@@camh6328 Yes, that bio is studio fiction. Burr was never married or had a child. He made it all up. To hide the fact, he was homosexual. Raymond Burr, made the fictional family/ marriages have tragic endings. That way, people wouldn’t ask too many questions. Although, all of Hollywood, including his good friend Barbara Hale, (He named one of his prize winning Roses after her.), knew he was gay. Raymond was with a man until his death, for thirty-eight years. Which is pretty darn good, (Gay or straight.), for Hollywood.

Just as you said. It was all a facade because of the intolerance of gay people in that 1950s prudish environment. Thanks for bringing it up as well.!

to quote from Wikipedia "Ray Bidwell Collins was an American character actor in stock and Broadway theatre, radio, films and TV...With 900 stage roles to his credit, he became one of the most sucessful actors in the developing field of radio drama" My favoite was his appearance in Orson Welles' The Magnificient Ambersons (novel by Booth Tarkington who won a Pulitzer Prize for the novel). A classic movie that all should see. It debuted two actors: Anne Baxter and Tim Holt. Another Collins role was in yet another Welles' film, Citizen Kane.

Barbara Hale's my favorite! While I was a student and working part-time at the May Co. North Hollywood store in the 1070's, I actually served her. The other salespeople didn't recognize her when she came into our department, but I spotted her immediately and went right up to her and asked, "Hello, Mrs. Hale. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you." She threw me a bright smile, obviously enjoying that I recognized her. I had to "educate" the other salespeople around me when I finished ringing up a purchase for her: "That was Perry Mason's secretary, Della Street!" Classy lady and still very lovely in the 70's!

In my unofficial poll of the greatest TV theme songs of all time. . .I too rate the theme from "Perry Mason" as tops. Mainly because of the way it "rolls" back around from the chorus. Brilliant orchestration. Second place: "Gunsmoke". Third: "Peter Gun". Back in the glory days of the late '50s' through the '60s, TV sitcoms used full orchestras and great composers. Won't see that around ever again. This is MY poll. Feel free to add your picks, sports fans. Lots of great ones from that spectacular era.

Why can't you tell the truth about RB. No, wife in 43 who died. Maybe no other wives either. He was one of those lucky men who , Knew the Love that Dare not speak it's name. His partner of 30 years was Robert Benevides.

He was obviously ashamed of his lifestyle so he made up stories about wives and children ect.
@sarahjones21403 жыл бұрын
Not ashamed, just had to hide that he was gay like so many others. He was married once, for a few months which was annulled. The other marriages and the death of a child were made up. Raymond Burr had his reasons for this, but he took them to his grave.

I agree! He was a great actor but unfortunately, being gay wasn’t good for your career in the 50’s. I’m glad he and his partner had many years together. In the present, who cares if he was gay? just tell the truth.
@jennywren78222 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought that, he was married only once to keep the wolves at bay for a few months, as Rock Hudson. You couldn't be gay then, and as for being ashamed Why's that? Its nobodies business if he was gay, its made no difference to my respect of him as a man....

Barbara Hale and her husband, Bill Williams, lived next to my cousins who had purchased their home from Clayton Moore, the alone Ranger. Jeff Donnell and Aldo Ray were also neighbors. Loved her stories about fun times in the neighborhood.

Fun stuff, thanks for sharing the life story of your cousins! Which Perry Mason episode is the most memorable for you?

That should read Lone Ranger. They lived on Greenbush Ave. in Sherman Oaks from the late 40’s to the early 80’s. I loved all the Perry Mason shows but at age 88 my recall for plots has vanished.

Thank you for explaining why Ray Collins appeared in that many credits when was not in those particular episodes. I always wondered about that. Also, it was a nice touch, on the part of the producers, to include him since he was watching at home.

During the 1960s when I was a little boy my mom used to have this on every day. But in them days there wasn't a hole lot to choose from. The show wasn't very entertaining for a small boy but since my mother died lord what I wouldn't give just to sit with my mom and watch Perry Mason one more time.

Raymond Burr lied about his supposed wives and son. He was a closeted gay. His long time partner's name is Robert Benevides. They remain together until Burr's death. Robert is still alive nowadays, December 2021. All of the Perry Mason actors were outstanding. Rest in peace all of them

I always like Perry Mason, all the actors were excellent. I know that they were just acting but I didn't like the way Hamilton Burger looked at Perry Mason he always tried to get him disbarred. I still watch Perry Mason today and it's still as good as it was when it first aired. May all the actors and actress Rest In Peace, gone but never forgotten

My favorite actors on the series was the judge played by Willis Bouchey and William Hooper/Paul Drake. Hooper was initially written to play Perry Mason vice-versa for Burr...The younger Barbara Hale and actress Lisa Gaye could've passed for twin sisters.

Many times, the show tips you off with one character saying "I could kill him!", which tells us who the murder victim will be and who Mason will defend. But I love it anyway!

Great review of some extraordinary actors, the likes of which we know not today. And almost all of them had military service in World War II and, before that suffered through the Great Depression, and knew the hard facts of life, which made their acting careers and styles much more realistic. Thank you so much. In 1962, as an eight year old boy, we were walking on Wilshire Boulevard and we encountered William Talman. He was very genial and pleasant to everyone, who of course recognized him in an instant, with his brilliant naturally red hair. And of course he had a cigarette in his hand and was smoking like a choo-choo train, poor man. That will always be my memory of him.

I have watched every episode many times and have them all on tape. As with so many great shows they followed a strict formula. In the first scene there is a nasty guy who you know will be murdered. Next, the pretty girl involved comes to Perry with a legal problem of some kind. The nasty guy gets killed and Tragg arrests the pretty girl who fortunately is already Perry's client. Perry tells Della to call Paul and have him investigate. Paul's first report starts with "Perry , you are not going to like this. Undaunted, Perry cooks up a strategy to defend the client, often involving a demonstration of some kind. Trial begins. Paul reports back with good news. Perry gets real murderer on the stand and forces him/her to confess.
@chuckhoffman86803 жыл бұрын
You can always tell who the murderer is going to be. If there is an actor in the show who eventually becomes famous, he is usually the murderer. Otherwise it is the most unlikely person.
