Great lesson. What made Gary outstanding is the intensity and emotion in his playing. He had great vibrato and he was the best ‘bender’ on the planet.Among his best are the solo’s in Shapes of Things, Empty Rooms, Out in the fields, Still in Love with You, the Messiah will come again and Cold day in hell (live).

My favourite is Gary's work on the Thin Album Black Rose, especially the title track! I just love how he puts a Scottish, as well as Irish Celtic parts in his playing in that song! The way that it has a jig as part of the song! Also his work with Colleseum 11!

Another great lesson Ross. You really capture Gary Moore's style and pass it on to even the early Intermediate player. Keep 'em coming. I can still remember when this album "Still got the Blues" album came out and three songs from that album went onto the set list of the cover band that I was playing in at that time. I wasn't even the loudest voice pushing for them, even though I was really excited at the music I'd be playing. Movin' on, Walking by Myself and Oh Pretty Woman just jumped out at me, and to my good fortune, the drummer as well. There seemed to be no problem filling the dance floor with just the opening guitar line to "I'm Walking" or "Movin' on". Those were the days - the "flock of seagulls" and their curious colleagues appeared to have flown, and music seemed to be back on the right heading.

I'm pleasantly surprised. Not many people can imitate Gary's tone and perfect bends. If you watched Gary closely, he used his index and middle fingers for most of the pentatonic work he did. For example, many times he used index on the 5th fret and middle on the 8th in the Am shape. Good lesson!

All of Gary's solos are great, and many different styles, But you can't really go past Still Got The Blues and Empty Rooms outro solos (Empty rooms live version either Stockholm 87 or from the "We want Moore" Album) Another thing that made Gary's songs so great apart from the incredible guitar playing was his lyrics, very heartfelt and full of emotion. No one really played with the passion and fire Gary had.

Good lesson from such a young chap. Gary was a phenomenal player when you think he really only used 3 fingers and in a lot of his playing, just 2 and then mostly down strokes with the pick as well. He was quite an 'agricultural' player in that respect but man was he able to convey a ton of stuff with that technique. He was also an incredibly clean player despite his quite aggressive physical touch on the guitar. Yeah, keep the Gazza fires burning man because a whole new generation of players need to discover what a jaw dropping musician he was.
@SethCampbell665 жыл бұрын
Actually, that's not true. He definitely used 4 fingers, but very occasionally. Nevertheless, he was faster and better with 2 or 3 fingers than 99,99% of all guitarists out there.

I've been watching your vids for a while now and I've become increasingly impressed with your ability, technical knowledge and personality - I have had various one to one lessons over the years, tried to adsorb "book theory", attempted to get my head around the circle of fifths and tried to learn to play solos over chord changes, with apalling results. The teachers I've experienced, have had the theory in buckets but played like beginners - the most inspiring guitarists I have known, and met, knew next to no theory but somehow worked their playing to sound like they knew what they were doing, this is the approach I have unfortunately fallen into. I can play most advanced stuff except sweep picking, which always sounds like I've dropped my guitar down a flight of stairs, so I'm hoping you can drag me out of my musical dyslexia (I nearly spelled that wrong!!) - I've subscribed to your course today and I'll do my best to do it justice. Thanks for all the guitar stuff you do, I genuinely hope you achieve everything you want to in the world of guitar. Stuart.

Great video, one thing I read years ago, think it was 'guitarist' magazine, that Gary Moore was naturally left handed but played guitar right handed so his fretting hand was a lot stronger than a regular right hander. The rest is just blinding talent, one of the best, ever.

Ross. Do you ever do your vibrato higher up the neck but take your hand off the neck, so the only contact is the fingertip that is being used? I find that it gives a deeper sweep of vibrato (I’m a 59 year old, old school player). Plus a tip I give people it to hit the note and hold for a moment before you do the vibrato. Keith Scott of Bryan Adams used to do this too. You explain well. I’ve only just come across your channel today as I’m making the move into recording on a Mac. I’m looking for an interface now.

Hey, great video! I do have a question about Gary Moore in general. I recently learned Still Got The Blues, beginning to end. And unless I’m wrong, almost the entirety of both of those solos, the first short, one, and the outro solo a pretty much alternate picking. Unless I’m missing something, since you did mention that he does use a lot of hammer ons, which I was already aware of and songs, like Oh Pretty Woman, as well as walking by myself, neither of those I’ve started learning yet, but I intend to. I definitely hear and see the hammer ons in both of those songs, but Still Got The Blues at least from what I’m hearing is mostly or pretty much all alternate picking.

Cheers ross, great lesson yet again, i was listening to josh smith describing going through chord changes in his playing using more jazz style licks to mix in with his blues. I couldnt quite grasp the concept so anything related to this "colouring" of pentatonics with these jazzy licks over chord changes would help me greatly. Many thanks for your vids, hope i made sense!
