Thanks for this video. It answers the question I had from a previous video about FEHB eligibility when you experience a break in service! Follow up question: what if you had FEHB, then had a break in service, but you kept FEHB for a time via COBRA? Does the time under COBRA count towards the five years?

USPS Employees receive a discount through their working years, and when they retire, the premiums double without the discount.

Dallen, we hear a lot about how having FEHB coverage is a significant additional federal retirement benefit, but how much would you estimate is the actual value of having FEHB coverage in retirement? I've never seen anything quantifying what that estimated value actually is compared to not having it. Seems to me if it's such a significant additional benefit there would be more written about/discussed about the estimated value. How much would you estimate the FEHB benefit value for someone eligible to keep coverage in retirement for an individual + one or family coverage over 25 years of retirement? TIA.

Ask folks from the private sector what they pay for health insurance in retirement. That will tell you everything.

I am a federal employee and FEHB Blue Cross Basic. I am 65 and have Medicare A & B and I get the $800 reimbursement from Blue Cross. I am also covered by Tricare because my husband is a retired veteran. My husband is 60 and not eligible for Medicare for 5 more years. He is covered by my FEHB and Tricare Select. How should I proceed into retirement? I hope to retire December 31, 2024. Thank you

I think you have to put your spouse on FEHB before death.... I am retiring in December 2023 and my wife has her own health insurance from her job which is an HSA... She will be working 5 more years and wants to keep it until she retires... I was told by my BEST specialist from Human Capitol from my agency that I can wait to put my wife on my FEHB anytime during my retirement BUT I would need to do it before kicking the bucket and passing away!!! 🤣

Thanks for the reply. But my wife has been on my FEHB coverage for the past 20 years... I don't need to add her to the policy because she is already part of it. I'm just trying to figure out if I die before I retire if she will still be covered. @@sfm45

If you’re retiring and have a FEHB eligible wife still working, you should suspend your FEHB and have your wife pick it up for the tax benefit he mentions. Then pick it back up when she retires.
