I almost drowned this past weekend after my engine cut out on me and I had to make an emergency water landing. I had a 360 camera going but the SD card got corrupted so there's no video. I was actually planning on sending it in for this series. At any rate I had flotation on but it was near the bottom of my cage. Since the air in my gas tank was also giving buoyancy to the bottom of my cage the top was pushing my head into the water and it was hard to keep my head above water. I was able to unbuckle and get away fortunately. If my flotation was higher up on my cage I more than likely would have just been floating there until I could get someone to help me. Instead I almost drowned! To all my fellow paramotor pilots: please properly place your flotation! It could turn a life threatening situation into simply an embarrassment.

#5 looks like a wake encounter. High loading plus maneuvering, all in relatively calm air, means the wake loiters in a compact volume with concentrated vorticity for extended periods. Fly back and forth looking for it long enough and you will eventually fly through it. Soaring instructors know this from the figure-8 maneuver over an intersection or other land mark. Take the student through this early in their training in calm air, and you know if you hit the mark over the intersection when you feel your own wake. Later on it gets more difficult to cross the same intersection when its windy, and you will virtually never hit your own wake in those conditions. Its great to do it early in a student's training because of the realization and positive vibe if you hit the wake at the intersection. In vid #5, it seems like the canopy suddenly exhibits uncompensated momentum otherwise unrelated to flight condition or control input, and that is exactly what a wake encounter will do to a soft wing. Canopy relative work (CRW) skydivers always try to avoid this but deal with it regularly, especially when breaking in the newbie who doesn't understand where the wake goes relative to the canopy. Low altitude powered flight will prevent the wake from descending significantly because the surface is so close. In slalom it can be even worse because multiple parts of the extended wake turbulence can wrap around each other and increase the danger volume near where that happens. - A Rocket Scientist

Your comment on the wingtip drag video about not succumbing to the temptation to show off reminded me of some sage advice a good friend once got. I hope you can forgive the tangent I'm about to go on. A good friend who is an accomplished drummer was sitting in the kitchen of a Chicago blues originator, Dave Myers, having a chat. Dave asked him, "Ya know when you're playing and everything's sounding great and then you decide to do something fancy?" Then Dave's eyes got big and he said very emphatically "Don't do it!" Of course when you screw up the groove on stage, nobody's gonna get hurt. Thanks for the great videos!

The aerobatic incident at 12:00, I think their prop's thrust, momentum, and drag moment saved the flight. When it began to drag, the forward momentum causes an upward swing which allowed enough altitude to recover once the wing reinflated. Luck and skill combined I reckon!

Do you think that engine is ruined from the water?
@1over1374 жыл бұрын
Just remember the wing fills with water and when full will weight several tons. If there is any current, tide or waves you want to unclip IMMEDIATELY. The BPHA recommend unclipping before ditching and only keeping a single leg strap connected, lean forward and dangle your feet, unclick the final leg strap and let the water drag you out of the harness as the wing overshoots, leaving you free from the tangle hazard. Water landings are considered an automatic fatality by the BHPA, as so many have lost their lives even on a beach being entangled and dragged under by the wing. I have seen videos of an incident where 3 people tried to help a paraglider out of the water but they could not pull the wing hard enough.
@mwiz1004 жыл бұрын
It is common practice in skydiving that if you are near any body of water you have a hook knife so to cutaway your lines as soon as you land for the same reasons. PPG pilots should do the same if you're going to fly near water. Trying to undo a carabiner post-water landing may cost you valuable time.
@1over1374 жыл бұрын
@@mwiz100 Most harnesses use quick relase clips. They are designed to lock under tension, but are quick release when slack. So it's usually fairly easy to get out the harness quickly if you prepare for it.

Hello from Saigon! For number 4: the speed bar setup is supposed to be used at high speed. In this case, his flying speed is not enough plus he is climbing up, the result is like having a wind blowing down from the top of the wing that makes the wing collapes. The collapse killed the climbing and stablized ifself.

Hi! At 12:00, the same event occurred as occurs when the flutter starts at the hard wing!))) ... normally, the stream flowing around the top of the wing has a high speed, which means lower pressure, and this creates a lift upward. But at a certain flow rate, the upper layer does not have time to laminarly flow around and a pressure cushion builds up on top of the leading edge of the wing, which grows like a snowball!))) And the pilot does not have time to do anything when the wing abruptly loses lift. At the hard wing, when falling down, the pillow blows off))) and the wing returns the lift even in excess!, and everything repeats again! ...but the soft parachute just stops and deflates by pressure from above, and inflates flap-pops up again) ... I think it's not as dangerous as on the plane))) Good luck! ... my apologies for google translation)))

NO, the pilot is NOT supposed to sit in the back seat in a PPC (powered parachute). The backseat always is in the middle of the craft, so the craft is always balanced whether you have a weight or not. And also you need an FAA license to operate one of these things. Mostly likely the cause of this China flip is that the main cord might have been rolled under the tires as opposed to go on top. There is a small wing-let where the tires are placed. I don't know the rational behind that wing-let for these crafts which can top around 35 mph. But well... it was in China... so... What do i know, i am just a rocket engineer. ;-) Your videos are great by the way.

Hey Tucker, like you, I was really intrigued by Nico Aubert's incident. I watched it frame by frame, and also watched the original on his page. While I have zero flight experience in paramotoring, I am an engineer, and looked at the incident from that perspective. I have a theory, and would love your opinion on it. To arrive at this opinion, I had to make a number of educated guesses. You said that the guys that do this usually run 250cc, 2-stroke motors. I'm guessing that probably means about 30-35 hp, and probably 80-85 kg thrust at full throttle. I don't know how tall he is, but Nico looks like a pretty athletic, lean guy. I'm guessing he comes in at around 70-75 kg. At the moment in the video when the wing collapses, it goes behind him. (I think you called it a tail drag.) At the same time, his feet and legs whip out in front of him, putting him on his back, but also kind-of swinging him upward like on a swing. It looks like he was able to use his forward/upward momentum, combined with the significant output of his motor, to momentarily become a helicopter. The tail drag of his wing appears to have acted like a tail rotor, providing enough rotational impedance in the moment to let him full-throttle rotor lift his full weight just long enough for the wing to recover, without having his body start spinning against the torque of the prop. What do you think? Am I talking out of my rear, or could this be a reasonable explanation? Either way, it was some killer flying on his part! Cheers!

I'd have to agree with that. You need the luck to be in exactly the right position to recover, the skill to pull it off and the willpower to commit to the recovery. The pain comes during the process, when your harness tries to pull itself out the top of your head through your groin, and if it goes wrong. The pleasure comes from actually pulling it off. And we all know the name Nico Aubert because of it.
