When I was in (1982-1985), I automatically got my E-2 and E-3 just like you mentioned. My sergeant at the time told me to go and buy the rank insignia and wear it. We really didn't have promotion ceremonies/orders for those ranks back then. Also, the Army still had the rank of Specialist 5 (E-5) at that time. It was not considered an NCO and the rank was eliminated in October 1985, which at that time all Sp5's automatically became Sergeants.

back in the 60s and 70s they even had specialist all the way up to E-9. What made this rank funny was you had basically no authority past the people in your direct unit that were NOT NCOs or officers; A "two stripe" Corporal has more command authority then a "Specialist 9". Fortunately, the army realized how stupid those ranks were and got rid of the senior enlisted specialist ranks in the early 70s and got rid of all "NCO" level Spec ranks by the early 80s but it would be funny to see a young 20 year old Corporal to be bossing around a 45 year old Specialist 9.
@jrooksable2 жыл бұрын
At one time there were Specialist ranks all the up to E-9, and at that time ALL NCO grades outranked ALL Specialist grades, so an E-5 Sergeant outranked a specialist 9 even tho the Sp-9 had the exact same TIS TIG as a CSM, in the words of Top Lee, "that was bullshit & gunsmoke"!🤣

there are ways of breaking that early promotion requirements by meeting certain requirements at boot camp and AIT. I have heard of quite a few instances where people were promoted to PFC before 6 months or even specialist after just a year in the Army. But once you get to your unit and have passed up those early promotion opportunities in early training, you are pretty much going to be bound by those early promotion requirements unless you do something extra special like win Soldier of the Quarter or a Best Warrior competition.

We do thing differently in the Canadian Army/Navy/Airforce (Combined Service) First we do not have the up and out attitude, as a much smaller military consisting of 97,625 Members including the Primary Reserves, we do not have the numbers. This number includes all three services. When we enlist we first sign for a Three to Five Year Contract (Depending on your Military Occupational Component (MOC)) at the end of your first contract you may be offered either another Three to Five Year Contract or an Indeterminate Period of Service (IPS) for 25 Years. At the end of the IPS date, you may then be offered a Indeterminate Engagement (IE), which allows you to remain to Age 60. After the 25 Year mark you may retire with an unpenalized Pension, based on years served and the Best Five Years of your Salary (Usually the last five Years of your Career). If for some reason you are not offered either the IE or IPS, you are automatically released (retired) from service upon completion of your contract. As far as Promotions are concerned you have an automatic promotion from Pte to Cpl (E1 to E4) after a period of 4 Years, this promotion is also dependent upon whether you have been offered either an contract extension or an IPS. After this period your advancement in rank is solely dependent on your Performance Evaluation Report (PER) and the current Promotion Openings within your trade for that year. You must serve an Minimum of Two Years in Rank (E1 to E4) and a Minimum of Four to Five Years in Rank (E-5 to E9) before your PER goes in front of the Merit Board. It not uncommon in the Canadian Forces to see Cpls with 25 Years of service or more. Advancement in Rank is also dependent on Rank openings, for example if your Trade is small there are fewer Rank opening s as people have a tendency to stay longer, which means fewer promotions. I use an example from my former Trade at that time. I knew an individual who was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (E-9 equivalent) that person still had 14 years left to serve on their contract which means that they locked up that rank, denying the chance for those below them to move up and since we only had two CWO's in the Trade that reduced the chances of promotion. This effect would then trickle down to the lower Ranks of Master Warrant Officer (E-8) and to a lesser extent the Warrant Officers (E-7), meaning that you literally had to wait for someone to either retire or die to open up the ranks. Again it was not uncommon to see individuals in these ranks with 25 Years or more of Service. Lawrence Tierney Warrant Officer (Ret)

When being Promoted, Leaders/Leadership, Should Have A discussion, If that Person Is Capable of or Should Be Able to Move to A Higher Grade, if Not, Should Not be Upgraded, because they are not Up to Standard !

Its irrelevant because they show a willingness to participate and work the army lifestyle by staying in the army without being discharged. Also they hold no significant responsibilities, as SPC's or PFC's must show all of what you just said to receive the rank of Corporal, the only non-NCO rank to gain leadership responsibilities.

Hey odd question how does an army scholarship work?
@barrettboese41643 жыл бұрын
For Army ROTC, you would apply for it though the Army to a school with ROTC. They have 4 year, 3 year, and 2 year awards. This means that the Army would pay for your tuition in full and give you a stipend of $420 a month, with $600 for book money. You could change out that tuition money for the Army to pay room and board. But most people choose the tuition. It’s a pretty sweet deal. If you don’t win a scholarship before you head off to the university, if you join ROTC you will have a chance to win a scholarship after your first year. That’s what happened to me. I’m currently on a 3 scholarship and I was awarded that after my freshman year. I hope this answers your question. If not let me know and I’ll try to clarify.

E6 to E7, E7 to E8, and E8 to E9 known as the centralized promotion board used to have their records reviewed a by a promotion board to review their records. The NCOS do not have to appear before a panel as done when a E4 goes to the E5 board and a E5 goes to the E6 board. But E7 to E9 promotion boards are given the NCOs records where NCOs were given a grade point system of 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 by each voting board member. the board would look at DA Photos, the NCOs OMPF as well as NCOERS and are reviewed by a panel of CSMs, SGMs and one officer over the voting panel. NCOs, if selected, are based on the graded points given by the voting panel. and how many slots for promotion based on that MOS. the NCO will be then awarded a sequence number which was given based on the points awarded by the board panel and the time in grade and time in service of that NCO. Now its changed to a OML point system of how many NCOs are in the MOS from most qualified to the least qualified, A NCO can check their ranking number in their AKO accounts to see where they rank. E6 to E7 promotion or OML review board happens every February of that year, E8 to E9 promotion review panel happens every June. and E7 to E8 every October. NCOs non selected for promotion are usually told by the their leadership and usually a AAR of board results and available on the HRC website and NCOs can look to see where in their careers they are progressing and where they are falling short. Leadership time may not be enough. so many variables can fall into play as to why some NCOs make E7, E8 and even E9 and as to why some NCOs never get passed E6.
