Well it's a lot easier to name capitals of nearby countries than countries halfway across the world... I know Ottawa and Mexico City. Besides that, I only know the very popular ones, Cairo, Dublin, Berlin, Paris, New Dheli, Madrid, Brasilia, Beijing, Tokyo, Seol, etc.. Any random smaller country theres literally no reason an American would know it.. like I think he asked the capital of Albania... The last time 99% of people from the U.S. heard about Albania was in School. Clearly they're not gonna know the capital. Not sure where he was in this video, but I bet the distance from New York to LA is further than from wherever he is to Albania. So yeah, it's not too surprising that Europeans should know other European capitals. It's their neighbors, and Europe is tiny compared to other continents.

I don’t know much of anything about China/HK/Taiwan conflicts/wars/politics, but whatever is going on there, I just know there’s no excuse for the violence and suffering. My Taiwanese friend is very adamant that his family is from Taiwan and not China, he doesn’t identify as Chinese, so I think there’s a strong sense of ethnic/cultural identity there and probably similar in HK. From my privileged (and naive) life in Canada, I think of China and HK in very different ways, they seem to be very different culturally from my understanding.

I have a question for you: Isn't asking for "countries that have not been recognised by the UN" really weird as, as far as I know, the number of countries in the world is often counted as the number of countries recognised by the UN ?
@o_msb82 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It was a very hard and weird question.
@puny_God2 жыл бұрын
There are some self recognised countries (Palestine) which are not officially recognised by the UN. So that's why it's a very tricky question. Palestine doesn't exist however, it's not like a group of people just come up with a new country every now and then lol
@Lau3464l2 жыл бұрын
It’s a weird concept for sure. It often has to do with nations that seek independence from occupying powers, but even that isn’t a great definition. For example, French Guiana is a nation but the UN doesn’t include it because they consider it part of France, kind of. Another example is Abkhazia which is considered by most countries to be part of Georgia but they have sought independence through many wars and are a distinct ethnic group. Palestine is a good example in general for this question though because of how often it is in the news and on social media, but there’s tons of examples, and the most similar to Palestine as far as I understand are Western Sahara and Northern Cyprus. It’s also helpful to think about the many islands that have been “conquered” by colonial powers (French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, British, etc.) where those colonizers have largely pulled out but still have some kind of symbolic authority or political oversight, like Aruba, French Polynesia, Faroe Islands, Guadeloupe, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Martinique, madeira, etc. (I don’t mean to oversimplify the histories or question the legitimacies of any of these places by listing them here, they all have very complex and valuable histories that I don’t know enough about!)
@lingualizer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I won't ask that question anymore, but I had to ask it at least once to see what's gonna happen
@bensan949312 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Any real place that isn't a UN-recognised country could be justified as a correct answer to that question, because there are no criteria that would rule an answer to be incorrect. Newfoundland? Forvik? The Moon? None of them would be incorrect.
