In Helsinki, Finland, a massive network of underground bunkers has been carved into the bedrock to shelter the population in an emergency. Some of the spaces are open to public use, with a pool, play areas, sports facilities and more.

I often play floorball in the one shown in the video. It is a cool place and I think it is good the bunker's can be used as multi-purpose sports facilities. There is even one with a swimming hall completed with slides and Itäkeskuksen uimahalli.

We need this in the uk, we are a primary target. We in the uk don't look at the long term and we realy need to start to we spent 100 billion on nuclear missiles but spend nothing on preparedness we need shelters not just for nuclear/ biological but anything. They would also be great places for extra space ie car parks, storage and leisure there is loads moulti use places

The law requires every building with more than 1200 square meters of space to have a bunker, so 99% of them are built with private money. These huge bunkers in the video are state-owned but they are not actually where most people would go - most people would stay in the small bunker in their flat/workplace.

and you have seen nothing yet..... datacenters are down there, money is beeing printed there, the kilometers of tunnels are hard to comprehend from this short DW clip. And they wont show you everything anyhow, lots of places have elevated seurity. But helsinki is a city full with historic buildings, it would be a shame to get into the situation to actually use these shelters. Also, a nuclear missile is above the city, long before people had time to move underground. They have their lounchers just next door, flight time 2-5 minutes - so when the russikes do a surprise attack with nukes, we have no chance. Lets not kid ourselves.

Most of the shelters are lighter than the big bunkers shown on the video, my apartment complex in Helsinki has two shelters for the residents, normally used as a storage space. The nearest big bunker near me in Eastern Helsinki has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and other sport facilities, I would probably go there in a crisis situation. If I had time to...

Add the costs of the Helsinki bunker system to what humanity pays because Russian people believe they have the right to the geography and inhabitants of other countries. Without that belief Russians would have developed within the context and family of Europe. Europe learned the harsh lessons of cultural chauvinism and coveting the land of others, while Russians continue in the imperial mindset long past the age of empire. That mindset, a toxic inner whispering, turned Russia into an ungovernable colossus with an inferiority complex only satisfied by the domination of others. They must evolve.
@zoolkhan

good luck with the evolvement suggestion. meanwhile, we build more bunkers and run a conscription system other nations can afford to abandon, or never introduce. cheers with beers from finland

Does the system still require citizens to bring their own food? Does it have NBC washdown and air filtration facilities?
@jm-holm
@jm-holm 10 ай бұрын
Air filtration, water filtration and places to wash those contaminated, yes. At least in the big shelters. There are 5000 in Helsinki and 50,000 across the country. They are not all the same. As for food, there isn't really any, nor are you supposed to bring any. It's a shelter, it's temporary. You can stay there for hours or days depending on the situation, you're not meant to be there for weeks or months. You'll survive a week without food no problem, it's supposed to keep you safe and alive, not comfortable.

Not rated for minimum two weeks fallout sheltering? Then okay you have conventional bomb shelters. But Finland is a NATO member now. NATO is a nuclear alliance. Helsinki is in Russian nuclear targeting structure. You WILL need minimum two weeks subsistence for each person in each shelter in the event of a nuclear attack. I'm sorry your generation has to face this nightmare like mine did. @@jm-holm

@@dammitdan106 There are videos that go into much more detail of these large bunkers especially. They have their own underground water reservoirs, shock absorbers for the electricity, air systems, power generators etc as well as blast doors to withstand nuclear attacks and radiation. But this is indeed for the large bunkers, like the one pictured here and around 7 other large bunker facilities in capital area housing at least 50 000 people. None other NATO country is near as prepared for nuclear attack as Finland. If anything the countries best prepared are still not, or were not NATO countries just year ago. Finland and Switzerland.

For some smaller ones you are recommended to bring bed with you but these bigger ones have beds and privys in storage, and some tin can food too. In some of them there are even greenhouses with UV-lights in them during peace time, so there is a possibility to grow some food if the crisis last longer. Depends on the crisis if foor is needed to bring. Basicly they can dump supermarket food into these shelters during a crisis, so no food is needed. In some crisis food at home can be contaminated by some fallout.
