@@SirDrifto Turn radius was actually a design requirement. Car needed to be able to turn around on an average road in one single turn, without need to reverse and without touching the curbs. Taxi drivers were an important subset of the target group for the w123.

I think something to mention is: most of the W123 have no ABS. So for the younger folk who never learned to brake without ABS,they maybe should try to get adjusted to that before their first time in the snow.

Looks fun. My next Diesel will be a 240D manual. I have a 300SD (which I will keep of course). I had a 1987 190D with about 350k miles on it and I loved it until my daughter totaled it.

Did the 240’s also have the limited slip differential? My 84 Euro 300d would just plow through snow on regular seasonal tires!

Now I'm dying to give this a try. If only there was some snow... Also, my 83 240D suffers from cold weather squealing pig syndrome. Try bar soap on the belts for a quick fix.

@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle w116 and w126 diesel also were limited to the north american market. 300DC, w123 300d turbodiesel als well (the turbo was only offered in the estate car in europe, never in the sedan). The reason Mercedes did that was that they needed more diesel models in the US to bring fleet fuel consumption down. They never bothered with luxury diesels in Europe because they thaught that whoever was going to spent huge money on the w123 coupé or even an S-class would certainly prefer the refinement of a petrol engine. I would really love to get my hands on a 300 turbodiesel sedan...

@@turboseize Thanks for the information. The diesel engines on the w115,116,123,126 were better engines, than the petrol engines of the same time period, in my opinion. Europe lost out big time.
@turboseize
@turboseize 11 ай бұрын
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle In terms of durability, yes, maybe. (Although all petrol engines from w123 and w126 would be called bulletproof came they from another manufacturer, so it's not that the petrol engines were unreliable or didn'n last... quite the opposite. They were just not as ridiculously reliable as the diesels). But there is no denying that the diesels are noticeably slower and much noisier than the petrol engines. In town or on country roads, this doesn't matter much, but at higher speeds, the difference in cabin noise levels is enormous. You have to keep in mind that when these cars were new, the US was suffering under the 55mph dictate (=88km/h), while motorway speed limits in Europe were noticeably higher (between 110 to 130km/h in most countries or even completely absent like in Germany).
