La paz waterfall gardens and Místico hanging bridges are private places that is why it was more expensive than the other turist attraction run by the government. actually your trip was cheap for our country prices, every country in Central America is different we make more money there for we pay more, it is all about the exchange rate for each country but it is expensive to live in Nicaragua or Honduras for someone that makes their living with their currency, for me expensive is to travel to South and North America, Europe etc cause we have to switch from colones to usd or euros but I understand the point of your video and I'm thankful you came here and helped our economy 👍🏽Pura Vida

Costa Rica is super expensive if you compare it to the rest of latin america, this is due to the fact the country has been marketed as a premium destination and that the minimal wage of the country is 531USD for non qualified workers, but for qualified workers is around 700USD. as a tip, our tap water is completely safe to drink (even better than in developed countries) so you can bring your bottles and fill them up with tap water and enjoy.

If you are on a budget you can easily lower those costs, specially in food, if you go to any small local "sodas" it can be around $8 per meal, per person. Same can be said about hotels (cheaper are called "cabinas" which are like tiny little affordable apartments), and I honestly would recommend using Uber to move around if you are not making any long trips around the country.

Ps my grandparents live there and we went there in 2015, 2018 but my mom wants to go for Christmas 2019 (maybe not sure 🤔) I’m 20 y/o btw and loved it. Zip lining was fun and La Boya too (small water park 5 Dallas to get in was fun) as well as (forgot name) covering yourself in mud.

If you go to the Carribean side it can be much, much less expensive. For instance, the large National Seashore Park at Cahuita, which is a very beautiful beach town, is just a couple of bucks to enter. Lots of animals to see and beaches to enjoy. Good typical meals are around five bucks. The hotels there are about $30 to $40. Locals are friendly, and guides for snorkeling/boat trips and hikes are very reasonable. One of the most active volcanoes is Vulcan Turrialba. The town at the base of the volcano is also called Turrialba, which is a small city which is more like CR in years gone by. "Real Tico and real Pura Vida", as my friend says. Turrialba is also the country's "headquarters" for world class rafting on the gorgeous wild rivers there. Hotels in Turrialba are cheaper by maybe ten bucks. Also, located in Turrialba is the famous agriculture research university, CATIE. Very nice botanical gardens. The Guayabo National Monument (ancient Indian ruins) is located nearby. Many beautiful waterfalls to see in the Turrialba area (for no charge), and friendly local Ticos are happy to help you find them. Overall, the whole Carribean experience is much more traditional and simple than the Pacific-side "Americanized" tourist traps. BTW . . . the vegetation on the Carribean side of the country is always lush and green year round (no oppressive dry season), and the climate is much more mild and pleasant. BTW #2 . . . the trip from San Jose to the Carribean beaches (on a very comfortably modern bus) only costs about five bucks. BTW#3 . . . I'm not in the CR tourist business. This is just my objective observations of the possibilities after having been all over the country a number of times. Great little country to visit! Oh yes . . . BTW#4 . . . the only problem we've ever had with crime in CR is pick pocketing in San Jose. Stay away from San Jose, and if you must visit there, for God's sake stay away from the whore house areas. Prostitution is legal in CR, but involvement in that sort of entertainment can be VERY costly and dangerous!!! LOL. Que le vaya bien!

I would look into Airbnbs next time, if you plan to go. I did this and my hotel cost for the entire week I was there was only 55$. That included breakfast. Now I know you were moving city to city, but Airbnbs have some of the more reasonable prices along with more honest people running them.

Awesome video! I am from Costa Rica and live in the U.S.A. everytime I return to my beautiful and incredible country, it gets more and more expensive. It has become a tourist trap. Groceries are incredibly expensive. You pay for alcohol/beer the same prices you pay in the U.S. it saddens me to see what it is happening to my country. If you go, make sure to take a lot of cash!

As a Costa Rican, I can say that my country is quite expensive, mainly because of the purchasing power that we have, for example, being a doctor my salary is very similar to a US doctor, and in general we pay double or triple what it costs in other countries. Comparing my salary with a doctor in Spain is double. From my trip to Europe I even thought it was cheaper than my own country. Even for Ticos being a tourist in our country is expensive.

Overall you did well for your first trip (I assume that was)- those prices are much better than what I paid on my first trip or two 15 years ago. The hotels you can find much cheaper than $44, at least in San Jose. I am going there this Friday and usually where I stay in downtown San Jose, the rate is $20 a night. If you find a hotel online or from a tourist desk at the airport, they charge far more. It is better to just walk in or call few hotels directly. was that Hotel Santo Tomas that you showed us in the photos? I spend at least that much per day because I drink a lot,. Here what I spend (San Jose prices): 1) Hotel room w/t private bath, tv and wifi = $20 per night, or $100 per week 2) lunch = $5-$6 3) Beer (at the bars) $2 to $2.5 4) Bus ride to the central pacific (Quepos, Manuel Antonio) = $10 - $12 (each way, once per trip) 5) City buses 40 cents to $1 (airport bus is the most expensive and is $1) 6) Taxi to airport = about $20 ( I only take them if I have early morning flight or late arrival at night). Buses run until 10PM.

@@JumpingPlaces Hi there, yes you are right there are a lot of hotels there. This time I will be down there for 10 days. The longest I had stayed there was 9 months. On average, about a month around Xmas. One point I was trying to make is, if you cut your accommodation cost down, then you can stay much longer. Great report by the way and I am glad you had a good time there (again I am assuming that was the case!). For anyone that needs info on their first trip, I suggest they stop by any of the gringo bars around the Holiday Inn, downtown, San Jose. There are always friendly expats more than eager to give you their take on just about anything Costa Rica related.

What he failed to mention that lots of the hotels/attractions are foreign owned. That what has driven the prices up. My family is from CR, n prices have skyrocketed for the last 25 years. But it’s a very beautiful place. In order not to spend lots of $, you have to look around and bargain with the people. Yes, bargain.

Great video. We spent 10 days there. Rented a house, cooked 2 meals in and ate 1 meal out. I had a family of 5. Food is expensive. We spent anywhere from $75 to $125 US each time. Burgers and fries about $16. Even groceries can be expensive if you don’t buy local non brands. Many beaches you might have to pay too.

My husband and I went to Costa Rica 4 years ago, all inclusive (Airfare, Hotel Wyndham - Herradura , Breakfast, P/U at the airport) for $560 each. Then we rented a car in Dollar for $360 a week 4X4 Mitsubishi Montero and we didn't buy insurance there, we used our American Express travel insurance that's included when you rent a car. Oh, we bought our package in Expedia.

Ok, first... Santa ana is one of the most expensive areas to stay, 40% of the people there are foreigners, the same thing with Escazu, a lot of rich people lives there. Now in Costa Rica we get Titi or Yuplon, those are web sides where you can buy excellent discounts for your vacation. Gas is expensive so at least you want to us the public transport that is actually really good, get the idea that gas is expensive. Food if you can ask for the share dishes becomes a lot cheaper.

They clammer away with their "free food" perks then you go the markets there and see food for 1/10 what it costs back home. Then you know you've been totally had. If you decide to travel to CR, please under no circumstance reserve any rental car, or make a reservation at Hotels (even Airbnb) because they'll rip you off badly. You better off looking at the CR local pages in renting a condo for like $600 than renting a single room for $1200 at the hotel for about month. Also its easier to navigating by taking Uber to some places in the 4 main provinces. I can say that prices of food is quite related at the US prices which is quite expense for your budget.The real quality food is at the Mercado and Sodas (family restaurants) which is very yummy and good quality food. In summary: Expensive: Food, hotels, renting a car, buying a car, CLOTHING! Inexpensive: Rent, Dental, Medical, Real State.

They have 30-100% importation tax. It's up to their customs to decide how much to tax. You mail $100 item there you pay $30 shipping for example, then they nay charge $30-$100 tax on it. So a $100 item may cost $200 or $230.

Of course it was expensive you went to most expensive places , and also they gave you Gringo prices , you can get much much cheaper everything , Rent hotel room or some house with kitchen (renting some house beach can get much cheaper) and buy food in Pricesmart MasxMenos or Maxipali, dont go all time to restaurants they are expensive dont rent car it is ridiculously expensive rent bike yes gas is expensive But all in all it is country with highest standard in Latin America so of course it will be more expensive

How was car rental so expensive? We are going to rent a car in October and we will be paying 477 euros for 18 days, about 26,5 euros a day. Including insurance, excess paid of and deposit paid of for a huge part. Very interesting video though because I feel like we are going to look for things at about the same price range. I was worried food would be way more expensive. We are staying in some pretty excluded places so I feel like it will be more expensive there and we are staying one night in a luxury hotel so it'll be more expensive too but if the main bulk of the day I'd pay 22 dollars per person for food I would be pretty pleased.

I live in CR, do not rent cars at the airport it is better to rent a car outside of the airport on the other hand if you are going to stay at the city the best option to move around the city is Uber. By the way I do use Airbnb always.

@@jonahwillard9021 It is really safe but I do prefer the South of the country like Pavones (Golfito) or the North Guanacaste. It depends if you want to know like real country (almost virgin beaches) you need to go to Pavones or Playa Zancudo the trip takes ages but worth it. If you want just something more like relax and simple vacations you don't need to fly to the capital but to Liberia (Guanacaste) and spend your time in the beaches there.

Not staying in hotels in USA for 40.00 .... lucky if a campground cost that. If you stay out of hotels food is about 6.00 a plate. Didn’t mention your flight ? Where were you flying from ... for me in Florida it’s 250 r/t 3 hour flight compare that to within state flying like nyc Chicago Denver Dallas it would be over 300 r/t.

Not really if you compare it to other places in the central american region, we find places around 11-15 dollars in many of the other countries. Not many cheap options for backpackers from what we saw in costa rica

Those expensive parks are not public parks , they are private companies trying to get money ... The cheap national parks are public and all the money that they collect is invested on the protection of the flora and fauna of the zone... I always recomend: Public national parks ... I love la fortuna , Manuel Antonio ( in my opinion is the best national park of Costa Rica) and monteverde ...Thanks for visiting my country , we appreciate it , it helps a lot our economy and the protection of the nature ...

That is expensive. I see some people on here trying to say it isn't, but that is expensive. $11 a meal for that kind of place? Forget it. No way. I'd rather just go in a grocery and buy some oranges or something. And those parks for $40? LOL, like I might ever. Go to a free beach, take some hikes along the shoreline. See the country, don't see their tourist traps.

Good video although I disagree in some of your opinions. Costa Rica may be expensive for "some" people but the states is still way more expensive than Costa Rica, Food is better and cheaper, you indicated that in an average you spent $11 per meal , you will spend way more than that in a McDonnal's in the states (or any fast food place). Hotels, are very decent and clean and extremely reasonable, you will never find a hotel in the states at that price. I would recommend next time to stay away from the traditional Car Rentals, they are a rip off. There are many 'off brand" rentals that would have cost you half of what you paid (insurance included). The parks are very expensive for Tourist (although they are worthwhile) for a park you paid like $15 a Tico (or a resident) only pays about 1/3 of that price. Gas is very expensive. However, if you are going to stay in CR more that a week, I recommend Public transportation, it is on time and very reliable (and cheap!!). You have to go back and used what you learned in your previous trip. You will find out that it is expensive but way, way cheaper than the states. ah!!! people are GREAT!!! the Ticos are very welcoming culture and will make you feel at home.

Hey Carlos, Thanks for the great feedback! Yes I think its because I expected a central american country to be much cheaper than the US so it surprised me a bit, when i travel here in the US i can usually find hotels for around 40-50 US$. You are correct that the food is cheaper than the US for the quality that you are getting there for sure, for quality food like that you would probably have to pay $15-25 in the US or more even. Thanks for the advice about the car, I will definitely look for off brand rentals as that was one of my biggest costs, and if I have more time to explore I will definitely just use public transport as I wont be in much of a rush :) I loved it there for sure, one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been to :D

@@JumpingPlaces There is a place that rents 4x4 (old models, like 4 or 5 years old) in GREAT shape and real cheap. I think it is called 4x4 Rentals or something like that. I do not know if you experience the fruits down there, they are BIG, fresh and extremely sweet, and cheap

I guess I expected to be able to travel there cheaper than I can here in the US but I couldn't and I was basically selecting all the cheapest hotels possible. Mainly the car rental and some of the parks kicked my ass price wise...hotels and food wasn't too bad really

All travel is expensive. Try travelling on the cheap in the US. The cost of eating in restaurants is very expensive, All the hotels in major towns/cities are either crap places or expensive.

Yeah US is also expensive, but not everywhere is expensive... you can go to some places in Central America, Southeast Asia and South America and travel very cheaply

I've been living in Costa Rica for 8 years and trust me it's very expensive. The only things that are cheaper than the states are property taxes, electricity and rent. Other than that expect to come out your pockets. Anything imported is double the price of the states. This guy actually did quite well as far as hotels because the budget hotels I stayed at nail you.

@@JumpingPlaces Everything is relative. I assume your from the UK? So for you it probably doesn't seem extremely expensive. I am from Miami Florida which in the U.S. is very expensive. To give you an example. My house in Miami cost me $120,000 and was built in 2006. The property taxes are around $6,000 a year. In comparison a $120,000 house in Costa Rica can be a 30 or more year old run down house. The appealing thing here is that your property taxes will be no more than a couple hundred dollars a year. To rent this house would run you about 400-500 dollars a month. My house in Miami is between 1,000 and 1,800 dollars a month. With no AC in the house the electric bill will be around $70 or less a month. My house in Miami with AC which is vital in the summer is typically between 150-200 dollars a month. Oh I forgot to mention that car insurance is also a lot cheaper. I have a 2004 Fiat Palio and pay 22,000 colones a month. That's about 40 dollars more or less. As I said before, that's it as far being cheaper than the states. Gas as you found out is outrageously expensive. Each year you must pay a right to circulate or "Marchamo" for your automobile. The amount is based on the fiscal price of your vehicle. I pay about $200 each year since my car is valued at about $4000. Beef and seafood is pretty much a luxury for most people so rice and beans are the staple of the Tico diet as it is more accessible. So there you have some info. Any other questions I'd be happy to answer.

We have public healthcare which is definitely a plus. We have great public universities which are basically free. Rent prices are cheaper than big cities in the US but not cheap at all. A nice 1 bedroom apartment in an upscale town in San Jose will set you back at least $900-1100. Buying a car is at least 30-40% more expensive(a full extras 2019 AWD Toyota Rav4 costs 40k lol). 3-4 star Hotels in "tourist towns" are insanely expensive. Have been living here my entire life, and I am a dual citizen (US/CR). You obviously save a ton on taxes if living outside the US but you get this benefit in any other country. You can probably live in Thailand for half the $ amount.

I have heard a lot about the rainy seasons. It seems u are saying I need to take that into consideration. The beaches are primary to me (born in Jamaica now living in Florida) . I am choosing Manuel Antonio because I read the best beaches are on the West side. In Florida, it (almost) rains daily. But it stops and then it gets humid (which I love) Is that my expectations for Manuel Antonio. If u would do it again what months would u go? Sorry to be asking but thanks

I don't understand WHY ANYONE would expect to pay close to nothing to visit one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES ON EARTH!!! Here in the US, going to Orlando, would cost you abt $100 per person per day and the place is pretty expensive. Try Las Vegas!! IF YOU ARE A CHEAPO, STAY HOME!!!! It seems, you can't even afford food in whatever country you are from..Whenever I have been to Costa Rica, I use my Amex Platinum, so, I pay no auto insurance and on average, I stay at more high end places, where hotels are around $300 to $ 600na night. ITS a PARADISE!!!! WORTH EVERY CENT!!!
