I've driven through Europe and driven in America. UK drivers are the literal worst in the world when it comes to using the inside lane when not overtaking. It's some really weird arrogance that people in the UK have, where they don't believe anyone should be able to overtake them, so they deliberately drive slowly in the outside lane, especially on dual-carriage ways resulting in queues for everyone. If you tried that in Hungary, you would be rammed off the road and/or dragged out of your car for some re-education 🤣

Nice motor, had the X-type awd 2.5 petrol for 7 years. Now spent 13k on a mint condition BMW 6 Gran coupe 640d and averaging 38mpg mostly round town and driving it how I like. I intend to keep it nice for a good 5-10 years before I buy my next motor. Don't get why anyone would lease a car and never own it.

Hi Geoff, i ran one of these Jags for a week short of 12 years, it finally died in an accident with 230k on the clock. It was a sad day but it didnt die in vain, it took a Mazda with it! My target economy was always 650 miles to reading proper empty which it would achieve without having to drive like a granny. I never ran it out so i dont know how much is left at that that point?? Refilling it would see me put in the claimed tank capacity so it must be pretty close!!

@@monkeyjim9398 haha, it's a bit more nuanced than that :) I've long supported bangernomics as one option to run a car. On our old Volvo (over 300k miles), converted to LPG it'll do around 26mpg on LPG which at just less than half the price of petrol makes it about 56mpg petrol equivalent. We had it converted a long long time ago because there was nothing wrong with the car, just that the 28mpg petrol was starting to get annoying. Fast forward a couple of decades and it's still going, everything still works and when we bought it, we had no children so when the sales guy demo'd the integrated child seat, we never expected to put two children through it and in a year or two, grandchild will fit. This car and the others cost me next to nothing as most of the maintenance i'll do so it's just minimal running costs. The main reason for getting an EV (Tesla) was to buy into current safety features that don't exist on 28 or 48 year old cars among our selection. The pure economics don't make sense other than the car is mostly funded by solar panels FIT scheme. We do plan to keep it though long term, time will tell whether self driving is approved in our lifetime or not - who knows but my interest in driving has diminished more recently, clogged roads and too many knobheads. Keeping the older cars on the road is still a hobby though and i'm fully in support of those wanting to do so. So bear with me if I push back on some of the anti EV narrative, I see both sides :)

You gotta love a good diesel car. I have a high mileage 2004 Passat TDi. Last week I travelled from Cheshire to the Scottish Highlands, toured around many a single track road, and back home via motorway. 1212 miles in total, and achieved an average of 43.6 mpg. I shal run my old diesel for as long as it's roadworthy or the ******** ban diesel fuel.

I used to be a Trade Plate Driver back in 2010, most petrol and diesel cars will allow you to drive even when empty 15-20 miles before coming to a complete stop. The Austin TX1 taxi is the exception when the needle goes into the red that's it, time to refill.

My 2006 spec X Type 2.0 SD 5 speed estate will regularly do 50+ mpg with little effort. I used to check the fuel use by brimming the tank to a mark in the filler neck and comparing the amount of fuel needed to top up, to the mileage I'd done. They can be a pig to prime if you do let the tank run dry.

We already knew the answer to this. Top Gear did it when it was new (Clarkson era). It's about 800 miles when they did London to Edinburgh and back on one tank.

And they did that economy race from Europe to Blackpool and Clarkson had that Jaguar XJ which he thought would run out of fuel literally where he lived (he tried everything to kill his fuel economy as well). It didn't run out of fuel and he made it to Blackpool with Richard Hammond in the VW Polo Bluemotion. James was that slow in the diesel Subaru he never arrived.

I used to get 45mpg on my 1994 Mercedes s124 3 litre normally aspirated 4 speed auto diesel estate and on a 70 litre tank, would get around 700 miles out of the tank on long continental trips. 30 years later, my petrol Mercedes s205 2 litre petrol 7 speed auto gets around 850 miles of of a 65? litre tank. That's 30 years of progress.

Depends on what power output they have some of the older Vespa's and scooters from old can go on a motorway as they can keep up with the speed of the majority of the traffic. The scooter in this video really shouldn't have been on the motorway as its limited on speed.

Be parting company shortly with my X type diesel, it has been a real displeasure owning it, so many faults in the last two years, including binding brakes, pulley noise, now a hot starting issue, all common issues with these, never found it economical and the seat is really uncomfortable on a long journey, I have the 18” alloys that are prone to cracking, replaced 2 last year, shame because I really liked it when I got it, however it does shift really well when you boot it. If you get one, immediately take all the wheel and security nuts off the wheels and bin them, replace with none Jaguar ones, that was another expensive and long tale where I nearly scrapped it because I was so pissed off with it

Yes, just sold my 2010 2.0 TDCI Mondeo, and having run out of fuel back in 2017 (fuel gauge got stuck on a trip back from Scotland to Suffolk) it fired straight back up once a 20L jerrycan was added. The last 10 miles before running out, it did “cough” or “stutter” once or twice, but then it just stopped - gauge was still showing 1/4 tank, but I’d done 640 miles since filling up. Amazing car, sadly I need something ULEZ compliant, so it’s going to a new home and I’ve bought a (Euro 6 diesel) Jag.

@@steve5772 shame they don’t make them like they used to, my 2000 Fiesta 1.8 TDdi had a priming bulb I think, was young and being a student didn’t have much money, still never changed the diesel filter 🫣 had a cambelt at 121k miles when I bought it at 2.5 years old and oil changes every year or 8-10k miles done myself, did brakes, discs, wheel bearings myself. Gave little bother and only saw a garage for jobs I didn’t feel up to myself. Did shear the bolts that attach the alternator to the engine and drove it back from town with the belt hanging half off slowly, taught me how to tap and die threads and replaced the bolts with better quality ones and changed the belt. Cambelt wise it was all good as it’s a non interference engine 👍🏼. Made it to just shy of 200,000 miles when I last checked mot, the corrosion on the back arches was starting to take hold and it was time to move it on. Reg was X233EBD was one hell of a car considering it cost £8-9k new and 200k miles out of it

Near start of video. Running out of diesel in a tdci. We had a mondeo 2.0tdci same engine I believe. Ran out. Couldn't bleed it nothing was working. In the end as a last ditch attempt we towed it at 30mph behind a pickup truck for about 3 miles in gear and it finally spluttered back into life. Was fine after that. So they can go again but their a bugger.

I've also done the 600+ trip in a diesel but we both passed multiple opportunities to refuel so what exactly is the problem that's being solved by carrying fuel that itself needs fuel to carry. Long range gives convenience, saves times and means you can cover more of the continent. Sitting for an hour to charge an EV is just asking to be taking advantage of by some robbers awaiting at the charging point, I wouldn't want to sit in a transitional space for more than 5mins with a car..that is so sought after.

That yellow Daimler Double-six Vandem Plas in the jag graveyard is very rare - I think about 300 were ever made. My dad had one as the family car for 25 years, many happy memories driving 6-up (plus the dog) from South London to Ireland for the summer holidays. He ended up banger racing it and myself and my 3 siblings helped prep it and paint it with him. Good times. There's a video of him doing his stuff on youtube (search for "Jaguar banger race" - he won that race and many others including the world championship a couple of times)

This was great, very informative, I'm looking at getting a Jaguar x-type 2.2 diesel, so I'm going to assume the results here will be relatively similar. Question for Geoff (or anyone who knows cars), I'm looking at getting a Jaguar x-type 2.2 diesel, though most have upwards of 160,000 miles on them, from what I can tell it's not much of an issue, but I'm a new driver and not too savvy with this stuff. What I'm asking is basically, is it okay to buy a used Jag, as mentioned, that has so many miles already on it? I plan on driving it for the next few years and will almost certainly be putting a fair few miles on it daily. Thanks for any advice in advance. Love the Jag's, I'm all but set on buying one, just treading with caution before taking the plunge and spending money, but theyre at a good price imo!

Before that I could regularly get a long-term consumption (according to the car) of 3.1l / 100km which is 91 MPG. Now it's 3.3.

Also, I'll mention something weird... today my dad got 1 in the post today but from the council. When he got to the car he didn't see any ticket but on the letter it shows a picture of a ticket on his car! The exact same thing has happened to him 3 times now within 2 months. I just don't get how so many people are saying don't run it out of fuel. I had a Mondeo with a knackered fuel gauge, and beforevI fixed it I judged it wrong twice. Put some fuel in and after a few turns of the engine it started no problem. Any modernish diesel would.

Here is a challenge Geoff, Go on autotrader with a budget of £10,000, Find the best EV for that (most will be Zoes or Leafs that will do 155-180 mile range in summer) and then look what Diesel Euro6 Luxury Cars you can get, Ive seen a Jag Xe Rsport with 69,000 miles that will have no road tax, and do 64MPG Urban, 83MPG Extra Urban, 75MPG Combined, no brainer for those like myself who do a 155 mile journey to work once a week and then the return 5 days later, range of 640-860 miles

A Leaf or Zoe for that sort of use would be mind bendingly frustrating! I passed a woman on the M5 and met her again when she was charging at the services. We chatted and I said she was brave taking that on the motorway and we had a fun conversation. The problem there is that the only Leaf for that price point would be typically the 24kWh, maybe a 30kWh at a stretch and at best at 60mph, you'd get about 4 miles per kWh. So, that would be a max range of between 96 to 120 miles but the killer is that you wouldn't want to go below maybe 20 miles left and you wouldn't charge to more than 80% because the charge curve would make it too long to charge that 80 to 100%. So that means you're constantly driving within a range scope of about 15/20 miles to 70 miles. In other words, stopping every 50 miles to charge but then there's another kicker, you'd then get clobbered by charging infrastructure so you'd have to have a backup plan if the charging location was out of service or blocked. Just...NO! :)

Plotting Worcester (example) to Brighton (364 miles round trip) in ABRP yields 2 charges, 6 minutes at Gatwick on the way down and 21 mins on the return, again at Gatwick. So that's 27 minutes charging time. None of the other journeys would require a charge enroute.

As I've mentioned, before... my x-type 2.5v6 estate, on an 05 plate, that I've had for over 14 years... has been an amazing car! NEVER let me down and I paid £4,600 back then. Over 42 mpg with tons of tools / materials etc. I do not understand why people buy brand new cars as soon as you leave the forecourt, the value drops to much!

Someone told me that the RNLI were seeking tenders for vehicles and Mercedes came up with the cheapest/best offering but it had to be turned down as the "image" of a voluntarily funded organisation would be unlikely to survive the bad press of a "luxury" car manufacturer. Depends on the EV. A Tesla experience would be very different from a different EV. With the start and end point of each trip though, it can be planned and viewed with abetterrouteplanner and you'll get an idea. Not sure what the idea would be though because with an EV, you'd prepare by starting with it suitably charged. So a 350 mile trip would be one charge and anything under say 270 miles would be no charges. Not much point just watching a car do the same trip?
