I LOVE Magda as a deck. I haven't gotten into CEDH but if I do I will be playing Magda. Part of my favorite things about commander decks is the flavor, and I think a lot of CEDH decks loose that (Just like grixis good stuff), but Magda still feels flavorful while being good. Happy birthday Cam!

I mean, yeah, some of the decks in the format are “3 color piles” or “4 color piles” but that just IS their identity. One of the very many unique strategies you can run with is to grab a commander or two and just run the best cards in the format. Najeela has mostly turned into that. But, one, most of the decks in the format are not that, and two, even the ones that are kind of like that still play cards that specifically synergize w the commander(s). Look at Rog Silas. It looks like just a Grixis pile but most of the lists have started running ways to weaponize wheels (which isn’t all that common) and they play springleaf drum and other versions of that card and like infernal plunge, mox ruby.. I mean amber that don’t show up all that often. And so on. These are just the “good stuff plans” look at Tyamn and Malcolm Kediss, Bruse Thrassios, Magda, Dargo x, Atraxa, Rocco, I mean these are real decks and they don’t have that much overlap. If you want to play cedh and don’t want to do what everyone else is doing it’s actually pretty easy. The format is so diverse their really isn’t anything everyone is doing. Was Thassa’s Oracle or breach in any of the decks I listed? You look at the results from a big cedh tourney and you’ll find like 12 totally unique decks and maybe a couple lists w the same commanders. Imagine, that isn’t Friday night magic, that’s a real event. Cedh has a totally diverse meta. You’ll love it. Jump on in and Magda is a fantastic place to start 🖖namaste

Another thing that alot of people don't realize with karn TGC is that you are able to pull artifacts out of exile with him. so if you get portable hole'd or just hit with some form of exile removal you can have karn come down and pull that card back to your hand to re-use.

I've just built a budget version of Magda and a card I really like in the deck is Swiftgear Drake from brothers war. It's a 2/4 artifact creature with Flying and Haste that has an etb to put up to one card from a graveyard on the bottom of its owner's library. It can be brought in with Magda since it's an artifact to stop someone potential win and I have used to it put clock of omens back in my deck after it got countered when I had to hard cast it one game. I think the biggest downside is that it's 5 mana if you are hard casting it.

Another nice thing about Karn is that it can get you an artifact from exile. So even if you exiled something important with Chiss-Goria, or the clock got exiled somehow, you can get it back 😊

A few things: 1) the one ring protection is on cast. Magda search for the 1 ring won't get the protection. 2) cursed mirror can win off an opponents dockside if you net enough treasures 3) utvara and maskwood is a amazing synergy. 4) bloodboiler can tap itself with its own ability the turn it comes out even though it has summoning sickness. 5) magda is awesome

There's a few cards you're not running in your Magda list im curious about why not namely -Ancient Tomb (We run a bunch of artifacts and big dumb dragons) -Sculpting Steel (Copies a second stax piece / Portal to Phyrexia / etc.) -Axgard Cavalry (Best 2 Drop Dwarf) -Grafdigger's Cage (Anti-Kinnan Tech, you have Spine so you can just spine it away after infinite treasures) -Sokenzan (Incredibly low opportunity cost, can be useful with Maskwood) -Delayed Blast Fireball

Love all the stuff it does on the stack. 2 friends I play with regularly built it first though, so I never built it. Maybe I'll borrow it from them.

yeah I feel you, I avoid building the same decks as people I know I'll be playing with regularly. I mean there are countless options for commanders nowadays, might as well have some variety at the table. Still I love my Magda, I would totally recommend it.

Love Magda, and honestly it feels difficult to make it not make it super competitive. Obviously you can take out the clock/art dwarf combo and you can remove dockside but it still feels super strong to just cheat out dragons and blightsteel at instant speed lol. Also, consider Inferno of the Star Mounts as an extra little dragon. Hastey and has an nasty pump, could be a nice out. I just think it’s cool lol

@@verdelger If you want de-CEDH it you just focus on making treasures and cheating out scary artifacts and dragons like Blightsteel, bale fire, scourge of the throne portal to Phyrexia etc. it kind of becomes a big stompy deck, but still very potent because you tutor at instant speed. You can do some treasure victory synergies or big mana stuff too.

@@verdelger Yeah you definitely don’t need to go infinite for Magda to be potent in casual. In a high power but not CEDH build you can focus on some more dwarf cards like 7 dwarves etc. your focus can be generating large amounts of treasures instead of infinite treasures and you can even still use things like treasure burn, you just won’t go infinite with it. You can also do a modular Magda deck where you have a huge stack of scary artifacts/dragons/artefact creatures separate from the rest of your deck. And you let your opponents choose (before the game starts) a set amount at random (they don’t see what the cards are ofc). And you add those to your deck. Then you don’t know what your big scary targets are when you start then game and it becomes a surprise.

I feel like we could revisit this commander even now with more to say considering at least one Magda pilot has been in most top 8s or even winning multiple tournaments in the last few months. Deck is strong and imo one of the more complex combo decks giving both experienced and inexperienced players trouble alike. Even in a post bowmasters world the deck is surprisingly versatile and explosive without needing to cast too many spells to win, and there's just so many lines they can use. Seriously, looking at the community primer for this deck is like reading a book they can combo so many different ways.

Love anything Magda related. Cam out of curiosity, have you considered Mines of Moria as a utility land? With how little recursion the list usually runs once stuff is in the gy its pretty much just there, so you have something to do with free mana to create some extra treasures to grind out a longer game. The tapped unless you have a legendary creature out can be a bit rough but considering the main premise of the deck is to have Magda out as often as possible, and residual benefits if the monkey or Chiss is out, could maybe be beneficial. Also sidebar, having a dwarf deck without the mines almost feels sacrilegious.

There was one game where I exiled the clock and my best friend still beat with all those big bad dragons. Blockers don't help if they get pinged every turn because he creates copies of the Borgadian Hellkite with Kiki-Jiki. I lost on combat damage against Madga which is insolent by itself. I love it.

the second hand plays sol ring turn two into magda into unlicenced hearse off the treasure. Then turn 3 you can play out maskwood and starn churning out dwarves. Also at that point the crewed vehicle will be another dwarf that'll get sizable pretty soon. I feel like this is a keep

The second test hand seemed fine honestly, it was cavern solring herse turn one, turn two Magda crew use the treasure to play the bloodfire, with the ability to crew to make a treasure off it, turn 3 maskwood nexus make 3 more treasures, if one creature was drawn in the top 4 cards or a red land was drawn to be played on turn 2 to save the treasure use, that's a Magda activation and win on the next turn using the hearse as your artifact dwarf.

This might be my budget deck building brain speaking but using Reckless Handling might not be as good as tutoring for dockside but it lets you get any of your artifact dwarfs to start your combos or any piece to turn magda into a dork and potentially lets you turn artifacts drawn and not tutored into potential damage to the table. To me the fact that it gets your Universal Automaton which is the best way to get going in most cases makes it worth running since it also has flexibility to go get your stax pieces since you can be casting those and potentially not using magda's tutor for them. At least in this kinda turbo variant.

It looks like Red Elemental Blast would be better in the list than Pyroblast. It's s a bit of a niche scenario where the difference matters, but REB can only have it target changed with something like a Deflecting Swat if there's another Blue target whereas Pyroblast can legally target anything. Without any Storm synergy the only real difference is that REB will always go 1 for 1 when its target is changed and Pyroblast only will when it's in the Deflecting Swat player's advantage.

As an additional piece of secret interactive tech, maybe Null Brooch? It's tutorable at instant speed and can counter a huge number of problems, and the downside isn't nearly as bad for a deck that relies so heavily on its commander. I like to use it in Arcum personally, but Magda seems like a potential home as well.

I just thought about 2 possible includes: Goldhound and Strike it Rich. There have been so many times when I play Magda that I end the turn on 4 treasures and just need that 1 extra treasure combo off. It just feels bad, and those 2 cards are both just 1 mana treasures which is kind of sweet

You don't need an outlet for Magda, there's a million mini combos you can run that effectively wins without running any dead cards, Welder + Spine to destroy all permanent and then slap all stax pieces left in the deck into play and pass turn for example.

Twinshot can also be removal if necessary. Also, The One Ring has to be cast to give you protection, so Magda fetching it won’t give you that effect. Does that change your mind on playing it?

I was thinking that Mycosynth Lattice would be a good add, since you have Karn. That being said, you can always grab it from outside the game using Karn's -2 to grab it. My pod hates when I play Karn for that reason.

Instead of Skargan Helkite I like to use welder automaton in my magda deck, but my deck also doesn't play cards that cost more than 3 mana outside of clock of omens. I really focus on making a low cost dwarf an artifact rather than tutoring one up. That way I only need the five treasure to get clock of omens to win. It's lower than most other magda decks, but still has some stacks pieces. Usually one tangle wire is all I need to assure I win because of all the low cost dwarves I run.

I have a question. With a Magda player at the table I usually try to use a Praetor’s Grasp, if I’m in black, to exile the Clock of Omens from their deck with no intention of playing it. I would like to know… how would you recover from that combo piece being out of reach? What’s the plan b in this deck for you?
