How Does Welding Work?

Welding has been around in some form or fashion since the 4th century A.D., but modern welding techniques fueled the industrial revolution and are crucial to many modern industries.
Welding is a very broad term covering hundreds if not thousands of specific materials joining processes.
The main welding processes are shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG) gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), electroslag welding (ESW), and lastly resistance welding. Did you get all that?

im confused. what melts and binds the two metal parts together ? is it the welding rod melted ? or is it still the base metal melted to bind the two metal parts and no part of the welding rod remains in the slag ? what is the welding rod for and why does does it get consumed ?

So I'm going to talk about stick welding exclusively here, just because it sets a good foundation for understanding welding. Stick welding uses flux coated electrodes to melt and fuse the base metal together. The electrode (welding rod) serves a few purposes, it acts a path for electric current to move through, it contains consumable metal that is added to the weld, and it contains a flux coating that becomes slag that will protect the molten weld pool from oxidation. Here is a step by step process of what happens when you stick weld. First you initiate the arc. This arc begins melting the base material and the welding rod itself. As the welding rod starts melting, it fuses with the base material. While the welding rod melts, so does the flux coating. It becomes a slag covering on the weld and protects it from the atmosphere. Once the weld pool solidifies the slag can be removed. I hope that answered some of your questions. Let me know if you have any more

Im going to be graduating high school soon and I was looking into doing a trade rather than going to university, and I've never done welding in my life, Ive done some soldering for a robotics team a few years ago but thats it idk if that counts lol. At 1:44 you say that the gas used in TIG welding is "usually helium". That is incorrect. It is usually Argon, or a mixture of Argon with other gases in varying percentages - and yes, helium is sometimes included, but not always, or even "usually" - as it pertains to the dominate gas used.

@Craig F. Thompson Helium is very hard to generate and is thus much more expensive. My understanding from watching Periodic Videos is that there is actually a growing worldwide shortage of Helium, because it is so hard to come by. Also, since it is much lighter than air, it doesn't "linger" at the weld as well as Argon - which is much heavier than air, unless you're doing an overhead weld. I wasn't aware that welding schools used helium exclusively since I've never been to one, but maybe they do it because it kinda forces you to hold a tight arc to maintain the shield over the puddle - actually a pretty good idea!

what they failed to mention is traditional forge welding. quite simply heat the metal in a furnace, pour borax on it, and beat it together. welding put simply is two liquids joining together.

I would LOVE to go to school for welding however math has never ever been a strong suit for me and that's a big requirement so I'm having huge doubts. I took a welding program in highschool and remember loving every day in the shop.

Math is learnable over time, I was never the best at math but was able to get an engineering degree. If you love the job, the math learning will come over time :)

Tel about AC and DC tig. You van weld rust free steel with Mig 2, you shal need special roll of ammo bit you van do it. Dont forget that you have different kinds of Tongsten insirts tot tig. Dekens on your work bit the teghniec doffers kwite a lot. That's wur some simple mistakes i steen but nothinh to wurry about. Nice vid

This doesn't really explain how it works. It just tells us that different metals require different processes to BE welded. You sort of glossed over what the video title was about - the "how does it work?" I think even a complete noob is savvy enough to figure out it has to do with fusing the two pieces together. But what I want is a more in-depth explanation on the fusion process itself. For example, it's understood that when metals are superheated, they become weaker. So how are welds so strong when cooled? I mean, I see joined pieces all the time that are under tremendous stress but don't break. For example, on a car with a solid rear axle, the lower shock absorber mounts are welded to the axle housing. On the road at speed, the shocks are subjected to extreme abuse as the axle bobs up and down over road imperfections and the body bounces up/down from the springs dissipating energy. In effect, these lower shock mounts must support at least half of the vehicle's body weight at times. How do these tiny welds not break?! Or what about the frame of a dirt bike? Their joints are welded and during extreme events like motorcross, the frame is subjected to immense stress. How do the welds not break?! I get that the process involves essentially "melting" the edges of the two pieces so that they "fuse" together, but when they cool, surely they metals can't be as strong as they were before they were heated?

Basically, an arc of high amperage is made between two pieces of metal melting them. Then, a filler metal in the form of wire, rods, and coated rods, is added to the molten "puddle". then as the arc moves, the puddle behind it cools and solidifies, forming the weld.
