People need to realize that in the end, it's almost cheaper to live anywhere in Europe than in America. Sure, you can make more in the US. However, all of the stuff we don't get taxed on, i.e., healthcare, and all the social services we wind up paying for. So it almost balances out. But in the end, it's your expenditures like food and going out that determines how much you will save/spend in the US. But quality of life is not going to be as good as it can be in Europe when taking safety, education, quality of life, etc.

The Netherlands might be expensive but you get a lot for it. Especially when you are not rich. Read an interesting report that stated that although the top 50% of Americans might be wealthier overall than people in The Netherlands, the bottom 50% is way poorer. And not just "poor" in terms of money, but more considering access to first class services like education, healthcare, healthy food, sporting facilities and all that. I would go as far as to say there are no "bad neighbourhoods" in the entire country. Less affluent sure, but they still feel like lower middle class I suppose. It doesn't really go below that.

Overal people do just fine if you are willing to work. There are indeed poor areas, I did some test and ask I have a job for you are you interested and yes you guessed it right I would say 99.99999% says no. Two sides to the poverty story. You dont work you cannot expect to live in a big fancy house.
@ageoflove198015 сағат бұрын
@@JoyceClarke-w2j But even these "poor" areas in The Netherlands get access to good infrastructure, like public transportation and cycling lanes. At least decent schools. Healthcare doesn't really matter where you live and a park and at least some sort of sports facilities are never far away. Fresh produce is available everywhere so no food deserts or anything like that. So even though the area may be poor, its still technically middle class because regardless of income, people there have access to all the typical middle class facilities ive mentioned.

Literally at the beginning of just considering moving our family of 4 from Atlanta to NL. Two kids (3 & 7) and currently single income ~$160k/yr. Would love to see something similar for family life in other cities like Haarlem, Hilversum, Utrecht, or outside the Ranstad, even though I know it’s not your specific experience. Or even just something talking about transitioning from a US salary to a NL salary - this was super interesting and I really appreciate the cross-section and comparisons!
@hi.davidwenКүн бұрын
Thanks! Yeah I considered adding more to the analysis but figured I want to talk about what I personally know. But I do know plenty of families here (from the US)...and The Netherlands is a great place for families. So I went from San Francisco salary to NL salary...which was a big transition psychologically (decrease). It took me a while to adapt to that...but I realized I was just comparing numbers. I had a good salary in Amsterdam, and my quality of life has been quite high (in my opinion). For example, you'll probably have a lot more time (eg. vacation days/work-life balance) and if you value travel, it's quite affordable to travel around Europe even with families. I've talked to several American-Dutch families...their kids are older in high school...and they will attend Dutch university (tuition is a lot cheaper so they save A LOT in costs). Anyways, good luck on the research process!

@@hi.davidweni think he refered to Maastricht having 'stadsrechten' up until about 1850 , when city rights were no longer an official legal thing. Until then only towns with stadsrechten/city right were allowed to be named stad/city. One of those city rights was permission to build a city wall. Only after 1851 stad (city) became mostly an indicator of size. Many cities that used to have city rights in the past take pride in that, and still proudly name their town a city, to connect to their history. The smallest of those cities is Bronkhorst, it got city rights in 1482, but never grew past it's medieval centre. It now has about 100 inhabitants and is a kinda popular tourist destination. If you want more examples of smaller towns that are (were) cities look into 'starforts'. There are quite a lot. Edit: oops, this reply got a bit longer than i realised. Also: sorry for my questionable english. Hope i didn't cross the line between Denglish and Dunglish.😂

The combination of no one wanting to hire you and everything being absurdly expensive really sucks to live in. It's a miracle I'm allowed to loan enough as a student to survive in a rented room (not an apartment). My debt is going to be so bad once im done with school that i doubt I can find a place to sleep that isn't the street. For added context: I don't have any family to lean on in this country, and that's a huge setback. It seems that housing is the biggest problem, especially in Amsterdam. The city is physically tiny and has a small town mentality. The PR-image is living close to canals within cycling or walking distance. So, everybody wants to live in the center, which is already built up. Hence the demand is growing, but supply stays barely the same. And reputation of outskirts does not allow to house all those wanna-be-amsterdammers in Nieuw-West or Zuid-Oost. So, many decide to double or even triple down on the centrally located property.

In The Netherlands people typically focus on costs, whereas in the US (or other parts of the globe, such as SE Asia), people focus on opportunity. In The Netherlands people focus on being average (doe maar normaal), whereas in the US, SE Asia and Australia, people focus on getting the most out of oneself, ambition. That’s why I left The Netherlands and moved to where the ambition is the standard and people work on opportunities. And guess what: income exponentially increases and costs are well under control. When you are young and single, living in the city center is essential to make connections and start your adult life (don't be a homebody). 😉 While I have lived in major cities in America where a car is not required/necessary, having access to a car is an expense I have not been able to remove. When you are of a 'certain age' those days when the weather is bitter cold, rainy, and windy, the convenience of stepping into a clean, comfortable car with heat, heated seats and music makes any at-the-moment chore easy. Life can be cruel when 'Father Time' causes those joints to be sore or you are not feeing 100%. I'd gladly trade a Netflix account + a few more items to keep my 15+ year old city car close to hand. There are times (more often than not) where public transport is so over crowded in Amsterdam where I have paid for a private car to get me home out of sheer frustration.

For example I am a project manager in real estate develooment and mine gross income is about 82.000 euros annualy, but my net salary per month is around 3500 euros. According to your table I should be earning around 63.000 gross annualy or around 4200 euro net monthly. I wish the last one was true 😁. We pay around 37% taxes for income till 76.000. Everything above that we pay 49,5% of taxes.
