In Italienisch haben wir einen ähnlichen Unterschied zwischen "ti voglio bene" = "ich hab dich lieb" und "ti amo" = "ich liebe dich". Ich bin sehr froh, dass es auch in Deutsch verschiedene Ausdrücke gibt, um verschiedene Typen von Liebe zu äußern! "I love you" scheint mir immer ein bisschen zu stark in einigen Situationen... In Ukraine we have two specific wordings for that "Я тебе люблю" (ja tebe liubju) and "Я тебе кохаю" (ja tebe kohaju). The second one only applies to romantic situations, when first one is very general and may be used within various environments.

Mir geht es ähnlich wie @JJ. Gerade dadurch, dass "ich hab dich lieb" vermutlich häufig im Familienkontext verwendet wird, drückt es für mich eher dieses Gefühl von angekommen sein aus und ist daher die größere Vertrauensbekundung (mir fällt kein besserer Ausdruck ein), auch in einer Beziehung. Ich liebe dich ich für mich wirklich rein romantisch besetzt und ich und fühlt sich im Vergleich aber etwas oberflächlicher an (mehr wie eine "Höflichkeitsfloskel" als eine tatsächliche Liebesbekundung).

"Liebe geht durch den Magen" ist ein Deutscher Ausdruck auch... aber in manchen Kulturen nehmen wir das ernsthafter als in anderen. In meiner Kultur ist das ... riesig. Wenn man die Oma besucht, braucht man für 2 Tage danach nicht mehr zu essen.

In Turkish we say "seni seviyorum" not only to the persons we're romantically involved with but also to our family members and to close friends. Whereas "sana aşığım" can only be said to the person who is literally "the one" for you. Probably the latter would correspond to "ich liebe dich" better.

In Spanish we have a variety of ways to express love, the basic two: "Te quiero", which you can use with everybody you like, and "Te amo" which is only for the ones you actually feel love for. I like to say "Uno quiere por, y ama a pesar de", which would be in English "One loves because of, and LOVES in spite of...". That conveys the difference, I believe. One can also say: "Te adoro" which is romantic only but informal: something you would say before saying "te amo". "Te estimo" is something you would use with someone you have recently met, or maybe with a coworker with whom you have more than a work relationship but less than a friendship.

Hier hört man manchmal das Klischee vom steifen Deutsch(en) durch, das ich aber überhaupt nicht bestätigen kann. Ich habe die erste Hälfte meines Lebens Deutsch gesprochen; die zweite Englisch. Und noch heute fehlen mir im Englischen emotionale Ausdrücke. Ein ganz einfaches Beispiel: "Ich freue mich auf..." - englisch: "I am looking forward to..." - klingt mir auf Englisch extrem formal und trocken; auf deutsch hört man die Freude durch. Es stimmt zwar, dass 'I love you' häufiger verwendet wird als 'Ich liebe dich', aber es ist auch weniger intensiv. Das allerschwierigste aber ist "geil", in allen seinen Bedeutungen: Horny, sexy, terrific - only 'terrific' comes close (wobei "toll" wohl eine bessere Übersetzung wäre); die sexuellen Bedeutungen klingen eher flach.

My mom isn't that good in expressing her love but she found her way in using two very personal pet names for me. It's good and important to find a verbal expression. Even if it seems low-key (like some expressions that were mentioned here, "fahr vorsichtig" for example) or rarely used - the other person will understand and appreciate it. It's like hidden signs. Me (English) and my partner (Deutsch) say "I love you" regularly, several times a day. But, they never say "ich liebe dich" to me, and in fact when I do say it auf Deutsch, I get an English "I love you" in return 😂

​@@szelan Hm, I think (me as a German) Liebchen is rather used in an ironic way while as Liebling expresses the serious way. Both translates as "honey". (no, not that honey for eating!) "Liebchen, das musst du aber noch mal lernen!" = "Honey, you gotta learn it again!" "Liebling, du bist die schönste und wundervollste Frau der Welt!" = "Honey, you are the most beautiful and most wonderful woman in the world!" But in old-fashioned German songs, sometimes Liebchen is also used in a serious way. ("mein Liebchen" = my girlfriend/boyfriend, but most times it's girlfriend) Keep complicated! (motto of the Germans)

In Greece we express love by saying "Σαγαπάω" (Sagap-a-o) and it's actually a really meaningful, sensitive word that we usually use with our partners, family and close friends. I think that Greek people (and generally Mediterranean people) are more publically emotionally open so we use it pretty often if we really mean it. The only alternative way of saying it in a lighter way to friends, pets etc is ''Σαγαπώ" (Sagapo). Yes, it's the same word without the letter "a" but it makes quite a difference.

In Spanish, for friends and family, we say "te quiero", which roughly translates to "I really like you" & "significas mucho para mí/significas el mundo para mí" and that translates to "You mean a lot for me /you mean the world for me" and "te amo" (I love you) which is much more powerful for many people and you would use it with your partner or close friends and family ~🇲🇽

@@young19boy it really variea depending on the country. There are people who never use “Te amo”, and they just say “te quiero”. Both are exactly the same in terms if meaning. The context is what can change. When I say “te quiero” to my mom, it doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t love her or that I don’t love her enough. It is just a matter of choices. Generally people learn that “te amo” is the absolute but it doesn’t need to be if you never use it. “Te quiero” can reach exactly that level too.

My main language is Spanish and when you like the relationship between someone (like a friendship, but not a strong one) you say "Te quiero", but when you really want to express a strong feeling, something really that comes from inside you (To your family or your lover) you say "Te amo". (I studied that language long enough and have C2 level of Spanish, so I think I know that language very well - being a native speaker does not qualify you as far as a university's studies do)

And to express our love we use these kind of expressions of being grateful to get to know someone like: "İyi ki varsın.(I'm glad that you exist.)" And I think Turkish people are also not good at saying directly "Seni seviyorum." that often.

Surprisingly, the same thing happens also in Indonesia 🇮🇩☺️ If we translate “I love you” into Indonesian, it will be “Aku cinta kamu”. But no one in Indonesia ever said that. It’s waaay too formal and cringey. Just like “Ich liebe dich”. In Indonesia, we normally say, “Aku sayang kamu” which means “I have an affection for you”. It’s just as casual as, “Ich hab’ dich lieb”, I guess. Or… we can just say “Aku suka kamu” which means “I like you” or “Ich mag dich”.

Hallo an alle! Ich bin Russischer. Ich wusste vorher nicht, dass Deutschen zwei Ausdrücke ihrer Liebe haben. Wir benutzen gewöhnlich nur einen Ausdruck: "Я люблю тебя" (Ya l'ubl'u tebya) oder, als man in unserer Sprache manchmal eine Wörter miteinander verändern kann, "Я тебя люблю". Das ist gleich und man kann es wörtlich übersetzen als "Ich liebe dich". Wenn wir "Ich hab dich lieb" wörtlich auf die russische Sprache übersetzen, klingt es sehr seltsam - wir sagen so gar nie. In Czech it's very similar to German - "Miluju tě" would be "Ich liebe dich" which you would only say romantically to a partner. And "mám tě rád" would be "Ich hab dich lieb" which you can say to anyone. But then it changes meaning depending on the context, it would convey a different meaning to family and to friends. But we almost never say it... I remember a couple years ago I told my parents "ich hab ihr lieb" (mám vás rád) and they looked at me like I'm crazy before they said it back :D We prefer longer hugs or we simply take it automatically that "wir haben uns lieb" since if we didn't, we wouldn't spend so much time together. And once I had this notion that yeah, you should say it to your close ones at least once, so I said it to all my closer friends individually and they were kind of weirded out by it but also quite glad to hear it, since it's a nice thing to hear, just unexpected and uncommon. And some of them even asked me if I'm alright or if something bad happened. One was worried that I'm having suicidal thoughts because otherwise why would I say it :D So yeah, if you thought that Germans rarely say it, try saying it to a Czech.

In portuguese, we say "eu te amo" (literally "ich dich liebe"). It is fairly common in our culture to say it to family members, specially parents and children before you hang up the phone, just like in english. We say "te amo, tchau" and it works just like "love you, bye". To make it lighter and better suited for those phone/not-so-serious situations, we drop the "ich".

In Italy we usually say something along the lines of "Ti voglio bene" for friends and family which is the equivalent to "Ich hab dich lieb". For a romantic relationship we use "Ti amo". It's more serious and more personal. In Luxembourg, however, there is only one expression which is "Ech hunn dech gär/gaeren". It basically means the same thing as "Ich hab dich lieb". It can be used for both friends & family as well as romantic relationships. In order to know which version the person telling you "Ech hunn dech gär/gaeren." is using you just have to figure it out by context and delivery/tone.

Im Luxemburgischen gibt es zwei Redewendungen um seine Zuneigung aus zu drücken. Es gibt einerseits "Ech si frou mat dir" was wörtlich bedeutet "ich bin froh/glücklich mit dir". Das ist ein Ausdruk für Zuneigung zu einer Person. Man gebracht diesen Ausdruck genau so wie der deutsche Ausdruck "ich hab dich (ganz doll) lieb", für den Partner, die Familie und Freunde. Anderseits gibt es auch den Ausdruck "Ech hunn dech gären". Wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet es "ich hab dich gern", sinnlich ist es trotzdem anders. Denn "ich hab dich gern" bezeichnet im Deutschen eine "leichte" Zuneigung (es wird in seltenen Fällen auch für stärkere Zuneigung benutzt aber das ist nicht umgänglich). Jedoch drückt man im Luxemburgischen damit starke/grosse Liebe aus . Man sagt dies eigentlich nur zum Partner und selten zu engen Familienangehörigen. Dies kann aber auch zur Verwirrung füren da man "Ech hunn ____ gären" benutzt um an zu geben wenn man für etwas eine Neigung/Vorliebe hat oder etwas nach seinem Geschmack findet. Dies liegt aber nur daran dass wir kein Verb haben um weder das Mögen noch das Lieben wörtlich aus zu drücken. Wr haben nur diese beiden Sprüchen.

In Philippines, the equivalent for Ich Liebe Dich is Mahal Kita/Iniibig Kita/Iniirog Kita in Tagalog - one of the more than 175 languages. Most Filipinos I know, like me and my clan rarely utter these phrases. We say Kumain ka na ba? (Have you eaten?) or Ingat (take care) to show affection. 💞

The last time I said "I love you" was 10 years ago which marked the end of my friendship with that person because the feeling wasn't mutual. In my native language traditionally we almost never say "I love you" unless it's very serious, but lately some people tried to make it more casual.
