I dont mind a little sugar in the bottle. Sugar is a bit like salt to the tongue, a little can make something taste more like itself. That being said, I wish rum (and tequila) would have more transparency in what is in the bottle. Im still going to buy what I like, but it would be nice to know whats in it.

Have you tried Koaloa Coconut Rum? It is perfect. It does not taste sweetened, just has the aromatic nature of being steeped in coconut. Their regular white rum is no good but the Coconut is their best product, perfection.
@SandstormGT3 ай бұрын
I have both as well and after trying them both neat several times, I feel like I enjoy the Cut & Dry more. Maybe because it is a little bit sweeter out of the bottle, before it makes its way into a cocktail.

Great video! 'The Hard Truth' is made in Indiana yes - and is infused with real toasted coconut and clearly some added sugar... it's crazy sweet toasted coconut taste ....it's superb mixed with a higher proof whites like Denize, Real McCoy, 10 to 1 and such. I went out and bought a bottle of Siesta Key Toasted Coconut Rum (40%) tonight after watching this, they didn't have Cut & Dry, it's worth sipping neat, barrel aged and I love it. Thanks for all the info!

I blended my own coconut rum with Plantarey OD and 3 Star fat washed with virgin coconut oil and infused with organic large coconut flakes. It stands out pretty nicely in the cocktails I've used it in, but it would get overpowered in something more complex than a daiquiri or other more classic style cocktails.

After my honeymoon in Kawaii and touring the Koloa location there I immediately ordered their entire catalog to be delivered home... I was so glad when I found a local asian grocer that has an attached liquor store that stocks it as MSRP. This is definitely what reignited my interest in rum.

Completely agree that one can enjoy but if one does not explore others you may not know if something is better for your taste, and taste do change over time. One vote I have for your homemade coconut rum (ps did similar with Pineapple rum) is one may not be able to find the Planteray rum due to availability and still want a quality coconut rum if non are available. I did pick it up and within a few days the store had their entire stock.

I think each one of us has those things that most people love, but you don't. Tbh, I've tried Plantation 3* and Original Dark and I really love them. I think that 3* has unique funk/flavor that doesn't suit to every white rum cocktail. Liqueur I don't like, but most people do is white Flor de Cana :D

Yes, or really any rum that you like. But you need to love coconut otherwise it will just sit on the shelf for a long long time.

Love the way you compared these! Cocktail before neat since that's way its typically used. BTW: I wish the FDA would take over the alcohol industry instead of the dept tobacco and firearms(I guess Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau now days). That way we could get a nutrition label with all the sugar and artificial flavors listed.

I wonder if you started with a typical Barbados and tossed a little coconut milk and/or coconut cream and/or cream of coconut etc? I know Flor de Cana makes some nice aged rum too, and I felt they compared well with $30ish Seales sort of entry level Barbados. Flor is Nicaraguan I guess....

Cut and dry is the best coconut rum. Its rum with a hint of coconut, not the other way around (just like stiggins fancy). It is sweet, but not sickly sweet and way more rum forward than ever coconut rum I've tried (though i heard coconut cartel is more drier, watch i haven't tried)
@taylorcopeland75293 ай бұрын
Coconut Cartel is absolutely drier. They list it at 120 calories per 1.5 oz, which leads me to believe the only sugar added in the Cartel is from the coconut water itself. It's quite good, more of a straight sipper for me. The Cut & Dry, alternatively, is basically a liquid Samoa.

I like it but some criticisms I have is that it’s very Chocolatey and tastes more like the brown skin of a coconut. Another thing is that in a mix it dominates as a Diva spirit. Only half an ounce and it destroys a lot of other flavors.

@million_unalived_CEOs3 ай бұрын
lol, yeah Planteray's website has those very cute "let your graphic designer run wild with their vision!" aesthetics. it's pretty enough. it's also borderline unusable. difficult to navigate, and pretty slow. works better than expected on mobile, but is still even more of a pain there. I get wanting a cute landing page for your brand, but it's a really poor fit to serve people visiting just to see a product list, or some of the specs they're known for sharing.

Would be interesting to see how it would taste in a Pina Colada

I've watched this video for two seconds when writing this comment: The cut & dry is crap. I had it in July. I'm sure yours will be better (anything will) but would yours be better than Bacardi Coconut, which is excellent (believe it or not!)... That is the question.

Cartel coconut (rum cut with coconut water) is an excellent alternative. I don’t like the Bacardi family, but do your own research on them. Good rum, but I won’t support.

@@jonathanhoward5284 I have no love for Bacardi as a brand but I know their 8 year rum is good in cocktails and the coconut rum tastes good on its own at least. Won't touch the carta blanca anymore, have had my share of gallons of that in my life. No need for research 😀

Interesting experiment. I still remain unconvinced there’s any particularly good reason for coconut infused rum to exist.
@6x6Majin3 ай бұрын
I would agree for most infused spirits but I think rum gets away with it given the versatility of most rum drinks and the way rum flavors balance, especially tiki drinks which love being packed with layers of different flavors. It's a subtle enough flavor to not overpower the entire thing but bold enough to be noticeable among all of the other flavors and with it being infused in the rum, you don't have to sacrifice one of the other syrups/liquers to get that flavor in there without messing with ratios. You just use the infused rum instead and now you have the same drink but with an additional layer of coconut flavor. Other spirits, IMO, don't balance out the same with infusions as rum does and while they can still work, they tend to produce much more bespoke cocktails instead of flavored variants. Rum handles that better.
@markcalhoun82193 ай бұрын
Personally the primary reason is Rum and Coke, Dr Pepper finally released a coconut flavor but coke is still not there. But yeah for cocktails you can easily use coconut syrup or cream of coconut or coconut milk or coco lopez.
@makeanddrink3 ай бұрын
I have to agree since I don't see myself using either one of these on the foreseeable future.
