Isn’t engineering fun? Jeremy Fielding and I had a blast with the mad batter, and it looks like you guys had fun with the batcopter! The sounds of that thing brought back terrifying memories. Congratulations guys! May God continue to bless your efforts. P.S. Stay safe and pile some dirt up in front of that container!

The Batcopter was built to be able to hit all sorts of stuff which is why it’s so big! Yes we wanted to hit a ball farther than Destin but that was only the Batcopter’s first challenge. We wanted to make a versatile machine that could also hit larger/heavier balls like basketballs, soccer balls etc really far so we can do even harder challenges. This is why in the engineers simulations it shows those bigger balls and not baseballs. Lots more cool stuff coming from the Batcopter everyone, how good!

I've been working in the mechanical design/engineering/manufacturing field for over 15 years, including time spent in aerospace around US military weapons components, and I have never heard anything like the sound that the Batcopter makes when it connects. In context that is one of the most terrifying noises I have ever heard a machine make. Pretty please, do more of this. Two thumbs way up.
@The_Keeper

The noise *is* terrifying (and awesome), but the dent in the "bat" is what worries me most. At 400rpm, the only way to describe what happens if it breaks/folds is; Catastrophic failure.

I love how even in the wide shots the trajectory is just.... Straight.... Absolute insanity. Cant help feeling this is a different record, being that Destin used regulation bats, but that doesnt detract from the engineering at all though!
@Kiba69420
@Kiba69420 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, theres got to be some sort of ruleset, otherwise you could just do any stupid thing that hits a ball and call it a home run. Not only did Destin do it with legal bats, but he also did it in a regulation field too, not that that makes TOO much difference, but it is what it is. Regulation bats from home base on a regulation field, vs... some crazy weird metal rod helicopter looking thing in a backwoods clearing. *shrug*

I would say the ball hit at a 1000 rpm bat would be far to expensive to do. The impact at that speed would destroy the bat, the ball probably would be damaged as well. And with the ball damaged hang time would be limited, so I would say a ball smacked at a 1000 rpm would go 3 80 and 424 meters. As on paper it could go 500 meter.

I love thinking about that too, think about the elastic reaction that would occur if they used a pitching machine at even 50mph in addition to bats or tubes spinning at such a insane rate of speed. It's crazy to think how much more velocity they can achieve by adding in some velocity on the other end. At that point we would have to consider even the structural integrity of the ball as I am sure the covers strings inside the baseball would begin to tear and split with such an intense elastic reaction. I'm honestly surprised they didn't have the covers come off a few of the baseballs they used in this videos already without having added velocity on the other end.

I strongly suspect its because these balls did not have any existing motion on them before hit, where as pitched baseballs have all sorts of motions on them depending on what the pitcher was pitching. combined with the often odd wind patterns of a ballpark.

Yeah, some crazy custom metal tube/rod thing made to look crazily like a helicopter, in a backwoods clearing... vs regulation bats from home base on a regulation field. My bet is that regardless of how far these guys knocked a ball, its A: not considered a home run... and B: wont qualify against destins. This is pretty neat though, but i really hate when people try to piggy back something and say its one thing, when its really not. =T

A lot of the energy created when hitting for distance comes from the speed of the pitch. A ball thrown with velocity can thus be hit farther than a lobbed one - Science with CS

It was so awesome see how far this thing hit the ball. But in all fairness to Destin's (and his engineering team's) record, he used an actual baseball bat; the batcopter just seems like a whole different category.

Exactly. The batcopter is great but Destin still hold's the record with a real bat and pitches coming from the front. The batcopter also adds extra upwards force to the ball from the start.

You guys should do a contest where you write different point values on the baseballs, (some positive, some negative) and have them fire out of the batcopter at random and catch them. You’ll never know if you’re catching a positive or negative value ball. It’d be a blast to watch!
