He arrived 3 hours late, filthy and with the oar-made wooden sword to enrage Sasaki and his entourage. This worked and Musashi positioned himself with his back towards the sun to blind Sasaki and felt, when he killed his opponent, no glory, but instead that he burned a library with everything Sasaki had learned and loved, and retired because he wanted to never fight to the death again, and thus take another life.

Fun fact: Musashi had help developing his nito style from Yagyu Munenori and his sons. Shinkage and Yagyu Shinkage-ryu had scrolls on two sword technique and with Munenori's guidance he perfected them and then established his own school once Munenori gave him a scroll of mastery. So in many ways Ni ten ichi-ryu is an offshoot of Yagyu Shinkage-ryu.

For any interested in random history knowledge. The opponent, Sasaki Kojiro, was a renowned shogun feared and respected by all who knew him. He was also known to have a size-able ego. Musashi used this knowledge to his advantage, turning his opponent’s hubris against him. He arrived two hours late to their scheduled duel, and on top of that brought a bokken whittled from an oar as his only weapon. This infuriated Kojiro to the point of blind rage in which he was felled with relative ease by Musashi. Musashi had read his opponent well and using what he knew to his advantage, overcame a battle that should’ve been hard fought with little to no effort. A true master. I love this story so much 🤩

Dunno about "The Sword Saint". Musashi was given the title of "Kensei" which the literal meaning is Sword Saint but he wasn't the only one. What was surprising is Musashi was also a military man and Kensei hadn't been given to anyone in the military before. It was a title for those who dedicated themselves completely to the study and meditation of swordplay, like monks and priests. Hence the term "Sword SAINT". Also might wanna double check that bit about the ore, cuz Sasaki was cut down by Musashi. Their dual lasted hours until the sun rose.

Musashi wasn't sure if he could win the duel against Kojiro, who used an unusually long sword (possibly a Nodachi) with surprising speed. So he carved and used an oar to close the gap in reach difference. He arrived to the duel late on purpose, so that the sun would be in his desired position. He turned his back to the sun, so that the light shined into Kojiro's eyes, disturbing him long enough for Musashi to bonk him.

Musashi was definitely real, but his duels ate mythical. Among "the 60" are samurai who lived 200 years apart from each other. Also an interesting note, it's widely accepted by historians that Sasaki didn't exist. Similarly his "story" would require him to have been alive for 300 years, while constantly seeking out and fighting famous people who weren't actually famous when he met them

Musashi made Kojiro wait for a long time and appeared on their duel site hours (?) after the agreed time. While making Kojiro wait, Musashi was making his oar sword. Kojiro was tilted and all the waiting was part of Musashi's tricks to have advantage over Kojiro (so it was low key cheating). It's not even confirmed if Kojiro was real.

His opponent was a high ranking official in Japan and prided himself on “honor” and hated M because he felt he acted without honor. 2 swords are obviously better than one. Like without question or debate. But duel welding was so rare in Japan. It’s weird that we don’t hear about more often. There is a school of fighting with two swords called niten Ichi Ryu Wich is based on the technique of Musashi.
