The Internet depends on a lot of protocols. I spent a semester in networking and can tell you for a fact that it would be entirely impractical for James May to list and describe every protocol. He covered the basics, and that's about as much as the average viewer will care to remember.

Underwater tunnel is easy - they make tunnel sections on land, then sink them, so when they land on the "ground", they align to the tunnel shape. Then they just seal it up, and suck the water out.

On February 3, 1690, the Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first paper money in the U.S., in order to pay for its war. Massachusetts was a truly pioneering colony when it came to money. They were also the first to mint their own silver coins in 1652, despite a British law against it. The paper money created in 1690 was called a bill of credit, and represented the colony's obligation to the soldiers. The soldiers could spend/trade the colony's IOU just like silver and gold coins.

It means your connection is encrypted using a public/private key encryption technique, and that a trusted third party server has verified via a SSL certificate that you really are connected the website that you think you're connected to, and not some other server. This stuff is insanely complicated, we're going to need a lot more than one video to explain it. ;)

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure, it just means that regular "internet transmissions" are encrypted while they are being sent to you, you will often see paypal, ebay and some parts of facebook encrypted with h.t.t.p.s to make it difficult for hackers to steal your personal data. Hope this helped :D

That is not correct. You don't "share" the IP address, rather a DHCP server issues an IP address to your device from an available pool of IP addresses that it keeps. When the IP address expires it is either renewed or it goes back into the pool of available addresses which at that time may get issued to another device upon request. TCP/IP for Dummies is a really good book to read up on basics of networking.

Technically, the IP is a 32-bit field, which is conveniently converted into four batches of 8-bits, or octets. Each octet is then converted (for ease of use by us puny humans) into decimal, and each field could vary from one digit to three digits (0-255). So, there could be anything from four digits in an IP address up to twelve - but I agree with you - eleven is not 'the' answer to how many digits in an IP address. That's lazy on Captain Slows part.

You have made a bit of a mistake... Although there are no dejure standards regarding Protocol Data Unit (PDU) descriptors at the various stages of encapsulation/ decapsulation, the defacto descriptor of a TCP PDU is 'Segment'.

Wow, I found a mistake... IPv4 needs up to 12 digits to express an IP address (in decimal), not just eleven. Also, the same number may express two or more IP addresses because there are periods to care about. Thus, 11.11.11.11 and 111.1.1.111 have the same digits but are different IP's. I loved the salt pot metaphore, though inexact an incomplete, but beautiful and good enough, but this thing with IP's is quite important.

Thought this was a really well explained answer. Sure the thing about cache servers was perhaps a bit much at the beginning, but then you don't get trolls (such as myself) picking you up about it. Also, I suppose you forgot to mention that I don't simply connect to B directly, but through C, D and E etc - again, maybe a bit much!

The World Wide Inter-Web can tell me everything I ever needed to know about Richard Hammond. It tells me, for example, that R.H. was born in a mythical place, called Solihull, and that he was born in the same year that Apollo 11 didn't land on the Moon. But this is all quite clearly bunk because R.H. hasn't got a grey hair on his head, and those teeth are far too white...

IP address is 4 numbers separated by dots. each number is 8 bits for a total of 32 bits. each number can be from 0-255. total number of digits in address not a set number, could be 9, 10, 11, 12. These numbers are then converted to binary to be read by the tubes. then there's IPv6...
