the only villains I feel could have been improved. I like how spooky and almost otherworldly Saddler is here, especially in the scenes when he's speaking to Leon through the plaga, but once you see him in the flesh, I begin to miss his silly Dracula-esque portrayal from the original game. He was one of the most overconfident villains in the series, even finding Leon's insults and damage to his cult to be amusing. The way he got riddled with bullets and just smiled it off in the original is far cooler than how that scene was done in Remake. For the original Saddler, maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of have the impression that he didn't truly believe in the Los Illuminados religion and was simply playing the part of their cult leader to feel empowered, hence his ego. Worshipping an ancient alien/bug is BS and he knows it. In Remake, he's absolutely a zealot by comparison, buying into the whole alien/bug belief as a gift from God. Salazar is close. He's still this prissy, flamboyant, man-child who thinks he's way bigger than he actually is, but they were much more subtle about it this time. His tantrums and lack of control are mostly absent throughout Remake, which is unfortunate. He only really acts like his old self when you fight him, which is the last time he even appears in the story. We also had a missed opportunity for him to interact with Krauser, as they never actually met in the original, but I can't really imagine what they would say aside from Krauser not taking him seriously or whatever. Salazar's frustration with Leon is still amusing in Remake, though.

I love both games, but I think the original has a more satisfying gunplay due to the weapons feeling more powerful + consistent enemy feedback + laser sight for all weapons + more precise aiming. Furthermore, even with tank controls, Leon in the original was more comfortable to control due to how snappy and responsive he was, in the remake he feels heavy and clumsy to control due to the “realistic” movement animations. Playing both games on professional difficulty made me appreciate the original more. The remake improved some aspects but it also created problems that didn’t exist in the original. On higher difficulties, the staggering is random and a lot of times it takes forever to stagger an enemy. Some would argue that it makes the game more challenging and unpredictable, but I would argue that it makes the game dull and annoying. There’s also a higher chance to get stun-locked in the remake (in the original, it was rare to get stun-locked except for a very few boss attacks). Lack of invincibility frames, weapon sway + bloom, inconsistent staggering and enemies being bullet sponges, enemies trying to grab you every two seconds, combined with Leon’s clumsy movement and him getting staggered by anything just makes the game not fun to play on higher difficulties IMO. A KZbinr by the name of “Djisso” did a good job highlighting these issues. I also think Ashley’s Ai was better in the original because you can tell her to wait in a spot and she sticks to your back like a glue. Her character was better in the remake, but her Ai was worse. The only characters that I thought were improved were Ashley and Luis, every other character was a downgrade (especially Saddler and Salazar). Saddler and Salazar were never the most “deep” villains (I mean, it’s an RE game afterall) but at least they were entertaining in the original because of their back and forth banter with Leon. In the remake, they don’t have that much interaction with Leon. Then there’s the other stuff like the art direction, sound design, cutscenes, voice acting of some of the characters, etc. I mostly prefer the original when it comes to these aspects. The remake is good but it’s not really a direct improvement nor does it replace the original. Both games are good for different reasons. Call me crazy, but I think RE4’s more “arcadey” gameplay will stand the test of time much better than the remake’s gameplay.

Your criticisms are extremely vague and lack substantive examples of anything about mechanics, gameplay, atmospheres, exploration, etc. There are plenty of areas where the remake did the complete opposite of “watering down” and added a lot of depth and new mechanics that make the overall gameplay loop even better than the original. Something as minuscule as the HUD (I prefer the simplicity; it stays out of the way) doesn’t seem like something I would give equal weight to something like the new parry system or greatly expanded Separate Ways, for example. I’ve noticed that a lot of fans use terms like stylish, iconic, soulful vs soulless, etc. They often talk in abstractions without giving specific examples, or they give insanely disproportionate weight to specific lines of dialogue or one-liners over something that actually affects the lore, overall narrative, combat system, etc. There are tons of new one-liners anyway, so I don’t get why it’s such a big deal. I’d much rather have the new scenes and dialogue with Luis and Ashley. The RE4 remake is absolutely phenomenal, and in my opinion surpasses the original (I’ve played both versions countless times). The release of Separate Ways confirms this for me. The remake straddles the line between faithful recreation and a fresh, innovative take on the original game. It was an impossible task to win everyone over, especially because so many fans are excessively blinded by nostalgia or even a purist mentality. The remake introduces a plethora of new features and content, such as: Expanded shooting range, attaché case charms, side quests, expanded treasure hunting and treasure combining system, new mini bosses such as the Savage Mutt and Merciless Knight, new brute enemy type and its variants, new weapons and knives, a very gratifying parry system, stealth mechanics, mew and improved gore/ dismemberment system, enhanced enemy AI, expanded backtracking, new areas (lake, sanctuary, cave systems, Mendez attic, ritual altar, expanded Hunter’s lodge), a HUGELY improved Ashley section that can also now be explored by Leon, new puzzles, much more screen time and character development for Luis, better characterization for Ashley, new lore, etc. Separate Ways is also greatly improved. The grappling hook is given a more prominent role in combat (especially when using the Ada charm), entirely new areas, new laser room boss (which also ties in with other RE games), new weapons, case charms, expanded stealth mechanics, more Luis character development, more screen time for Wesker, Black Robe encounters (which build on the psychological aspects of RE4 beta versions), and more. Almost all of the integral areas removed from Leon’s campaign make a return in Ada’s campaign, plus completely new content. Another thing I should mention is that many of these new features and mechanics increase the level of player decision making and inventory management, which is integral to a survival horror game. This adds to replay value and gives the player more options to approach each scenario in their own way. I’ve revisited the original recently after playing through the remake numerous times, and I genuinely struggle to find substantive things I like better about the original (especially after the release of SW). I don’t particularly miss the lava room and QTE segments when considering the aforementioned improvements and additions. Both versions are great, and of course the original is more influential and important, but I seriously don’t understand why some people shit on the remake just for the sin of not being the original, or daring to exist. For me, the original is a 9.5/10, but the remake is absolutely a 10/10.

I was part of that crowd that was not pleased with the action-oriented direction It was taking the franchise. But this game manages to be a bit more believable in plot and events, if only because it's taking itself a little bit more seriously while still maintaining a bit of that over the top action movie feel. But I also really like that they actually added in some horror. There's not a ton of it but there's a few segments that were actually really damn creepy, the first part with the garador down in the basement all chained up, Ashley's segment with the knights, and then the regenerators are way creepier than they were in the original. Otherwise I always felt like that original game had a horror backdrop and nothing else to it otherwise it was still balls to the wall cheesy action I prefer just the plot line and setting and enemies of the original trilogy to this day, but this remake really surprised me and managed to put it enjoyment high up there for me as far as the franchise goes.

See unlike alot of people I played the original re4 twice before the remake and I'm of the opposite mindset the og is fun, but not really scary, mechanics are stiff and so is the camera, having to pause the game to switch weapons takes me out of the immersion, Leon is funny but makes the villains look like complete jokes, quick time events are unnecessary, so while good I definitely prefer many things in the remake but it's still a good game tho

While I don't hate the yellow paint on interactable/destroyable objects, I do dislike it in this case. In other games I don't mind it, but in Resident Evil 4 it ruins the dark and gritty look the game is going for. I played the game with a mod that replaces the yellow paint with a small Los Illuminados logo, which I find more aesthetically pleasing while also making more sense in-universe. I think games should find other ways of telling the player what they can interact with or have an option to turn helping colors off.

about the yellow paint, i think it is some kind of a bitter pillow we have to swallow to cure our headache. more than yellow paint i hate those games where i have to border on every scenery limit looking for a grab or interact icon to show up (i'm playing RE4 Ultimate HD these days and the instances where i picked something i didn't see after the icon appeared are countless, but in that game it's more the fault of the camera than items blending with the environment), i also hate when there is a grab/climb mechanic and i end up jumping against walls, cliffs, etc checking if i can hung onto something, or worse when there is a scan mechanic needed to find things which pratically makes you play at hiccup pace (comes to mind the lasts tomb raiders): few steps, scan, other few steps, scan, repeat. so yeah, yellow paint is a eyesore, but it's less worse than other situations imo.

@tsyumamatsuthehavenofguard328 ай бұрын
Honestly, even after playing this multiple times i still think og re4 is better. Three reasons. 1. the game is really overstretched, and in turn this makes learning speedrun routes a nightmare because a lot of the time sidequests give good equipment loot and the very rare occasion free weapons. This is a case where while you don't need them, to get the best time you have to pick and choose your battles on what's worth it. Reason #2: for some bizarre reason new game plus does not respawn said weapons on new playthroughs, they swap them with gold bars, and literally 90% of the time they aren't worth it. The red9 is genuinely worth it as the gun is only 5000 selling price where as the gold bar is 10 to 15k depending on the difficulty. And finally reason #3: ...i dunno if its just me who notices this crap, but the scaling of difficulty is way off balance in remake compared to the original. Like sure, you can try to avoid enemies like in other remakes and avoid fights, but the ganados especially on professional you notice this... cheat? Like ok throwing down dynamite and it literally being thrown in the opposite direction of their throwing hand, that can possibly be a glitch in their coding, but i have seen these guys _dodge_ bullets on the ground just like krauser on foot, and the amount of stun lock i have seen in this game is borderline _horsesh*t_ Meanwhile on new game plus no matter the difficulty ganados can be one shot by the base handgun on just lv3 when in base new game takes _six_

It's a sidegrade since both games are differently designed around Leon's movement or lack thereof to a near fundamental level. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could have issues getting accustomed to OG Leon's method of shooting past the initial village segment when the enemies literally slow down when they're 2 meters in front of you to give you time to plan & react accordingly. It's game-y and it works by adding a layer of tension to every combat encounter in way that leans heavily into Classic RE's design philosophy. The enemies in Remake on the other hand are way more aggressive (sometimes to an obnoxious degree if we're talking higher difficulties.) to fit Leon's modernized shoot walk. It is less a complete upgrade and moreso a matter of pure subjective preference at this point

@14:00 The issue with *yellow paint* is simple: why is it _not_ something you can turn "On" or "Off"? Better still, add a third option, where it is just a slight discoloration over that area. *Why not make that a feature instead of all-or-nothing difficulty modes?* Because those are kind of _archaic:_ I know it won't work for some aspects of games, but a *lot* of the challenging factors should be on _sliders_ so I can tailor the challenge. If I want it _easy_ or brutally _hard_ across the board, I just set all the sliders accordingly, replicating the effect of all-or-nothing Difficulty Modes. *However,* maybe I just wanna challenge myself in key areas? Or I don't want to challenge myself that much but I'm good at puzzle solving while bad at aiming? Then I could set the sliders for those aspects accordingly!

The funny thing about the yellow paint is there are mods on PC to turn it off, and even after playing the game for like 20 times, i just tried it and used 2 mods, one that shows me all interactible items in a massive radius as a dot, and the one that removes the yellow paint, just to see how easy it is to miss some things if not pointed out, and i was surprised how often i would miss things. On the other hand, the mod also allowed you to recolor the yellow paint as red bloodsplatters, and that immidiatly improved the immersion, because it is much more believable that everything is bloodsplattered than someone just painting everything yellow. On that note i also think the way both 7 Remake and Rebirth did it, where it is very clearly only visible to the player but not really in the game is a lot less intrusive for the immersion. Its easier to suspend your disbelief, when the hint is clearly not really there, compared to Leon never questioning why this town is so obsessed with painting everything yellow. I think the Silent Hill remake did this best with its fully customizable small white ring setup, which is very obviously only visible to the player.

@@redninja3056 in remake you can clear entire areas with just stealth. And in doing so, you actually take care of less enemies. You can even avoid some big guys entirely if you elect to do stealth. Another thing that I myself recently discovered is that you can even shoot barrels to alert groups of enemies and then take them out from afar. And since your knife/knives is also a resource, it plays into yet another core tenant which is resource management. Want to save your knife or save your ammo? And the best part is that it’s not mandatory ever which again goes back to freedom. Even better than that is that the game will allow you to slip up. Get caught? Well you may have thinned the herd but now it’s time fight or evade. The stealth is far from lacking in remake. The combat system is a major step downward. Aiming is particularly bad, as you go from consistent expectations to pure RNG. It also is painfully obvious during the shooting gallery that they never playtested the aiming mechanics for enjoyment. You have to not move to perfect aim, however turning is considered movement. So if I turn to snap on with my perfect accuracy shot, it cancels the perfect accuracy... fun, especially with the SMG. Not only that, but with the stagger changes, you also can't reliably fight enemies. Often times I found myself planning to take care of multiple threats in order, and if a Melee prompt showed up, I didn't have the time to run up and use it in the remake. If they added an option/item to show an enemies' stagger bar like a health bar, or a fully aimed shot guaranteed a stagger, then I think the fighting would be fine, but otherwise the stagger changes are strictly for the worse. The knife having ammo is the most ridiculous change possible. I understand that parries and finishers significantly shorten an enemies lifespan, so just have those two be the only thing using knife ammo. Stealth kills and basic slashes should be infinite by default, as both have an actual risk involved and need an equal reward. Movement is so floaty in the RE engine, that melee is always the wrong option, so anything to make it viable would help. I-frames are also particularly bad, with enemies abusing yours consistently. Never enter an I-frame animation near a dynamite guy because they will instantly reload and pre-light it to hit you the milisecond after your I-frames end, and can even delay the detonation with already thrown dynamite until after those I-frames end. Other enemies do this as well, but dynamite enemies were particularly obvious in abusing this mechanic. Also the grab hitbox is a solid 2-meters beyond their hands, so you have to hope the unreliable crouch counts as a dodge to not be cheesed. QTE changes are mostly bad, but there is one specific aspect that is better. Before if you had to do an action prompt, it was clearly visible on the center of the screen. Now it is relegated to a tiny prompt in the corner for knife parries, and inconsistent when it comes to enemy specific dodges. I so often had no dodge prompt show up on the exact same attack that I dodged seconds ago. The cutscene changes to mostly be in-game instead is the only positive. That means you have a health bar for failures, instead of instadeath. This mechanic would be much better if the knife indicator showed up at the same size near your crosshair in the center. (And enemies dodge prompts were consistent.) Also in terms of story, I'm not sure we played the same Remake 2. The OG2 Leon was the kind altruistic individual that even dropped his gun on Ada when he had no reason to. Remake Leon sees a man locked up in a cell who tells him that the Chief of police is a corrupt psycho, and Leon first thought is naw the reporter was probably evil, and in that same scene he harasses Ada. The remake shows him consistently threatening people first and asking questions later. They make him more Jack Bauer than what a cop should be. Back to Remake 4, I also don't think Ashley's help was useful beyond the blue flame fight. Most of the time it felt like "here Leon, I broke open this window for you even though you've jumped through 14 since we started trying to escape this hell together". It's like she's a chihuahua acting proud after you stop a home invader, it just feels so out of place, and more annoying than endearing. (Plus when it came to gameplay, Ashley kept running in front of me before crouching to avoid my aim, so I don't know what is wrong with her remake AI.) I did enjoy the ammo crafting, but that was just an improvement of what was already done in Revelations 2, and OG3 prior. At the same time the jewel crafting felt bad, as it felt like be poor now, or be poor later. Ammo crafting kept it being good because it still felt like you could make what you lacked, or get more of something weaker. The treasures was just money, so it felt lose-lose. If there were multiple currencies, then the treasure system would have worked better. Also the predatory pricing crept in here with the previously baked in features now being charged for (although other earlier Capcom titles also had this predatory pricing as well), and when you compare dollar to dollar OG4 has Remake4 far beat out.

I too am hoping for CVX Remake to happen next. I don't think that game gets nearly enough credit as the *actual* Resident Evil 3 whereas Nemesis is more of a duology with RE2.

CVX has been memory holed for having 'poor representation'.

I just beat it right now. Watching the credits scroll as i type. What a fantastic remake. Im 33, so i was like 11-12 when the original came out. Very fun. And scary! Im a grown ass man and i was terrified at parts lol

The VR version has easily become one of my favorite games of all time. It's incredible. Hope to see a lot more of this from Capcom.

I'm glad to hear that you've softened a little towards Code Veronica. It has its faults, but the things it gets right (story, setting, music, atmosphere, puzzles) are among the franchise's best in my opinion. I can only hope that a remake of it would be as great as the ones for RE1, 2 and 4.

19:20 fun fact - the composer for SW is Masami Ueda, the legend behind Bayonetta, Devil May Cry 1, and the ORIGINAL Resident Evil 4

LMAO! RE3R is my all time favorite game! I always organize my case manually. Great video! RE4R definitely holds up, I still need to get separate ways though!

Happy to see this one holds up well, I picked it up with my PS5 last year as I had some extra money but only dabbled a bit as real life got in the way along with just the gaming back log growing. I will have to admit I'm a somewhat casual RE fan despite following the series since the original but they've always been a good time for me, even the less stellar titles.

With the yellow paint, it would have been great as an accessibility option. It's just that it isn't
@alanlee678 ай бұрын
Yea. I personally don't like the remake but I definitely realize what it does well and it's a more respectful remake than a certain other high profile remake of a certain beloved 7th game in another series.

The Mercenaries is just so good, so fun. I'd buy just a Mercenaries game with new characters and stages, enemies etc. There is still a thriving community of Mercs players, I hope Capcom bring dlc.

RE4R is incredible. Just a great remake, and a great game overall. It's even good on a base PS4. A fantastic swan-song from Capcom for last gen consoles. The price was spot-on as well. 40 for the standard, 45 for the Deluxe, DLC launched for 8. RE4R was the last great new game at the 2000-2018 era pricing 😅

Their both amazing games. They should be kept seperate but i like the remake more and think both 2 remake and 4 remake should be the cannon imo. Re is my favorite gaming ip of all time but that's because the og re in 96 has a special place in my life my dad did something special for my birthday when my mom said no and it changed my life forever and I'm now 40 with my own boys so i love seeing these remakes from my childhood and being able to expirence them with my boys it's crazy how much capcom and re has been a part of my life.

I'm halfway through the video and already hate what I've seen them do to the game, the original was perfect, and although some extra items and areas are expected of a remake, all the other stuff only decreased it's value as a game, you couldn't get me to buy this if it was 1$ or even if you would pay me 100$ to play it, thr remake is an absolute insult to the original.
@stevenindepth68077 ай бұрын
The people that say the “Stealth System” is practically useless I’m sure have not played this game on professional difficulty lol the fact you can use the crossbow and knife to plow through entire areas of the game without being seen allowing you to save so much ammo and health items for more intense fights has been critical for getting through the game with resources to spare

I wasn't originally a huge fan of the original RE4 and was kind of against it actually as I felt like it was straying too far from what made Resident Evil, well, Resident Evil. Finally got around to playing and beating RE4 for the first time in like 2020 or so (on the PS4, lol) and eventually fell in love with it. Went on to 100% the game on PS4 even though the game doesn't reward a Platinum trophy. Wasn't sure what to expect from the RE4 remake but it blew me away and I honestly like it better than the original. I can totally understand why someone would prefer the original game, but I think this game is a MASTERPIECE. I cant believe I'm saying this but I also think RE2 remake is better than the original and I LOVE the original RE2. Been enjoying your content and its always great to see a RE creator on KZbin. Keep at it!

RE4 remake received alot of love from the devs and it shows in every aspect. Kinda wish RE3 received the same kind of love, RE2 remake while great it was a great start for the new era, it's flaws can be excused since its the first one, but I'm still salty how RE3 got treated

RE4R is the biggest 9,5/10 I can imagine. Things that are kind of...not that good...can be counted with the fingers of one hand. BUT the good things, wow, you can talk about those all day long...
