These are very good questions... as an American myself - from Purdue University... I think it is also worth noting a unique challenge for international PhD holders and job placements. The American context in particular is an interesting (to put it lightly) "relationship" (if we can call it that - often predatory) between academia and industry and translates harshly to grad students and post-docs... I say this because in other countries there seems to be a deeper - even if it doesn't always translate to more pay - respect for science: But in America the underlying message of "no one cares about your publications" is felt more so than in other countries... just my initial thoughts; appreciate the honesty in this video. I do think entrepreneurship/start-up pathways exist more in America; but they are more difficult then they appear - and getting your post doc from the right ecosystem/network matters a lot (i.e. not all PhDs are created equally).

I also go to Purdue as a PhD student unfortunately and I have to say that you feel this way bc of your experience at Purdue-this school SUCKS! I graduated Dartmouth before starting here and my experiences with professors, support, and research are like night and day. I’m seriously considering dropping out.

well Purdue is the greatest university in the world... in that it represents all the good and bad of the university system. It is very raw and not fancy; people work extra hard, nothing is handed out.

LOL thanks mate, I am an Aussie who got my PhD in applied mathematics from CMU. I was recruited by a cybersecurity firm in Palo Alto but I felt I was spinning my wheels and I got a lead to a position at facebook back in 2014. At the third interview I got that comment. "you are too qualify for this position" I was gutted. I wish I had seen something like this after I graduated it would had been helpful.

Don't put the PhD on your resume. I know of people who have even cut their degrees from their resumes for jobs, emphasising their experience and voila, they got the job. Putting academic qualifications first is only important in the academic world. If you have higher ed. and it - even - matters, they will be delighted to know during the job interview. At most Australian accounting firms they want to know your ATAR (Enter score) more than your degree/masters etc. The funny part is, university students are told during O-week that ATARs don't matter anymore, because you're 'in' and, then, in some professions it comes back to haunt them...

Thanks for the insight! One of the things I’m worried about for my chemistry PhD is what kind of careers I can pursue. I’m interested in the science, but I have no clue what jobs are available after grad school. I’d love to see a video like that!

At the end of the day, a PhD means absolutely nothing to companies. You are the same as someone with an undergraduate degree.

Great video. Andy. I think this second topic you approach is the main factor that triggers my anxiety. I feel I am old, too qualified and resourceful for my current paycheck and level of pressure to deliver results. I feel I should be able to have better savings and perspective of future. Apart from that, life in academia is pretty lonely from my stance. I would love to work in a team in which we could discuss projects and have a beer later. I have finished my PhD in 2020 and I am still in academia as post-doc. I am aspiring to change country , I am currently in Japan, and path, i.e., migrating to industry. However, even being specialist in a very promising field, such as geostatistics, I can not find a quick position.

I have a question, most of your videos emphasize getting a phd and then transitioning in to industry. Why don't you make videos about staying in academia or why didn't you ?

My former boss told me she wont hire me if I had doctorate applying as QA staff. I would be overqualified. That is why I have no plans for doctorate anytime. Maybe when Im older

I will build a little off from what Enosh just said but I will go in a couple of different directions. First, I do not believe a problem in the States is solely confined here, but it is a prominent problem, nonetheless. Anti-Intellectualism. That is, there has always been a bit of this culture that does not like intelligence and academia. Some of it also deals with money. "Ohh, you can't do that, you'll ruin our new pipeline and my profits." Or, "What do you mean I have to add some of nutrients to my white bread? Do you realize how much that will cost me to make bread that way?" And so on. Second, part of the money problem and why PhDs are not hireable is in the very place you came from. School and Teaching. Community colleges and middle schools/high schools do not want to hire a PhD. It costs too much money. PhDs have a higher starting floor of salary than those with a Bachelor's and Teaching certificates. In fact, schools would rather hire the undergrad and have him or her complete his or her Master's or PhD while they are teaching, so that by the time that person graduates, it will not such a bump up in pay. Third, I think there may be a reason why some industries might not be as opposed to hiring a PhD anymore. It has to do with something that you mentioned just after you talked about the "you are too over qualified for this position". Education. In the States, I would say that somewhere around the late 80s to early 90s, some people were already saying that, "A high school diploma is not worth the paper it was printed on." Even though you still had some people drop out or fail enough times to age out of the school system, more and more people had a diploma. In fact, it seems as though most people nowadays will look down on you if you could not graduate. Yes, it still had importance in the first third or even first half of the 1900s. All of its importance has now been wiped out. So then we turn to undergrad university. Around approximately 1950, there was only about 7% of citizens who even went to university, let alone graduate from it. However, that percentage grew from roughly 1970 on forward. It was already becoming a situation in the 90s in which most high school counselors around the country were really pushing hard for people to go to college/university. Now, instead of having only maybe the top 5-15% of students of a high school go on to university, you are having around the top half being pushed into university. It is why every place is jammed full of people, with a good portion of those 18-year-olds that should not have been there/placed there. I remember you once said that, "Research papers are the currency of academia." Well, it seems more and more industries are not just looking for years of experience, but also looking to make sure the box for "graduated university" is also checked. And this now goes back to why industry is slowly hiring PhDs. It is the same reason university graduates were hired right out of school. The PhD demonstrates to the employer that you have some intellect. It also demonstrates what you talked about when you mentioned previously that you learned to sew. That is, a PhD seems to also demonstrate you can learn quickly and learn more about the job more than someone with just a Bachelor's. For the PhD might be slowly becoming "the price of admission" to some areas of the workforce, since more people have the degree, with newer ones created each year. A weeding out function, if you will. I may be wrong about all of that, though. It is just what I think of and what I have read and researched. Hope it helps!

Well high schools use to have either college prep track or career track. Everyone know has to do college prep so the school is not accused of discrimination against some students

Hello, Andy... thank you for your great video as always. Would you mind making a video advising me on what I should think about before accepting or rejecting the offer? I've received two PhD offers in the early of this month. I've already seen your video "Are PhDs from prestigious universities more valuable? The most important considerations", but I still can't make a decision because I'm afraid I'll overlook something important.

I definitely think the 'over qualified' statement is really more about asking if the person will be engaged, challenged, and motivated in the role. It is a bot of a throw-away line, in my opinion. In the military people often pushed to be promoted to a higher rank (often chasing pay and prestige), but often became disillusioned because the work at that level was not engaging or interesting.

But u can work till 70years++ with a PhD if you have career in academic or scientific field.(I think it's worth it) It's harming your career if you're transitioning to other industry as doctorate degree is more suitable for academicians. But currently more industries allow us to work remotely or mixed method, I think it gives us chance to pursue advance degree. As long as we know how to manage our schedule between work study n family life.

Most universities will force you out from being paid at 65, although you might get to keep your office and parking space for a few years provided you help the research students to publish.
