How worried should we really be about the threat of political violence? On this week’s episode of “Matter of Opinion,” columnist Jamelle Bouie joins the hosts to set the record straight on whether we’re actually living through an unusually violent era, and they discuss whether the new movie, “Civil War,” could come true.
Plus, Keanu Reeves in his most beautiful form yet.
(A full transcript of this audio essay will be available within 24 hours of publication on the Times website.)
Recommended in this episode:
• “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning” by Liz Cheney
• “Johnny Mnemonic: In Black & White,” a 2022 rerelease of Robert Longo’s 1995 film

I worked with a vocal Trump supporter for 8 months. I did not realize how readily people will worship what they are ignorant of, if they can be part of their choosen group.

@@larryames8831 You are that upset at peace and anti-warrantless spying? You could sell your stocks in the arms industry if it upsets you so much to have peace.

Many Americans have only the US Civil War as their template for what a civil war looks like: two geographically distinct territories going to battle with each other using uniformed troops and heavy ammunition in organized military campaigns. The VAST majority of civil wars around the world DO NOT LOOK LIKE THAT. Most of them look much more like guerilla insurgencies. That's why a war that involves some states "seceding" and going to war with other states is highly unlikely. But that doesn't mean that civil war is unlikely.

For the Schnecksville PA conversation, how much of this expectation is tied with the end of the world story line. many religious leaders push for these “end of the world” scenarios and political leaders are replicating and feeding this fear/desire.

I really don't know why, but I never read Jamal's columns. But I liked the way he came across here, so I'll start now.

We take over countries with small teams, folks. If you're not sure where the US is regarding a civil war possibility, find discussions by Barbara F. Walter, a subject matter expert on the topic. Unimaginable? It's happened here before.

Thats an interesting think; but by that metric i’d argue its happened quite recently. Methinks these maga mofos flatter themselves imagining they have much more than the armaments for actual war. ¡They rack disciprine!;)

Sure, they have plans in place, but do those plans rely on Lindsay Graham or others of his ilk?

I'm very glad that a BLM supporter is talking about Trump's dangerous rhetoric, like when he called for peaceful and patriotic protests not even a year after 'mostly peaceful protests' killed dozens and torched numerous cities.

@@Pussaychop I'll gladly explain. I'm referring to the height of hypocrisy of a BLM supporter calling it 'violent rhetoric' to call for a patriotic and peaceful protest, when his own movement spent 7 months looting and burning down cities.
