Multidisciplinary field, applicable across industries and markets. I did many of the Google and Coursera courses to market my own startup and for interest sake. I don't regret the sleepless nights.

you can learn digital marketing for free online, there are thousands on youtube guides, forums and blogs. You can also do free google digital marketing certifications and digital marketing courses on hubspot. Just google search hubspot courses and google digital marketing course.

Can't I just post blogs on Wordpress? My pockets are simply always empty (online student - no assisted funding)

You can post blogs on wordpress but if you want to monetise your website, grow its traffic it must look professional e.g yourblog.com or yourblog.co.za instead of yourblog.wordpress.com. You can have a blog on blogger.com for free and buy a domain name so it looks more professional. Growing the blog and getting traffic is what will really teach you digital marketing skills.
