but can it run doom? in all seriousness this seems really cool! is it just gonna have controls like adsr, filters, envelopes, and basic oscillator shapes or will it be more advanced with FM and wavetables? i know theres only so much you can actually fit on a synth as small as that so idk

fun facts about custom shapes: 1) The motor acceleration time is the number of seconds it will take for the motor to ramp up to top speed. that will get rid of any sudden jerkiness with CS motors. 2) if custom shapes are starting to phase though stuff, increase their mass. for whatever reason, heavier shapes have better collision properties.

I never really thought about it but the way most game engines can't handle speeds above a few thousand shows a lot of room for improvement in software techniques.
@cerulity32k3 ай бұрын
There's a property on rigid bodies (commonly named bullet, precise, or continuous) that will make objects do multiple collision tests across physics steps at the cost of more processing time, so a small, fast moving object (like a bullet!) will not phase through a wall. Poly Bridge was _not_ meant to have stuff like this, so that property was not enabled.

Yo! Welcome back! I love the synthesizer thing, but if you don’t mind me asking, why did you decide to make it? I mean, it seems pretty far off from your usual content, and I never really related you with music. So how did you come up with this idea?
@ReidCaptain4 ай бұрын
I have a few music based videos on the channel, although its not a topic I can effectively make into a video as often as I'd like. I've always been frustrated by how much music equipment ends up being, so I wanted to create the kind of device I want to use; something fun, something easy, and something affordable.

So awesome you’re developing a synth! I would be happy to nab one of those upon release :) I can only imagine what got you into that. Music is beautiful and it’s all mathematics so this was probably a lot of fun for ya. If not a real challenge of blending hardware design intended to be comfortable and playable, with software that has run smooth and be intuitive.

So a problem with your catapult/trebuchet was that even though you made your trebuchet release at a good time, you didn’t release it at the best time. The trebuchet wasn’t really transferring all its energy into the bikes’s motion.

Nice! I made a similar design when I was testing out ways to launch custom shapes. It consisted of 16 maxed spinning motors. Which launched an 80 pg custom shape around 1000 km/h (625 mp/h). Accord to a dev comment 1 pg is 4 kg (8.8 lbs) meaning the projectile had similar kinetic energy to modern tank rounds. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it work without unbreaking for cables so I couldn’t do much. I have a version with cars instead which i posted on pb 3 workshop.

instead of adding more blocks you can just increase the weight of them by increasing how many "pg"s they are, and instead of adding more motors you can just increase the weight of the motor which massively increases the torque. Also custom shapes can have their own acceleration period not just trucks, you just need to set the "Motor Acc. Time" to a non zero number
@ReidCaptain4 ай бұрын
I set the weight to the max on each block, and the motor acceleration parameter works but I find it's a lot less gentle than the trucks since their wheels on the road ball in a way kinda act like a clutch

These are all pretty good methods, but I noticed a few flaws. I don't know if you did them off camera or not, but especially with the trebuchet idea, it wouldn't work as you'd expect because the ammunition in a trebuchet does not lie flat on the ground, it hangs perpendicular and gains momentum in a half circle. If you want a trebuchet sling to go 360 degrees around you have to make a sort of pendulum where there's an arm with a weight that spins around as the catapult is flung up and the trebuchet sling follows the inertia of the first swinging arm to gain massive momentum. However, this game's physics engine isn't designed for technical and precice movement like this, and neither mathematical theorems that makes it possible in the first place. Secondly: The scissor method you tried, launching the vehicle between two logs pushed together, did not work most likely because there was too small of an incline. If you ever try this again, angle the contraption 45 degrees and make a 60 degree scissor gap. Then make two nodes at the bottom of each log and hydraulic the rest so it slams down like scissors. If the physics engine allows it, you can most likely clear the map in 0.5 seconds on the slowest speed like this when the vehicle is airborne.

Can't you use splitjoints and hydraulic phases to time stuff to detach to launch at the correct timings to be able to time stuff better to get more force and better speed? I also wonder if you could make gears using the custom shapes to use gear ratio's to multiply the rotational force. You'll probably be able to hit the literal limit of the entire physics engine's ability to assign speed values if you could do that.
