Learn more about Human Footprint: www.pbs.org/show/human-footprint
For thousands of years, dogs have been our loyal companions, adapting alongside humans in a sensational journey. However, it wasn't until the 1800s that a significant shift occurred when breeding became a competitive sport. The result? A staggering array of nearly 400 dog breeds, each varying in almost every trait imaginable.
Human Footprint host Shane Campbell-Staton meets these posh pooches and unlocks the secrets of the canine code. In this digital episode, we examine how the Westminster Kennel Club played a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich diversity of dog breeds - resulting directly from the hand of human intervention. We unravel how genes and selective breeding shape these remarkable creatures, with some mutations linking dogs and humans more than expected.

The best dogs are the mixed breed. People who breed dogs very often cause them a lot of suffering. A Pug, for example, should be outlawed. These dogs were bred to have almost no nose. They have trouble breathing. Many other dog breeds have been developed for human pleasure at the expense of the dog health and well being. This is terrible.

The happiest, healthiest and most wonderful dogs I've met are mixes, even a mix of just two breeds makes a big difference in genetic diversity My current dog is a wonderful mix of kelpie, collie and lab, and she has the best of each breed. Her kelpie and collie love for chasing balls helps reduce the lab food obsession she experiences, as an example We had an old dog who was stubborn, gentle and lovely, she was such a mix we had no idea what her lineage was, and she was perfect Here's to the Mutts✊

The best part of the dog show are all the weird dogs who definitely aren’t going to win but are SO PUMPED to be there (but seriously, once you’ve reached the point where a breed can longer GIVE BIRTH, you need to take a step back and examine if what you’re doing is good for the animals)

Pure breed lines being maintained in an unhealthy state for a look (which tends to deviate from the original breed) is, frankly, criminal. That side of the industry should be changed or banned!

I was 24 when my therapist suggested I maybe get a dog, and I'd wanted one for 20 years but my parents had been allergic, and I was hesitant. But I got this rescue boxer, Percy, and I kid you not, he saved my life. In the worst period of my mental illness, when I had been in and out of a psych ward, Percy became this anchor I didn't know I needed. And then he loved on my kids and cuddled them and let them put socks on his feet and capes around his neck, and just brightened up my whole family for years. They're so good and they bring us so much.

My Izzy passed away this past September. Since she was a rescue I had no idea how old she really was. I had her for 8 years. She appeared to be a Husky/Whippet mix. Very smart, very talkative and alot of fun. Never had a dog like her and probably will never have another like her.

My Percy was a rescue, boxer, and we had him for 8 years too. He was so sweet and patient and loving with my kids, I couldn't ask for a better dog. He was the dog I'd dreamed of since I was 4 years old. I love my current dog, Shyla, a 3-legged husky(?) rescue, and I'm so happy to have her in my family, but there will definitely never be another Percy.

I was surprised to see how well they spoke on dog shows and their breeding methods. Yes I know they mentioned the poor effects of inbreeding at the end, but I feel the overall tune was very positive, so it makes me feel weird about this video. Idk I maybe the only one

Look... no argument from me breeders selecting for healthy traits is a good thing, HOWEVER, the breeding industry selects for the worse (health wise) dogs based on superficial "what won last year" traits. Look at what they did to German Shepards, let alone pugs. The best thing breeders could do for dogs is let dogs inter-breed, breed. "Pure breeds" is essentially inbreeding.
@alveolate
@alveolate 27 күн бұрын
what did they do to german shepherds? also, with all the genetic knowledge that we now have... wouldn't it be possible for these dog breeders to draw from a larger gene pool while still keeping certain traits? like, a litter of puppies could be 6 or even more... so some traits are very likely to be retained, while the rest can be let go to normie pet stores right? just wondering if there's a more humane way to do whatever it is they're doing... i also think breeds with harmful traits should straight up be banned or "discontinued".

Breed standards NEED to be changed. For instance, the breed standard for French bulldogs shows 2 images. One is 'correct' according to the standard and one is 'incorrect'. The image of the 'incorrect' dog shows a Frenchie with somewhat of a nose, whereas the 'correct' dog shows a Frenchie without a nose. Even if breeders want to breed healthier dogs, the breed standard means they can't.

If a dog breed can’t reproduce naturally then maybe it’s time to either breed them back to being healthy even if they don’t fit breed standards or ban the breeding.

Kennel clubs have singlehandely destroyed the genetic diversity of almost every breed of dog they recognise. In every other species we recognise the need for outcrossing, keeping stud books open, and breeding using methods based in scientific fact. In dogs, the majority of breeders (and therefor judges and mentors) do not have the knowledge nor the motivation to save their breeds before its too late. They live in a phantasm where they believe their chosen breed of dog is special and distinct from any other, and that phantasm causes them to spread misinformation in order to keep their breed "pure", resulting in breed pools that are getting smaller and smaller by the decade. The dog fancy needs to change, and that starts with breeders, and ends with kennel clubs being completely restructured. Some breed clubs and kennel clubs are making steps towards helping responsible breeders do the work to start saving dog breeds, and hopefully the methods they are using will become mainstream

It should be said that most of the "working dog" breeds have (at least) two lines. One for work, the other for show. The second is worse at doing the job, but "more beautiful" which almost always means less healthy. Beauty hurts - the dog. It should hurt the breeder, but alas...

wonderful, make up somewhat arbitrary rules of what a purebred race is, which btw is all based on looks not genetics, next say that dogs that adhere to the arbitrary standard are more beautiful. I have the same issue with the miss universe where all the woman look more or less the same as if other looks can not be beautiful too.
