German public service broadcasters ARD and ZDF have extended their lunchtime show “MiMa” to two hours. The new format now includes an interresting sequence of opt-ins and opt-outs where the two channels insert their own news segments.

Working in the industry I can tell you that this kind of breakaway/rejoining can be a nightmare to accomplish. It's a case of practice makes perfect, however you only need one little part to not work & it becomes a nightmare to resolve. _FUN TO DO THOUGH!_ 👍

It never crossed my mind that ARD and ZDF share programming, including broadcasting Mima, I always thought they were competitors like other European public channels.

It's actually in their respected charters, and it dates back to the 1960's, originally as a programming block for the East German viewers.

It actually used to be that the whole schedule between Morgen Magazin and Mittags Magazin was shared between the two broadcasters with them alternating who runs it each week. But now it's only MoMa and MiMa that are alternated, with the rest of the schedule going back to the respective broadcaster. Even more interestingly I noticed MiMa and MoMa are not done by the same broadcaster each week, so for example on the week starting 08/01 it's ZDF's MoMa, but ARD's MiMa, but on the week starting 15/01 it's ARD's MoMa and ZDF's MiMa

@@moramento22 it used to be the case that both magazines came from the same broadcaster in the same week. since 2018, ZDF has also had mima produced by the same editorial team as ZDF moma in Berlin. Because this editorial team cannot produce moma and mima at the same time, this swap had to be made.

@@GueldnertvThe old system just seems like a crazy idea because the technical staff are only being hired every other week.

@@linmanfu913not so crazy, each odd week one public broadcaster does the morning show, and even week - the lunchtime show. Other one - the other way around. And technical staff of both channels can do both, just not at the same day. A clever way to share human time, as for me, if you have two public broadcasters which have to be somewhat different, and would rather not bother to hire two teams for each.

One thing I noticed is the ZDF digital on-screen logo when ARD transmits ZDF MoMa and MiMa. First, can't they use their own logo on ZDF shows they transmit? Second, does ZDF show the Das Erste logo whenever they transmit ARD MoMa and MiMa?

Btw i have noticed that ik not fully relevent but UK channels do not display their age ratings, is there a reason for this?
@JamieMurphy25
@JamieMurphy25 8 ай бұрын
There's no age classification system for TV and radio channels in place on UK channels, only verbal warnings and the 9pm watershed. Sky is currently doing age rated programming on their channels via their EPG (but not on screen), this is to implement a seamless PIN protection during daytime hours, unlike the mishap after they landed in trouble in 2022 for airing Game of Thrones during daytime hours without PIN controls, and that was a different PIN system in place.

Why do German news presenters always stand for the whole show. Must be tiring.
@nikzuLP
@nikzuLP 8 ай бұрын
In a Tagesschau behind the scenes, if memory serves, they talked about switching from sitting to standing presenters when changing over tho the new set. Their goal was to make it more lively, more dynamic. I don't know why other news shows do it where the presenters just stay behind their desks though.

The average age of ARD/ZDF viewers is 65 years, I think their audience like it a bit old fashioned u know. The ZDF studio was literally done last year, it´s insane how antiquated it looks.

I actually think it's a bit of an international standard now, sticking a presenter in front of a big TV. I still miss seeing a hub of activity behind a newsreader.

@@linmanfu913 It looks cool but in comparison to, for example the BBC studios it's still quite "unmodern" tough. I mean, instead of a big countdown, there's just a big gong. And also the way how the news are presented. The text information is just placed on the screen behind the news anchor and there's only a very few amount of text to inform the TV viewers. Meanwhile the BBC got constantly new and changing news at the bottom. Another aspect is the way of delivering the news to the people. At the ARD, they just put a white sheet away to the side without even looking at it. And because we can receive German television in Denmark, we sometimes just change the channels and complain about how unmodern german television is, in comparison to other countries. But that's just my opinion. I can imagine that Germans are used to this way of news and they still like it

Because they need to spend their money wisely. Take note that in Germany, the license fee is shared among two national stations (Das Esrte and ZDF), 3 national radio stations under the Deutschlandradio banner, the 9 ARD regional TV and radio stations, several specialty channels (ARD One, KiKa, Tagesschau24, ZDFNeo, ZDFinfo, etc), a film and tv production unit (Degato Films), etc. They produce the most number of original drama and entertainment shows, original documentaries that commercial stations will never do, help produce local films, and employ the most number of people in the German media sector. So, of course, they need to spend their money on program content than being "grandiose" with their sets. It's called "value engineering", where they use a little resouce as possible to build, for example, a set. All while making sure that it is functional enough to help them report stories to viewers.
