Israelis sometimes disguise themselves as medical staff too, which is the flip side of the Geneva convention covering medical workers and facilities. Sometimes in the same mission! A couple of months ago, some death squad killed someone in a hospital in the West Bank (the headline didn't specify which branch of the military octopus carried out the attack, or on whom -- he was just described as a "militant" in the headline. The headline encapsulated the whole event as a "bold raid". I know the American press is perverse, but I couldn't believe that one; they dressed up like doctors, snuck into a hospital, murdered a patient (people receiving medical treatment are patients, whether they're militants or not: otherwise the legal protection for military medics would make no sense), and snuck out, and it didn't seem to occur to any of the reporters that Japanese soldiers were hanged for far less. I'll leave the real discussion for ethicists and military lawyers, but if it's possible to "waive" protections on medical assets, there's an argument to made that Israel has done exactly that, either by systematically destroying Palestinian doctors, ambulances, and hospitals, or by disguising members of the military as medical workers covered by the Geneva conventions.

One possible reason the Palestinian soldiers are not taking down the choppers is something my father told me, a wounded soldier takes up more resources, more medics, more food and need more care, thus reducing the available fighting force. I also think the Palestinians do respect the frontline IDF when they fight face to face, like men.
