This is 💯 true. It is nice to finally see an interview with a Western person (the guy at the beginning) who doesn't just say, "Taiwan is so convenient! Everyone is so friendly!" I have lived and worked here for 10 years, am married to a Taiwanese guy, have an APRC, but still treated like an outsider and called "foreigner." I love living here but that aspect gets frustrating and annoying, also hurtful. My kids especially get so upset about this. My son is 13 and has gone to Taiwanese local schools since kindergarten, speaks Chinese fluently without an accent, but because he is tall and blonde, his classmates still call him foreigner. He has begun wearing black hoodies to school to cover up his skin and hair so he can blend in more. 😢 It is really difficult for kids and adults to make real friends here because Taiwanese people for the most part seem to only befriend "foreigners" in order to learn English. It is quite easy to have surface-level friendships with Taiwanese people but seems much more difficult to have a deep close relationship. There seems to be a barrier up to some degree because we are not Taiwanese. It is much easier making friends with other "foreigners" from less homogeneous countries.

Hey Ela, Thank you for sharing your honest experience. I do feel upset to hear your kids need to cover up his skin and hair so he can blend in school😢. I think Taiwan is learning foreign immigrant slowly,and this is one of the reason I wanna to creat this channel (also practice my english). More foreigners I have spoken to,then I realize Taiwan is really a homogeneous society. Interesting part is that Taiwanese people like to see foreign youtuber talk about good things in Taiwan,but they still not get used to make a real friend with a western face in real life.

I have been here almost 18 years, speak fluent Chinese and all that means nothing because in their (Tw people) eyes I will always be 老外.

The problem is lacking of discussions of values which shaped culture across the globe on what is it supposed to be in future . 3rd culture kid often having identity crisis(not fully accepted as local from both countries)

@@TheAgromc speaking that local language doesn't mean you are the local people,it is just the beginning of integration. It is all about the values prioritized/behavior/mindsets/ways of talking/physical expression/ways of socialise---aka culture 老外=foreigners,no any negative meaning
@TheAgromc2 жыл бұрын
@@calvintang398 obviously you have missed the point what I meant. I know that speaking the local’s language doesn’t automatically make you a local person but it’s a very strong point, as language is the key segment of a culture. I kept my comment short as i didn’t want to explain how deeply connected with a Taiwanese culture i have gotten in every part whatsoever. By the way ,the point of mentioning 老外 or 外國人 was to tell that i will remain to be regarded as a FOREIGNER or I should say OUTSIDER no matter how deeply integrated in the culture i am. UNFORTUNATELY

Every time I ran into people that look foreign, I insist on speaking Mandarin or Taiwanese. Cause maybe they are just as Taiwanese as me. Who knows! Sometimes I even think it's kindda a racist thing to do when people keep on speaking English to a foreigner-looked-like person just because they doesn't look "Taiwanese". It's like saying "Ni Hao" to a Japanese in America. If they do not speak Mandarin and would rather speak in English, they'll let you know, then we be speaking English. Great video btw, really appreciate this kind of content!

Yep, ive also started doing that recently. If I find them unable to communicate well in mandarin, then I will speak english to them. Also, many of them aren't even from the states! So whats the point of speaking English in the first place if it is just another second language just like chinese to them!
I’m so impressed your channel. Finally, subscribe. I have a question the housing market in Taiwan isn’t expensive. It looks it’s safe in Taiwan. We are planning to visit in Taiwan. Thanks for sharing!!!

For friendship it depends on age because after 26 most taiwanese get married and have kids so they are too busy for friends anyway . Taiwan work life is so heavy too so usually most go home to eat with family .
It’s funny you bring up the topic of being polite by responding in the same language. I’m an ABC and I speak conversational Mandarin just fine. But some Chinese waiters and waitresses have responded in English even after I spoke to them in Mandarin and I thought it was a bit rude. Even though I’m Chinese, I get prejudiced treatment from Chinese people from China. Pretty insulting.

I feel like out of all east Asia Hong Kong and Taiwan are much easier places to make friends as people are more open to foreigners especially in hk where there are many international people living !!!🇭🇰 🤍 🇹🇼
I want to visit Taiwan for Taipei Cycling show. Now I'm sure I need to take my bicycle with me - to make friends by cycling and with zero mandarin knowledge )))
I'm an American and I have to agree with ELA. Please stop using the word "foreigner" when you interview people Jay. I know your intention is not to offend or insult anyone. It's just not the proper term. I understand you don't personally represent Taiwan but please make it focus to be inviting and help others to understand that your intention is to build bridges. Language can be a barrier. But when we are sincere and encouraging...more people will feel like visiting Taiwan.

Hey Dom Tam, Thanks for your advice.I do want to build bridges for more people who want to know about Taiwan. Of course it's my English journey too.
Come on….. a 32 year old female hanging out with someone overnight for celebrating something together, has to ask for permission from parents? That is definitely not common in Taiwan as well!
Taipei is the ultimate city for socializing , party life and the best food 🥟🇹🇼

It's not easy at all. Taiwanese people are civil and helpful when you need it but they are not really friendly. The people here don't really want to spend time and energy to be friends with foreigners. At this point in time, language is no longer a barrier to initiate friendship. The foreigners in Taiwan are generally interested only in sex. So boring.
@xxstormxx56 Жыл бұрын
Don't think foreigners as a whole. Don't think that they are only interested in sex, would you say that you and your people are judgemental hypocrites? Everyone has their own different purposes, for gods sake!
