During the 2000 Suzuka 8 Hours, Mamoru Yamakawa lost it at 130R, hit the foam barriers, and was pronounced dead on arrival from severe hemorrhaging. The Scottish driver you're thinking of was Toyota F1 driver Allan McNish; in 2002, he lost it over the bump on exit of 130R and pierced the Armco on the outside. He was ruled out of the race, but his injuries weren't serious. 130R was redesigned from a radius corner to its current double apex form after that. Kato lost it on the brakes over the same bump and hit the foam barriers on the left. For some inexplicable reason, race control didn't red flag the race, and the track workers just haphazardly loaded him onto a stretcher, which might've caused additional neck injury. Personally, I doubt he would've survived much longer even with better medical care - his official cause of death was brain stem infarction. As a last note, Motegi had already hosted 5 GPs by the end of 2003 - the Japanese GP in 1999 and the Pacific GP from 2000 to 2003.
